Assignment #3

Project Title: Soap Carving Pictograph

Art Form: Egyptian hieroglyphic carving (bas relief), Roman relief carving (high relief)

Vocabulary: pictograph, relief, bas relief, high relief

Elements of Art: shape, form, space (positive/negative)

Principles of Design: balance, movement

Criteria:
 Carving illustrates a word
 Student has created a low or high relief sculpture

Directions:
1. Find a word on the dictionary page that speaks to you.
2. In your sketchbook, trace a bar of soap for the dimensions. Draw wither three versions
of illustrations for your word, or try illustrations for three different words. Include
words and definitions in your sketchbook.
3. Choose one and redraw on an index card.
4. Scrape Ivory logo off soap to start.
5. Transfer drawing using one of the methods shown in the video.
6. Begin carving—go slow so you don’t remove material by mistake. Think about what are
the highest points in your carving and carve away from there.
