5E Lesson Plan Ideas

Subject area/course/grade level:

Math/ Pre-AP Algebra 2 with Trig/ 10th & 11th

Standards (State and ISTE Standards for Students):

F.BF.3 Identify the effect on the graph of replacing f(x) by f(x)+k, kf(x), f(kx), and f(x+k) for specific
values of k (both positive and negative); find the value of k given the graphs. Experiment with cases
and illustrate an explanation of the effects on the graph using technology.

Objectives:

The object of the lesson is to transform the quadratic function by experimenting with
transformation rules.

Differentiation Strategies:
How will the lesson address the various learning styles of the students and the needs of those with
special needs?

The lesson will be differentiated by having students observe natural events that can be modeled by
using parabolas. Also, questions will be formatted to see if the lesson learned today can be related
to a future lesson.

ENGAGEMENT:
In preparation for this lesson, I will post the following youtube video to Google classroom:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99v51U3HSCU . The video is a review of what the parent graph
of a quadratics looks like and all of the characteristics of the parent graph. A pre-made Voki will be
used to to begin the lesson. The Voki will reiterate the transformation rules and how to move a graph
by adding and multiplying numbers to a quadratic equation. The dog will review the transformation
rules with the class. https://www.voki.com/site/index
EXPLORATION:
The exploration part will be conducted using Desmos. Desmos.com is a graphing tool used to explore
different functions. Students will sign into my teacher account using the code XKUGBF. They will
complete the activity Marbleslides: Parabolas located at the following link
https://teacher.desmos.com/activitybuilder/custom/566b31784e38e1e21a10aade . The activity
explores how changing values of an equations changes the shape of a quadratics.

After the demos activity, a previously made multiple choice questionnaire will be given to each
student. Each student will have a graphing calculator. Using previously learned graphing calculator
skills they will have to match the equation with the correct multiple-choice answer. A sample of the
problem set is given below. Each student should be able to type equations into a graphing calculator
and match it to the correct choice.

At this point, I will assess what the class has learned so far by using a Kahoot quiz. Kahoot allows the
students to take part in a live quiz using their cellular device. The link of the quiz I used is listed below.

EXPLANATION:
Below is a link to a Prezi I have created for the lesson. The Prezi presents information that will explain
the transformations thoroughly. The presentation also provides examples of each transformation.
The summary of the lesson leaves the students with two questions that will take them to a higher
level of thinking.

After the presentation the students will be asked to complete a Delta Math assignment. They have
previously used this website deltamth.com to complete other assignments. They have an account
created where they have used my teacher code, 510210, to be a part of my classroom. They will be
required to correctly graph ten quadratics by using the transformation rules. Delta Math will show
the students how to correctly work the problems they missed. They are not finished with the
assignment until they have correctly answered ten questions. Delta Math generates new problems
for every student until they have reached their goal of ten correct answers. To see the assignment
you can create an account and use the teacher code and enter yourself as a sixth period student.
Also, a screenshot is given below.

ELABORATION:
Individual project: Each student should create a blabberize animation to explain what they
have learned so far about transformations of quadratics. Each student will pick a picture to
be animated. You can use a saved picture on your computer. Go to blabberize.com and
create an animation. You will need to download your picture, and record your voice to the
picture. Your recording should last at least one minute. Each student should explain what
they know about each transformation (shift. dilation, and reflection). Vocabulary from the
unit can also be explained. Listed below is an example of a blabber.

EVALUATION:
The following rubric was created for the individual blabber project. The rubric grades the
quix mainly on the content being discussed. The rubric also grades the project on length and
the miage being used.
