Lesson Plan for Writing Mechanics

I. Objectives
a. Identify the rules of the written language, such as capitalization, punctuation and
spelling.
b. Show cooperation and teamwork through participating in the group activities.
c. Underline the deviation of an essay and recreate it using the rules of written language.

II. Subject Matter


a. Concept: Learning grammar rules and the mechanics of writing are critical components
of learning to write. Having strong skills in writing and grammar allows writers to get their
message or story to their readers in a clear and understandable way. It is important to
know the rules of grammar and how to use them properly.

B. Drill

C. Activity
Group the class into 4 groups. Each group will hold a card (g1-capitalization, g2-
punctuation, g3-colon, g4-semicolon). Each card has a key words about the rules they
are holding.
Teacher will show a sentence on the board and one representative of the group must
raise their card if they find that there is a mistaken in the sentence and they claim that
their rule (written in their card) is the one deviated.
Teacher will reveal answer every after one sentence.

D. Analysis
Teacher will show simple sentences, and students have to figure out which is
grammatically wrong:
1. Her name is anna.
2. Help?
3. I ordered the following supplies, potatoes, sugar, eggs, flour, and coffee.

E. Abstraction
Discussion:
1. What is capitalization, punctuation, and semicolon?
2. When do we use capitalization, punctuation, and semicolon?
3. Give examples of each rule in a sentence.

F. Application
*Prior to this lesson, cut out and hide the three large punctuation marks somewhere
in the room. For example, stick one of the punctuation marks in a place where it doesn't
belong, such as taped to a computer or stuck to the corner of a bulletin board.

*Tell your students that they have some sentence mysteries to solve. Introduce the task
of searching for the hidden punctuation marks.

*Invite your students to play “I Spy” with three different punctuation marks: a period, a
question mark, and an exclamation point.

*Ask your students to look around the room and signal when they locate a punctuation
mark. Signals can include standing up or raising a hand.

*After all three punctuation marks have been located, tell your students that they're going
to be learning more about how to use those three different punctuation marks.

For example: What's your favorite flavor? Ice cream has milk. I like ice cream!

IV. Assessment
Quiz: In a 1/2 sheet of paper, write “C” if the sentence is correct, and write “I” if the
sentence is incorrect then underline the mistake.

In a 1/4 sheet of paper, reflect why writing mechanics and its rules are important.
Take note: reflection must at least have 1 paragraph.
