MarketDefinition
Overview—Definitions

• Diesel Genset: A diesel genset is a packaged combination of a diesel engine, an alternator, and
various ancillary devices such as base, canopy, sound attenuation, control systems, circuit breakers,
and starting systems.

• Diesel gensets can be classified into three categories:

o Stand-by Diesel Gensets: Gensets used for supplying emergency power during normal power
outages. Typical applications are emergency power plant in hospitals, offices, factories, and so on.

o Prime Power Diesel Gensets: Prime power is the maximum power available at a variable load for
unlimited number of hours. Typical applications of these gensets can be seen in remote mining or
construction sites, and so on.

o Base Load Diesel Gensets: These gensets are used for supplying continuous power to a
constant load up to the full output rating for unlimited hours. No sustained overload capability is
available for this rating. These are generally not applicable to every genset models, and are
available with a very few suppliers.
