GENRE

According to Peter Knapp, Genre is a type of text which has process such as describing
with different structural and grammatical resources and engage in different genres. Generic
features structure and grammar of the genre describing, for example, remain consistent for all
writers from the experiential descriptions of early writers. Genre is working as social process
because it has a classification and structural analysis of text types which has purpose with different
generic structure characteristics and linguistic features in every text type. Text type which has
generic structure and linguistic features have so many kinds of text and this is some of the text
such as recount, persuasive, and procedure.

Recount has a communicative purpose to retell events for the purpose of informing or
entertaining. This text has a purpose, generic structure, and language features. The purpose of a
recount is to list and describe past experiences by retelling events in the order in which they
happened. Recounts are written to retell events with the purpose of either informing or entertaining
their audience (or both). In a simple word the purpose of recount text is to retell past experience.
Recount has generic structure and language features.

The generic structure of recount text are orientation, events, reorientations.

 Orientation : tells who has involved, what happened, where the events
took place, and when it happened
 Events : tell what happened in chronological sequence.
 Reorientations : consists of optional-closure of events/ending.

Language feature of recount text :

 Using the simple past tense, past continuous tense, past perfect tense, and past
perfect continuous tense.
 Using temporal sequence, e.g. On Saturday. On Monday, On Sunday
 Focus on specific participant, e.g. I (the writer)
 Using the conjunctions, such as: then, before, after, etc.
 Using action verb, e.g. went, stayed
Persuasive text is aims to persuade the reader to want to do something in accordance with
the wishes of the author. In order for the goal to be achieved, the author should be able to put
forward evidence with data and facts. This text also has purpose, generic structure, and
characteristic. The purpose of persuasive text to argue a case from a particular point of view and
o attempt to convince the reader/listener.

Generic Stucture of persuasive text are introduction/opening statement, body/argument,


and conclusion.

 Introduction : get the readers attention by using a "hook.", give some background
information if necessary, and thesis or focus statement.
 Body : The writer then provides evidence to support the opinion offered
in the thesis statement in the introduction. The body should consist of at least three
paragraphs. Each paragraph is based on a solid reason to back your thesis statement.
Since almost all issues have sound arguments on both sides of the question, a good
persuasive writer tries to anticipate opposing viewpoints and provide counter-
arguments along with the main points in the essay. One of the three paragraphs
should be used to discuss opposing viewpoints and your counter-argument.
 Conclusion : A piece of persuasive writing usually ends by summarizing the
most important details of the argument and stating once again what the reader is to
believe or do.

Characteristic of persuasive text as for some features of persuasive paragraphs:

 Expressing thoughts, ideas, or opinions.


 Aimed at influencing the attitude and opinion of the reader so that they want to do,
act or do something voluntarily, according to the desired author.
 Proving truth, the author's opinion so as to create confidence and trust in the reader.
 Using several techniques such as rationalism, identification, autosuggestion,
projections and replacement.
 Written in simple present tense
 A movement usually from the generic to the specific.
Procedure text is texts that explain how something works or how to use instruction /
operation manuals e.g. how to use the video, the computer, the tape recorder, the photocopier, the
fax or texts that instruct how to do a particular activity e.g. recipes, rules for games, science
experiments, road safety rules. This texts deal with human behavior, e.g how to live happily, how
to succeed. This text has a purpose, generic structure, and language feature. The purpose of this
text are to explain/tell (the reader) how to make/operate/do something through a sequence of
actions or steps and to explain steps/instruction to make/operate/do something.
Generic structure of this text are goal, material or ingredient, and step.
 Goal : (e.g : How to make spaghetti)
 Material or Ingredient : (e.g : the material to cook omelette are egg, onion, vegetable
oil, etc. )
 Step : (e.g : first, wash the tomatoes, onion, …., second cut the
onions becomes slice. . . )
Language feature of procedure text :
 Use adverbial of sequence / Using temporal conjunction (e.g: first, second, third,
the last)
 Use command / imperative sentence (e.g : put the noodles on the . . ., cut the onion.
. ., wash the tomatoes. . . )
 Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurate, for
example, for five minutes, 2 hours, etc.
 Using action verbs, e.g : make, take, boil, cookUsing action verbs, e.g : make, take,

 Using Simple Present Tense
Descriptive text is a text that explains about whether a person or an object is like, whether
its form, its properties, its amount and others. This text has a purpose, generic structure, and
language feature. The purpose of description text are to describe person, thing or place in specific
and o describe a particular person, thing or place.

Generic structure of this text are identification and description.

 Identification : contains about the introduction of a person, place, animal or object


will be described.
 Description : contains a description of something such as animal, things, place
or person by decribing its features, forms, colors, or anything related to what the
writer describe.

Language feature of this text :

 Specific participant : has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one). for
example: Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle Jim
 The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, for example: a beautiful
beach, a handsome man, the famous place in jepara, etc.
 The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present
because it tells the fact of the object described.
 Action verb: verbs that show an activity (for example, run, sleep, walk, cut.
