National English Festival 2019

“Empowering Millennials to Compete in 4.0 Era”

English Student Association (ESA) is an English student organization Faculty of Teacher

Taining and Education which focuses on fostering our members’ English proficiency gradually.
There have been myriad English programs done successfully during this half presidency such as
National English Seminar, English Learners’ Club, and English Debating Forum. We are
certainly aware that fostering the English proficiency is also necessary for other people.
Therefore, the only appropriate way to do so is by conducting several beneficial events.

National English Festival (NEF) has always been one of the events ESA FKIP UNISMA
proudly presents. NEF is the compilation between linguistics field and English as communication
media. The purpose of this event is to facilitate participants in fostering their skills and talents
through a competitive yet sportive atmosphere of English competitions. To achieve the purpose,
we present you National English Festival 2019 with the theme “Empowering Millennials to
Compete in 4.0 Era”. This theme is chosen because NEF is one of the events where the
participants can improve their abilities, not only in terms of English linguistic but also in being
brave, competitive, open-minded, and to put forward ideas to the general public in this millennial
era. This output will be utilized as a power for the youths to compete supportively in this global
and critical world.

Our NEF 2019 has five competitions such as Debate, News Anchor, Speech, English
Olympiad and Story Telling. The objective of holding this event is to enable the participants
improve their abilities in English through a competitive, critical and supportive competition.

Thus, we humbly invite you to participate in this nation-wide, prestigious, and

challenging event. Enclosed with this invitation are registration forms and further explanations.
We hope you can be a part of NEF 2019 so that together we can help developing the practical use
of English in daily life.

THE COMPETITIONS

1. DEBATE
Debate is a competition where two teams put forward their arguments on the provided
motion. The system used in this competition is the Asian Parliamentary System. Each
team consists of three speakers. This competition consist of Preliminary Round that
will be held on 25th October 2019, Semi Final and Final Round will be held on
26thOctober 2019.

2. NEWS ANCHOR
News Anchor is a competition where the participants deliver news in English just like
professional news anchors on television. The news will be provided by the committee.
Participants are required to pay attention to attitude, manner, content, and news
reading organization. The Preliminary Round will be held on October 24th 2019.
While, the Semi Final Round and Grand Final Round will be conducted on
October 25th 2019.

3. SPEECH
Speech is a competition where participants deliver speech from the essay that they
have made based on the theme determined by the committee. The time given to each
participant to deliver his/her speech is at least 5 minutes and maximum 7 minutes. The
aspects which will be assessed in this competition are the content of the speech,
structure and grammar, pronunciation, expression, their way of presenting the speech,
mastery of the speech, and timeliness. The Elimination Round and the Semi Final
Round will be held on October 25th 2019. While, the Grand Final Round will be
conducted on October 26th 2019.

4. ENGLISH OLYMPIAD
English Olympiad is a competition where participants are asked to do a multiple-
choice test. This English Olympiad will be held in each branch city for the elimination
round, and the semifinal and the final round will be held in UNISMA. The location of
every branches will be announced soon.The Elimination Round will be held on
October20th 2019 in each branch city while the Semi Final and Final Round will
be conducted on October 25th 2019 in UNISMA (University of Islam Malang).

5. STORYTELLING
Storytelling is the interactive art of using words and actions to reveal the elements and
images of a story while encouraging the listener’s imagination. It uses actions such as
vocalization, physical movement and/or gesture. These actions are the parts of spoken
or manual language other than words. Their use distinguishes storytelling from
writing and text-based computer interactions. Not all nonverbal language behaviours
need to be present in storytelling. Some storytellers use body movement extensively;
whereas, others use little or none.The Elimination Round will be held on October
24th–25th 2019 and theFinal Round will be conducted on October 26th 2019.

1. Debate Competition
 Regulation:
 The participants of the Debate Competition are active students of Senior High
School either state or private.
 The competition applies Asian Parliamentary System (APS) which consists of 3
debaters.
 Participants cannot be replaced by others.
 The participants are limited for 20 teams only.
 The participants have tofill these requirements:
