CONCEPT PROPOSAL (6 Pages only)

PROPOSAL TITLE: INTEGRATED MEMS/NEMS BASED MICROHEATERS FOR
THE DETECTION OF GAS FLOW & MEASUREMENT OF FLOW RATE USING
INSTRUMENT EXPERIMENTATION
4.1 OBJECTIVES (1/2 Page only)
The aim of the project is mainly for the detection of gas flow and measurement of flow
rate and its calibration using an Integrated ATMO Sens MEMS array of Micro heater
sensors which are the emerging system required for advanced technological applications
in Electronics.
The clear objectives of the present proposal are
i) To study about materials and chemical solutions for the analysis
ii) To measure the flow rate of gas and its calibration using ATMO Sens
Micro Heater Mass-Flow-Meter'
iii) To identify the gas and its changes constituent of atmosphere in real time
practical instrument based experiments and identifying amount of flow.
4.2 BACKGROUND OF THE PROGRAMME (1/2 Page only)
The calibration employed in this work is simple, cost effective and free of critical and therefore,
the technique can be extended to test different types of gases in chemical industries We have
demonstrate an ultra-low power, fast responding MEMS based Micro heater gas sensor platform.
The ultra-low power operation is a result of combining the two advantages gained through
miniaturization: (1) the drastic reduction in Micro heater surface area reduces the peak power to
approximately in mW, and (2) the short response time of tens of seconds allows the sensor to be
heated with short pulses, resulting in an average power consumption of as low as 1.5 The
instrument employed in this work is simple, cost effective and free of difficulty and therefore, the
technique can be extended to prepare many other important semiconducting metal oxide nano
particles. the gas sensing Micro heater platform presented here can be integrated with other
MEMS sensors and actuators, allowing for low-cost mass production. As a proof of concept, this
platform issued to measure flow rate of gas and its calibration and it can identify the type of gas
used in chemical industries.

4.3 RELEVANCE TO THE FIELD (INDUSTRY/ TECHNOLOGY/
AGRICULTURE/ HEALTH/ SOCIETY ETC.) (1/2 Page only)
This work is completely related to Industry and society applications. MEMS based Micro
heater flow meter which wills measures different flow rate of different gases and its calibration
and in addition it is necessary to identify the gas which is useful in chemical industries.

4.4 METHODOLOGY OF IMPLEMENTATION (1/2 Page only)

Task #1 – Measurement of flow rate of a gas and its calibration Characterization The lower power
Micro heater described here is functionalized with WO3nanoparticles via precision solution
deposition (described above) to create a hydrogen sulfide (H2S) sensor. This material system has
been previously shown to be an effective H2Ssensor using a commercially available Micro heater
with a peak power consumption of 40 mW to reach 300◦C [26]. This previous study shown that
the electrical conductance of the networks of WO3nanoparticles increased when exposed to H2S
when heated to 300◦C. Furthermore, these sensors can be heat with short volt-age pulses to
decrease the average power consumption. Here we describe a similar result achieved with much
lower power consumption with the Micro heater devices described in this work. The current
through a WO3 nano particle network deposit on the Micro heater bridge as the device is heated
to 300◦C for 1 s every 6 s. As the sensor is heated, the current increases, due to the
semiconducting nature of WO3and this “heater on” cur-rent is increases upon exposure to H2S
concentration. The peak power consumption for this device is 1.5 mW resulting in an average
power consumption of only 250 W. This is roughly 3 orders of magnitude lower than commercial
SMO sensors. Micro heaters operating in “pulsed heating” mode at 300◦C have been shown to
operate for over three months with the resistance varying by less that 5% in that time. Given the
fast thermal response of the Micro heaters describe in this work, these heat pulses can be
shortened to the millisecond. The sensor this Micro heater has a peak power consumption of
about 1.5 mW to attain a temperature of 300◦C, which is the optimal operating temperature for
this sensor. The 1-ms heat pulses are applied once a second, giving an average power
consumption of only 1.5W. This level of power consumptions is reaching the range of
electrochemical sensors with a much simpler method of fabrication and assembly, much smaller
form factor, and composed of robust, high temperature-compatible materials. While the response
of the sensor for the ultra-short heat pulses is not as fast as with longer heat pulse times (minutes,
not seconds), this mode of measurement could be used to “monitor” the environmental
conditions. The heat pulse duration can be increased. The response time decreases when the heat
pulse duration is increased within the range of ms.

Task #2: identification of the gas: once the measurement of flow rate of gas completed it is
necessary to identify the presented gas which is very useful in chemical industries. It can be
done because each gas a has a certain Specific Capacity of Heat. If one controls the flow rate &
there by the volume of gas flowing; then the gas can be identified by knowing by how much the
