Más que como causas directas del interés hacia los efectos de la den-
sidad, hay ciertos temas de estudio y preocupaciones sociales que pue-
den ser consideradas como el caldo de cultivo idóneo para la emergen-
cia de la temática del hacinamiento en Psicología y la aparición de su
tratamiento empírico tanto de campo como experimental.
Sugiero considerarlos como "condiciones de posibilidad", como "the-
mata" (en el sentido de FOUCAULT y HOLTON respectivamente) antes
que como causas. Y así, el discurso aparecido en torno a lo que ha veni-
do en llamar explosión demográfica, la inquietud ecológica a partir de
la constatación de la falta de recursos, la propagación de los estudios epi-
demiológicos en medicina, la corriente general ambientalista que ha do-
minado grandes épocas en la historia de la Psicología o ciertas teorías
como las de Lewin o Murray, habrían de ser tomadas en cuenta en este
sentido.
No obstante se considera que los estudios sociológicos sobre los efectos de
la densidad, los trabajos de espacio personal y los de territorialidad,
constituyen los antecedentes inmediatos en el estudio del hacinamiento.
Nos referiremos brevemente a los primeros y dejaremos el espacio per-
sonal y la territorialidad al margen.
Si intentamos hacer una descripción de la historiografía de los estu-
dios sobre hacinamiento, observaremos que prácticamente hasta el co-
mienzo de los años 70 son precisamente estos cuatro tipos de trabajo
los que dominan el panorama. En principio pueden distinguirse tres tiem-
pos en esta corta historia: ,

D. MODELO DE INTERFERENCIA
Hemos colocado este modelo al final del apartado con toda conciencia.
No consideramos que tenga la potencia suficiente para englobar todos
los que lo preceden, pero sí posee un carácter más global y explicativo,
porque se basa en el denominador común de todos los anteriores: la pér-
dida de control sobre el entorno.
De acuerdo con el modelo (SCHMIDT y KEATING, 1979) las condi-
ciones de alta densidad reducen la habilidad de los individuos para man-
tener el control sobre la situación, y la percepción del hacinamiento es
una evaluación en respuesta a esta ausencia o pérdida de control, pero
solamente si la densidad es un elemento destacable y una cau-
sa viable en una determinada situación de pérdida de control.
Para los autores, el control personal es un constructor compuesto de
diferentes conceptos que son particularmente pertinentes a la hora de
abordar el crowding. Acuden a las distinciones que AVERILL (1973) ha-
ce de sus diferentes componentes:
caso, que no es sólo el nivel de densidad el que puede generar una sen-
sación de hacinamiento. Estas nociones de infra y sobresaturación ayu-
dan a diluir esta ilusión.
SIDAD.
Dado que los datos experimentales indican en ocasiones que el haci-
namiento puede afectar a la conducta interpersonal, pero que estos
efectos son muy complejos y que dependen entre otros factores de la situación,
FREEDMAN formula la hipótesis de que la densidad sirve para intensifi-
car los recursos típicos del individuo a una situación determinada.
Hay que distinguir esta idea de las dos asunciones comunes de que
la alta densidad produce estrés o tensión. La producción de estrés no
dispone de evidencia experimental, sin embargo sí se puede afirmar que
produce tensión, pero esta tensión puede ser debida a la situación expe-
rimental misma, la explicación de las diferencias sexuales, por ejemplo,
es de las más problemáticas, pero sin embargo pueden quedar enmarca-
das en el modelo de la densidad/intensidad en el sentido de que deter-
minan conductas típicas de los hombres y/o de las mujeres intensificadas.
El modelo ha recibido confirmación de experimentos realizados an-
teriormente (como los de LOO, 1972, y los de GRIFFIT y VEITCH, 1971)
y hay otros diseñados específicamente para contrastarlo, (FREEDMAN,
1975).
Como resumen, FREEDMAN afirma que:
aunque cuesta mucho trabajo creer que sea más explicativo por inspirar-
se en la física y por tener fórmulas matemáticas, que los modelos que
otros autores han propuesto.
Sus características más importantes son la inclusión del tiempo como
factor importante en la sensación de hacinamiento, y el entender ésta
como un fenómeno de influencia social. Para KNOWLES el hacinamiento
es el resultado de la influencia ejercida sobre un individuo por el número
y la "potencia" de otros individuos en situación de alta densidad a lo lar-
go del tiempo.
