1.Experiences with online learning.

My learning experience, at first I can say it was difficult and confusing for me because it was

for the first time seeing something of this sort when it comes to learning. I had no

understanding of what was happening and how this module would operate during the

course of the semester. I had so many doubts, I thought I would never cope with something

of a sort. As it is my first year in varsity and being new to online learning, I had no clue about

online learning. But as time went by, I figured it was very much easy and not so difficult like I

thought it was in the beginning of the semester, that’s what got me exited. I managed to

adjust to it and how it works. As an online module, it is easy to use because the instructions

are now clear to me and everything is done electronically. Fun is another way I can use to

express my experience about this module because I enjoyed it to the end. It is exiting when

exploring new things which I understand perfectly clear and that are of great importance to

me and my future.

My role model is a woman who may need no introduction to many, particularly those who follow media
personalities. Oprah Gail Winfrey is my hero and ultimate role model, who personifies how every human
being should be like, irrespective of how challenging the prevailing circumstances may be. Indeed, she is
perhaps the richest African American woman today, the only female billionaire, the greatest
philanthropist who is black and the black billionaire in North America today. As such, she has scored
many firsts in the society, which has earned her several accolades in recognition of her benevolence,
spirit, and success. To me, she personifies the most ethical person I have ever known, and indeed, she
has an amazing life story, which helps one understand the origin of her ethical uprightness.

Oprah Gail Winfrey is sixty-two years old, having been born in 29 January of 1952. She was born to a
teenage mother in rural Mississippi, and experienced abject poverty, a sharp contrast to her life today.
Indeed, her background is a long sad story full of misfortunes and troubles, which would have made any
child loose morals, turn out badly, and perhaps contemplate death. Indeed, her childhood was troubled
because to start with, she was raped when she was nine and became a mother at fourteen. All this
happened as she lived in inner-city neighborhood in Milwaukee with her mother who was single,
unmarried, and working as a maid. She also spent some of her childhood with her father, who lived in
Tennessee and was a barber, and thus certainly with nothing much to live by. However, most of Oprah’s
early childhood was spent with her maternal grandmother whose name was Hattie Mae Lee, a person of
considerable influence to her. Specifically, despite being reared in poverty, Winfrey learnt to read before
she was three years old, courtesy of her grandmother. She was also active in her local church, thanks to
her grandmother’s close supervision and strictness. Indeed, her reading skills were put into good use at
the church where she became famous for reading and reciting verses from the bible.

As she grew up, she encountered many challenges such as being molested by some of her family
members, experiencing the death of her siblings and not having experienced a regular and stable family
life. She also ran away from home became a mother at fourteen, to a son who passed on shortly after
birth. In addition, she suffered from obesity, a situation she has managed to control through a regiment
of dieting and exercise.

However, she has experienced many successes as well. For instance, from the influence of her strict
grandmother, Oprah excelled in school and even earned a full scholarship to university after winning an
oratory contest. She is now a highly successful entrepreneur with ventures in media by hosting one of
the most successful talk shows in history, the Oprah Winfrey Show. She also owns a radio channel, co-
founded Oxygen, which is a cable television network dedicated to women, owns OWN: Oprah Winfrey
Network, and runs Harpo Productions as its president. As such, she has enjoyed success as
philanthropist, producer, actress, talk show host, and media proprietor.

How Oprah approaches Ethical Dilemmas

Oprah Winfrey has taking it upon herself to improve how people perceive themselves. Indeed, her value
for people overrides her need to make money through her businesses. In fact, despite having sharp
business acumen and being successful in her business ventures, she has made it her life mission to
improve other people’s lives with the proceeds from her enterprises. However, this has put her in
numerous collision courses, some of which have generated controversy, while others have even
transformed industries as well. One incident deserved mention due to the effect it had on farming
practices in the United States. Specifically, Oprah confronted the beef industry in Texas due to what can
be termed as unethical methods of raising cattle for beef production. She in fact, it is claimed that she
was indeed attacking capitalism when she defended herself in court for being accuses of spreading
alarmist statements about the unsafe nature of American beef.

The ethical dilemma that this incident exhibits is that it has been established by research that beef
products are linked with various cancers. In addition, the high content of pharmaceutical products in
beef is associated with the high resistance to medication observed in many Americans today. In addition,
fast foods such as hamburgers are targeted towards marginalized groups such as the African Americans,
which are responsible for the high rate of obesity observed in such communities. However, America is
built on a robust foundation of liberty, which means that people and industries are free to engage in
business and prosper, provided they do so within the confines of law. As such, growth aids that are fed to
cattle are not outlawed in the United States. In addition, use of legal pharmaceutical in the cattle
industry in the United States is majorly responsible for the success of the beef industry therein. As such,
Oprah was faced with the dilemma of either supporting business as a means of achieving the American
dream, through which she is a beneficiary, or protecting the masses and particularly marginalized
communities from what is perceived as being used to help the upper class in the United States, which is
white dominated. Oprah opted to protect the marginalized and discriminated members of the society
rather that side with business people, despite being a successful businessperson herself. For that, she
had to endure being labeled as an activist out to discredit the beef industry, which is a hallmark of the
success of businesses in the United States and before, considering that companies such as McDonalds
and other fast food chains attribute their success to meat products such as hamburgers. Indeed, she won
this case by taking a moral rights approach, which in turn change how the beef industry in Texas
performed its business.

She has also used the proceeds of her businesses to change people’s lives by donating generously to
charity within the United States and beyond. In addition, she used her talk show, the Oprah Winfrey
Show, as a therapy session for people who have been living with secrets and unresolved issues in their
lives. In fact, for this, she has been accused of trading with peoples’ emotion to make money, and
creating a culture of confessions among Americans. However, Oprah has maintained that she is always
driven by the need to equalize people irrespective of their backgrounds and taking a non-judgmental
approach when dealing with peoples’ emotions. This perspective is rooted in her upbringing and
childhood tribulations, for which she draws her strength and positive approach to life rather that
breaking her resolve to leasing a successful life.

Why Oprah is my Ethical Role Model

Oprah inspires me when she is successful without using dubious means and despite having an
underprivileged background. Although members of her family molested her, she holds no grudges
against them. In addition, she has a very positive outlook towards life despite undergoing a difficult
childhood and experiencing several misfortunes. Notably, she respects motherhood so much that she is
said to have decided not to have children because she thought she would make a terrible mother
because she was not raised well. Despite this tough ethical stand, which is anchored in the belief to do
what is right, she is not critical of her family, an indication of the resoluteness with which she approaches
life. I have relied on Oprah Winfrey to create perceptions about life generally that is not only focused on
success even when confronted with barriers, but also use of success to improve the livelihoods of other
people irrespective of their race, creed, and opinions. Indeed, she invigorates me to make ethical
decisions in every situation I face, which is based on the belief that everyone has a right to be in this
world and deserves a chance at succeeding as well. She also inspires me to share my successes with
others, who may not have had the opportunities I have. Finally, Oprah motivates me to be philanthropic
by encouraging me to handle success with grace and to engage in courses that influence the lives of the
underprivileged positively.
