Tibbetts, the newly
hired chair of Radford’s
Criminal Justice Department,
died unexpectedly Tuesday,
Sept. 10.
Tibbetts had been a professor
at California State University
at San Bernadino for 19 years
and had just been hired for the
position at Radford.
The healthy 49-year-old
began bleeding in his upper
GI-tract and died instantly,
according to Tibbetts’s wife who
spoke with The Tartan.
“He was meeting with
classes; he was fulfilling his
duties in the department. It
was a bit of a shock to everyone
involved when he passed,”
said Dr. Matt Smith, Dean of
the College of Humanities and
Behavioral Sciences.
Smith said the college was
very hopeful about what he
would bring to the department
and that he was “full of
promise.” He described Tibbetts
as a remarkably student-focused
professor, which was the main
reason the school hired him.
In addition to his duties
as department chair, Tibbetts
was teaching a freshman-level
criminal justice course.

Eduardo Lobo-Perez was
found unresponsive in
New River Valley Regional Jail
Thursday morning.
He was arrested the night
before, just before midnight,
for public intoxication or
public swearing by the
Radford University Police
Department, according to the
jail superintendent, Gregory
Winston.
Jail personnel found him
unresponsive in his cell around
7:50 a.m. Medical staff at the
jail called EMS responders who
attempted to resuscitate Lobo-
Perez but were unable. He was
pronounced dead and taken to
the coroner for an autopsy.  Judith Kimble gave $100

Charleston in 1998, he moved
to Atlanta, Georgia and acquired
his Ph.D. in Neuroscience &

decide to become a Biology
professor at Radford University?
Dr. Jason Davis: That’s a
good question. To understand
why I came here I guess we have
to start from the beginning of
where I came from.
I’m from South Carolina and I
went to undergraduate school at
the College of Charleston, which

really enjoyed my time there
and thought the relationships
I gained with faculty and the
opportunities that I received
to do research were primarily
stepping stones in helping me
elevate as a scientist.
When I was applying to teach
at universities, I knew I wanted
to be at a place that provided
an emphasis on teaching and
research, particularly research
that involved undergraduate
students. Radford’s science
facilities had the necessary
resources to help me conduct
my research, and its classrooms
were small enough for me to
focus on teaching undergraduate
students and engage in
meaningful discussions.
TT: How did you become
interested in Biology? Was it
prevalent throughout your
childhood?
Dr. Davis: My mom was a

spent a lot of time with my dad
going out into the wilderness
and camping, hiking, hunting
and fishing.
My love for nature was
always ingrained in me, but
throughout my childhood, I was
asking questions like “How does
this work?” or “What makes this

nationwide Outdoor Campus
Challenge along with 98 other
rival schools in the country.
The challenge begins
Monday, Sept. 16 and continues

oining other hit movies
such as Heaven is
for Real, God’s Not
Dead, and Breakthrough,
Overcomer is a faith-based
movie that shows how God can
move mountains in your life.
Unlike other Christian
movies, Overcomer focuses on
telling a story of how people
can lose their faith through
everyday challenges that many
people will face in their lives;
like losing a job, struggling
with drugs, and even health
problems.
Most other Christian
movies involve a real-life story
where someone gets sick and is
expected to die, and by God’s
hand, they are healed; some
may consider it a miracle.
However, Overcomer does not,
and because of this, it seems to
lack the emotion that you may
get from watching one of the
real-life stories.
Overcomer stars Shari
Rigby, Alex Kendrick, Aryn
Wright-Thompson and
Cameron Arnett whom
all follow their own path
throughout the movie. These
different stories eventually
intertwine. At first, it can be a
little confusing, but by the end,
it all makes sense.  the screen at the end.

is pretty slow and takes a while
to climax.

Be a Coffee Drinker, Know Your Coffee

A
s a college student,
chances are you have
some kind of caffeine
intake that gets you through the
study sessions, early morning
lectures (looking at you 8 a.m.
classes), and all-nighters.
If you choose to get
your caffeine from coffee,
congratulations, you’ve made a
great choice.
However, just because you
drink coffee out of necessity,
it doesn’t mean you’re a full-
fledged coffee drinker. It’s
something you have to earn; you
have to know your coffee.
Let me explain: If you said
you were a food connoisseur,
but your knowledge of food
only consisted of opinions, you
wouldn’t be a connoisseur, and
coffee is no different.
If you want to be able to
call yourself a coffee drinker
confidently, and without fearing
any follow-up questions, you
need to know the lingo of the
coffee world.
Here are the most basic
coffee terms you should know.
Roasts
There are three main
“roasts,” which refer to how long
the coffee bean is roasted before
grinding. The three main roasts
are: Light, Medium and Dark.

“Light” roasts retain the
most caffeine, but it is a much
more mild coffee. If you like a
subtle cup that allows for cream
and sugar to take the spotlight, a
light roast is for you.
“Medium” roast is the most
preferred cup in America, and
has a robust flavor but still goes
down smoothly. If you enjoy the
taste of coffee but don’t want an
intense experience, you can’t go
wrong with a medium.
“Dark” roasted coffee beans
retain the least amount of
caffeine and have an intensely
bitter and bold flavor. Those
who drink their coffee black (or
plain) prefer a dark roast coffee.
Blends, Varieties and Add-ons
Another aspect of coffee is
“blends,” which refer to the ratio
of different coffees from many
places in the world in a single
cup. This results in a distinct
flavor.
The most basic blend can be
just two different types of coffee,
while the more complex blends
can have as many as eight.

either; coffee is drunk on many
occasions.
In Italy, coffee is mixed with
ice cream as a dessert.
In Ireland, it’s mixed with
alcohol to celebrate holidays.
While traditionally hot, cold
brew coffees are becoming more
and more popular; coffee is a
versatile beverage.
Being a coffee drinker
involves knowing not just that
you like coffee, but knowing
what you like about coffee. That
means you need to try different
types. There are hundreds of
different combinations of beans,
roast, blends and preparation
methods that result in wildly
different flavors.
So you like coffee. That’s
great. However, there’s a whole
world of coffee to enjoy. It’s a
culture that spans continents
and touches millions of lives, so
why limit it in yours?

I just knew that I liked
learning about nature and
figuring out how living things
worked and where they came
from. So when I went to
undergrad, I instantly knew that
I wanted to major in biology
because it seemed really cool
and I was curious in seeing
where it would lead me.
After getting involved
in biology throughout
undergraduate and graduate
school, I fell in love with it and
decided to see how far it would
lead me professionally. After
graduate school, I started my
career as a biology professor and
continued to research animal
behavior.
TT: After going to the

College of Charleston, you also
went to Emory University where
you received your Ph.D., why did
you decide to enroll at Emory
University?
Dr. Davis: When I did my
research at the College of
Charleston, most of my work
was on bioacoustics and animal
behavior, which is basically
animal communication and
animal sound.
When I went to graduate
school, I knew I wanted to build
on this research, and there was
a professor at Emory University
named Harold Gouzoules, who

and animal communication and
basically trying to figure out
how monkeys talk to each other.

monkeys are extremely hard
to study and listening to
monkeys scream all day wasn’t
fun. That experience made me
realize that animal research is
cool and made me interested
in the mechanisms that
caused the behavior of living
organisms. These mechanisms
can range anywhere from
neurotransmitters, hormones,
or even brain structures.
Overall, Emory allowed me
to combine the behavioral work
that I had done in undergrad
with the study of neuroscience
and physiological systems.

enjoy helping students discover
new things. As teachers, we’re
basically geeks in some form
or another. If you’ve ever had a
friend who’s really interested in
Star Wars, Harry Potter or even
Pokemon, they probably want to
tell you everything about it all
the time.
That’s what we are as
teachers. We love the subjects
that we teach because learning
about them had a significant
impact on our lives. We love
teaching students and enjoy
seeing the look on student’s
faces when their entire world
view has changed within a
lecture or presentation.
The small classroom size
also makes a difference, because
it’s easier to connect with a
classroom filled with 25 students

than a classroom of about 45
students. A smaller class gives
you the opportunity to meet
new students and in some ways,
become their mentor.
TT: How do you think
Radford University can help
students revolutionize the
future of science?
Dr. Davis: Wow! That’s
a hard question. Radford
has done a phenomenal job
providing research grants,
science facilities, and travel
opportunities to both its
students and faculty. As long
as we continue to stay focus on
the importance of science and
its impacts on our students, the
possibilities are limitless.

he Radford Women’s
Volleyball team played
in Hilton Philadelphia
at Penn’s Landing Cherry and
White Challenge Friday, Sept.
13.

tournament of the season, the
women’s volleyball team lost
the first match-up against the
Owls 0-3. However, all three sets
were heavily contested as they
did not let the opposition jump

The Highlanders trailed early
during the first set, but following
