Introduction

A dormitory also called a residence hall or simply a “dorm” is a large building

divided up into many rooms where students live, often with a roommate or two. Dorm

rooms are usually small, with just enough room for a couple of beds, a couple of desks

and maybe a few small pieces of furniture. (As cited in

https://wonderopolis.org/wonder/what-is-a-dormitory) In some dormitories, it could be a

different type where a room has its own comfort room. Moreover, a dormitory is also not

limited to students nowadays. Most of the landlords prefer to accept tenants who are

teachers, or workers in other industries.

In this modern age, many people tend to choose dormitory over houses or

apartments since rental or home mortgage are quite expensive compared to a dormitory

rental fee.

As observed in Don Honorio Ventura State University, many students and

teachers are living in a dormitory. The proponents figured out that by looking for a

dormitory to move into takes quite time to occupy one. Moreover, as perceived by the

proponents, some landlords are still using the old-fashioned way of keeping reservation

records and some landlords do not keep.

Now, RoomHub is a mobile application that is similar to hotel reservation

systems online like Traveloka or TripAdvisor where you can search for a hotel, find its

inclusions and amenities, book for a reservation followed by check in and out. Therefore,

this application will allow tenants and landlords to meet online. It will focus on providing

a direct access to Google maps that has a landing page around DHVSU, showing all
available registered dormitories around to ease finding a dormitory to move into and a

picture of what it looks like. Moreover, this will benefit every registered landlord by

uploading their dormitory buildings information they can get a lot of tenants looking

around.

RoomHub will also help landlords in terms of checking the inquirer’s information

like name, about (short introduction), contact number, and inquirer’s picture. And

landlords may also manage their dormitory or room information by using the application.

In addition to this, both inquirer and tenants will have a hassle-free communication.

Objective of the Study

The goal of this proposed study is to provide an application that allows landlords

to register their dormitory business online then inquirers can locate their buildings easily

by just tapping a few in the application. Moreover, one of the goals is to create a

reservation system between landlord and inquirer.

Specific Objectives

 To create an Android application that allows both landlords and inquirers to meet

online

 To develop a room reservation system

 To help students or teachers of DHVSU to find dormitories around the campus

online at ease

 To provide a database for inquirer’s reservation records and allow landlords to

review their reservations list.

 To show to inquirers how far is the Don Honorio Ventura State University from

their desired dormitory by using Google map.

Features

The application includes registration of landlord and inquirer’s accounts,

profiling, reservation, mapping, dormitory, and room management module. Whereas

profiling allows each user to view the landlord and inquirer’s information like picture,

name, contact, and a short introduction. Moreover, dormitory and room management

allows landlords to add, update, or remove a certain record.

Scope

The coverage of this proposed study is to design and develop a mobile application

using Android platform that will allow inquirers to easily locate and reserve a room

directly to a certain landlord. This project will also use Google map to determine a certain

dormitory distance from Don Honorio Ventura State University. In addition to these, the

proposed application also covers the web-based application concept. By saving a record

online it will be accessible anywhere with the use of internet.

Significance of the Study

This proposed study will be significant mainly to landlords and inquirers since

this application will minimize the effort of finding a dormitory and communication

between landlord and inquirer.

The study is significant to the inquirers in terms of helping them make decisions.

The inquirers can check a dormitory’s information, its picture, and how far it is from
DHVSU. Moreover, the study is also significant to landlords. They will be able to put

their dormitory business online and will serve as an additional marketing strategy for

them to attract new inquirers.

And lastly, this study will be significant to future researchers who will be taking

up the same or related study in the field of Information and Technology. This will serve

as a concrete basis for literature of their study related to information management,

reservation, and mapping system.

Definition of Terms

This will allow readers to understand the meaning of a specific term.

Dormitory - a large room containing many beds, for example in a boarding school.

Landlord - a person, especially a man, who rents land, a building, or an apartment to a

tenant.

Inquirer - is a person who asks for information about something or someone.

Tenant - a person who occupies land or property rented from a landlord.

Android Platform – a Google Inc.'s open and free software stack that includes an

operating system, middleware and also key applications for use on mobile devices.

Google Map - a web mapping service developed by Google. It offers satellite imagery,

aerial photography, street maps, 360° panoramic views of streets, and real-time traffic

conditions.

Traveloka - an Indonesian unicorn company that provides airline ticketing and hotel

booking services online.

TripAdvisor - an American travel and restaurant website company that shows hotel and

restaurant reviews, accommodation bookings and other travel-related content.

Conceptual Framework

Figure 1.0 Paradigm of the Proposed Study

The paradigm of the proposed study is shown in this phase. This IPO (Input,

Process, and Output) diagram or conceptual framework refers to the project

development.

Input phase represents the incoming data or information to provide a sufficient

basis for the proponents of this proposed study to develop the project. Moreover, process

phase shows systematic process of designing the system specifically designing,

prototyping, customer evaluation, review and update, development, test and maintain. In

the last phase of this paradigm, the output will be the product of this proposed project.
Methods

This phase of the proposed study discusses the research design, participants of the

study, research instrument, and data processing. By this method phase, it will help the

proponents to identify what needs to be analyzed to make the output project suitable and

overcome the problems.

Descriptive Research

The proponents will be using descriptive as research design to gather data from

respondents. The researchers will use this method to get the information from the

experiences of the landlords, and inquirers namely students and or teachers to describe

the problems to be approved. The information and data collected through survey

questionnaires will serve as a significant basis for analysis.

Research Instruments

In this distinct period, the proponents used survey questionnaires and observation

as instruments to gather data that will fulfill the desired outcome of this proposed project.

Survey Questionnaire

The proponents used questionnaires to gather all needed data for the development

of the proposed project. The constructed questions were based on the proponents’ ideas

and insights that were relevant on this proposed study to ensure the authenticity and

validity of the variables in the questionnaire. Lastly, the proponents also seek

consultation to their capstone adviser to confirm the variables and contents of the

questionnaire.
Observation

This is a type of research instrument whereas the proponents’ observes the

environmental aspects and deficiency of the situation followed by the registration of the

gathered data. On top of that, the gathered data will be examined in detail for better

explanation and interpretation of the situations inadequacy. In addition, the proponents

will design and develop a project that will succeed in dealing with the current dilemmas

found on the observed situation or site.

Sampling Technique

The proponents agreed to use simple random sampling technique. The

respondents for this proposed study are 25 students, 25 teachers, and 10 landlords, 60 in

total that are divided into five (5) barangays around Don Honorio Ventura State

University. Moreover, same number of respondents will be applied for the evaluation of

the current or existing system. Therefore, a total of 120 respondents will participate in

this proposed study.

Respondents of the Study

The proponents chose the appropriate respondents of this proposed study

specifically the students and teachers of DHVSU, and landlords that owns dormitory

properties around the campus.

Method Used in Developing the System

Requirements

The proponents will collect data that will support the project to have a concrete

basis for a better designing. Moreover, the proponents will also gather data but not

limited through on-site observation and survey, but also to online articles, forums, and e-

books. By that it will render a reliable and suitable project.

Designing

Designing a creative output that will satisfy the end-users’ needs. Also that will

work to overcome the problems of the current situation. By the help of data gathering, the

proponents found out that web-based mobile application is one of the possible tools to

make this project possible.

Prototyping

After the designing phase, this is where creative output will be in place all

together in one. An application prototype where in all modules are placed together with a

sample data like landlord, inquirer, dormitory, room, and reservation information.

Evaluation

Consulting the end-users specifically the landlords, students, teachers and the

proponents’ respective capstone project panelists in regards of the rendered output of this

project to acquire their feedbacks and suggestions. This phase will serve as the reference

for the iteration.

Iteration

If the end-users and panelists are not satisfied by the current output, proponents

will recap on the current project and update by adding the end-user’s newly suggestions

for the betterment of the project.

Development

If the end-users are already satisfied with the project, therefore, proponents will

develop the prototype and implement the project.

Test

After the development, a pilot testing will be conducted and this will be done by

the proponents of this project.

Maintain

Maintaining the existing project to function well and constantly do tasks as it is

programmed. After a successful implementation and pilot testing, the proponents will
frequently monitor and consult the end-users regarding with performance and results of

the RoomHub application.

System Architecture

Figure 3.0 System Architecture

System architecture is the conceptual model that defines the structure, behavior,

and more views of a system. An architecture description is a formal description and

representation of a system, organized in a way that supports reasoning about the

structures and behaviors of the system.

A system architecture can consist of system components and the sub-systems

developed, that will work together to implement the overall system. There have been

efforts to formalize languages to describe system architecture collectively these are called

architecture description languages. (As cited in

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systems_architecture)
The system architecture of this proposed project is to show how end-users meet

from different devices. Each end-user will be sending data to a server that will be stored

into the database to suffice self’s or other’s information needed.
