Face Detection and Fingerprint Door Unlock

Introduction

The advances of computing technology have facilitated the development of real-time vision
modules that interact with humans in recent years. Examples abound, particularly in
biometrics and human computer interaction as the information contained in faces needs to be
analyzed for systems to react accordingly. For biometric systems that use faces as non-
intrusive input Modules.

Face Detection-

 The face detection problem is challenging as it needs to account for all possible
appearance variation caused by change in illumination, facial features, occlusions, etc.
In addition, it has to detect faces that appear at different scale, pose, within plan
rotations. In spite of all these difficulties, tremendous progress has been made in the
last decade and many systems have shown impressive real-time performance. The
recent advances of these algorithms have also made significant contributions in
detecting other objects such as humans/pedestrians, and cars.
 The working of the project is when a person presses his fingers on the fingerprint
sensor, the face of the person is detected according to the fingerprint. If by any means
the face of the person is not clearly visible like a person covers his/her face, then the
door will remain closed.

Fingerprint Sensing-
 Fingerprint sensing is a widely used means especially for security purposes. The
specialty of fingerprints is that, it is unique and no two human beings will have the
same fingerprints.
The fingerprint can be forged easily but along with fingerprint sensing we also use face
detection which increases the precision of authentication which again serves as a way of
increasing the security level and also reduces the chance of getting forged.

Literature Review -

 Wei-Lun Chao et al said that Face recognition has been one of the most interesting
and important research fields in the past two decades. The reasons come from the
need of automatic recognition and surveillance system, the interest in human visual
system on face recognition, and the design of human computer interface, etc. Report
only focuses on –image based face recognition, rather than video based and thermal
image based methods.[2]
 M Vineeta Sai et al said that Face recognition is a personal identification system that
uses personal characteristics of a person to identify the person’s identity. Human face
recognition procedure basically consists of two phases namely Face Detection and
Recognition. The fully automated face detection and recognition system was not
robust enough to achieve a high recognition accuracy.[5]
 Josef Bigun et al said that the fingerprint recognition is presented including current
issues and challenges. It is not the scope of this work to work towards a perfect
verification rate but to give an incentive to combine different methods within the same
modality and reveal the fundamental reasons for such improvements.[3]

Problem Formulation-
 The face Recognition alone cannot be used for security purpose as for face recognition
a very large database is required, but not accurate for indentation especially in large
population.
 Fingerprint sensing can be easily forged which reduces the security level and also
reduces the authentication verification.

Proposed Methodology
Individually using fingerprint sensing or face detection as a way of security increases the risk
of forging as silicon gel or video tapes which can hack the security. Simultaneously using both
the techniques we can increase the security and prevent the above problem faced.

Design Module
In this project we are going to achieve the goal of securing doors, gate and lockers with the
help of face detection and finger print sensors.

Firstly we have to connect the web cam and the finger print sensor to the computer using the
USB cable to the COM port.
In this project, we will achieve to connect the web cam to the web cam through computer to
the Ardiuno board and with help of analog serial communication feature of ardiuno board.

Then by saving finger print in Ardiuno using finger print sensor

For the take the input from web to the computer we have to build an app in python language
using IDE called “PyCharm”

Result-
The main aim of the project is accomplished as the door lock system works on both the
factors i.e. Fingerprint sensing and face detection. If any one of the above parameter is not
fulfilled, then the door will not open and hence the security level is increased.

Future Scope and Applications-

 If only fingerprint sensing is used, it can be used in the locks of the vehicles and auto-
mobiles.
 Along with face detection, using face recognition can be used in the Bank Lockers,
Attendance systems, Phone UPI.

Conclusion –
In this project we have studied and achieve the purpose of unlocking with the help of face
detection and fingerprint sensor. But this project ha have major applications if add to face
recognition
