Homework 1: Developing a Health Teaching Program

1. What insights and reflections do you have based on your understanding of the Essential
Intrapartal and Newborn Care? Do you think this would address the issues of Sustainable
Development Goal 3 particularly on maternal and child health? You may include
examples and scenarios.
The essential intrapartal and newborn care practice in nursing always changes. It is constantly
changing with the goal of improving the existing practices in taking care of a mother and her
newborn child, to prevent them from acquiring complications during the critical stage they are in.
To implement changes or new practices in intrapartal and newborn care, a research must be done
to ensure that the changes are truly beneficial and essential. The research will serve as evidence
and will also help provide a rationale behind the procedures or treatments proposed. A change
may include a removal of an existing practice or an addition. Most of the times, when a practice
is removed, it is because it was proven to be unnecessary if not because it is a contributing factor
to mortality of mothers and newborn children. For example, nowadays, student nurses learn that
mothers who are about to give birth may already be allowed to eat soft food and drink water as
opposed to the previous practice where they cannot eat or drink during labour. Before, it was
thought that eating and drinking while in labour may cause aspiration during birth which
obligated women in labour to fast. However, it was discovered that there is only an insignificant
number of women who died of aspiration during labour, and that it actually is beneficial for low-
risk or healthy women to eat and drink, as doing so may provide them additional energy when
giving birth (American Society of Anesthesiologists, 2015).

The sustainable goal 3 is about ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all
ages. The EINC includes care for mother during labour, after labour, and care for newborn
babies before and after delivery. Each step considers the health of the mother and child without
sacrificing their comfort. With these, nurses must continue to learn and keep up with new
studies, and nurse instructors must also be updated and be prepared to teach their students a
different practice or thing from what they have learned with their time as students to be able to
provide optimal care. If nurses and students practice EINC, complications may be prevented or
detected at an early stage. Prevention and detection may save lives, thus reducing mortality from
delivery and post-delivery for both mothers and children. The objective of EINC corresponds to
that of the third sustainable goal. Although EINC only targets mothers who are in labour, newly
delivered, and new born children, it at least promotes and ensures their health and well-being.
