Three days of food and agriculture
The Basin Food Summit will cultivate opportunities for
producers, processors and food buyers and create space
and programming for growth, networking, collaborations
and the celebration of local food. This expanded event is
returning for its second year and is open to Basin resi-
dents in the agriculture and food industry as well as buy-
ers and food business supports from further afield.
The Basin Food & Buyers Expo will take place Thurs-
day, October 24. Food producers and processors from the
Basin will have the opportunity to grow their market and
meet new buyers (grocery, restaurant, distribution and
food service) from across Western Canada.
Friday, October 25 is the Agriculture Forum which will
gather together the region’s food growers, makers and
support services. At the forum participants can network,
workshop and brainstorm around developing a thriv-
ing food and agriculture economy. This conference will
explore new technology and regenerative practices with
targeted program streams and experts for food business,
community and both established and emerging farms.
Friday and Saturday, October 25 and 26 is the Young
Agrarians Mixer. As part of the Agriculture Forum, join
us for two days of farming workshops geared towards new
and young farmers looking to develop skills, build knowl-
edge and network with farming peers.

CKCA 2019–2020 funded projects
Over 150 arts and culture projects – including the
Columbia Basin Culture Tour – have received a total
of $750,000 in funding support for the 2019-2020 sea-
son through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alli-
ance (CKCA), in partnership with Columbia Basin
Trust.
Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance Chair Laura
White commented, “Every year, I’m impressed by the
scope of the projects for which applicants are seek-
ing funding; there are artists taking their first steps
towards becoming professionals, to individuals seek-
ing support for major projects and everything in
between.
“The CKCA Steering Committee members are
excited to see the projects that receive funding suc-
cessfully bring their efforts to fruition. We are also
very pleased to continue our relationship with
Columbia Basin Trust, by fostering excellence in arts
and culture and contributing to livable communities
across the region.”
Funding applications were adjudicated in May by
the CKCA steering committee, with input from com-
munity arts councils. Support will go toward a wide
range of projects, including individual and group
projects, master classes, touring and major exhibition
projects.
“In the Columbia Basin, artists use many different
mediums in their artistic endeavours,” said Michelle
d’Entremont, manager, delivery of benefits, Colum-
bia Basin Trust. “The Arts and Culture Program puts
more wind in the sails of artistic and cultural efforts,
supporting artists and organizations while adding
vibrancy to Basin communities.”
CKCA funding helps individuals and organizations
realize arts and cultural projects across all arts dis-
ciplines, including visual art, theatre, music, dance,

Wildlife enhancement project
BC Hydro is constructing a wildlife enhancement
project in the drawdown zone of the Burton Flats.
Construction is scheduled to begin in early Septem-
ber, pending all necessary permits.
This project is expected to benefit nesting and
migratory birds as well as other wildlife affected by
reservoir operations. This will be accomplished by
creating, protecting or enhancing habitat for Western
Toad, nesting and migratory birds, amphibians and
other wildlife.
Project background:
Two sites were originally being considered for this
project – Burton Flats and Lower Inonoaklin. Burton
Flats is located south of Nakusp, on the east side of
the Arrow Lakes Reservoir and the Lower Inonoaklin
site is located south of the Fauquier ferry on the west
side of the reservoir. We decided to pursue the Burton
Flats site because of a greater potential for benefits to
wildlife. At this time, we have decided not to go ahead
with the Lower Inonoaklin site, but may revisit this at
a later date.
Current status and next steps:
Construction will take place in two phases. If condi-
tions are suitable and we receive the necessary per-
mits, we expect work on Phase One to begin at the
beginning of September and be completed by the end
of October:
– Starting on Tuesday, September 3 crews will start
mobilizing on site to construct the first phase of the
project. During this time, crews will be on site from 7
am to 7 pm, Monday through Saturday and from 8 am
to 7 pm on Sundays. We anticipate that this work will
be completed by late October.
– Crews will also be on site during the second week
of September to salvage some sedges that are located in
the construction zone. These sedges will be replanted
during the planting phase of the project.
Support for wildlife:
We have undertaken and are continuing to imple-
ment pre-construction monitoring at these sites
and will continue to monitor post-construction
at the Burton site. We are also currently conduct-
ing numerous studies under the Columbia River
Water Use Plan to better understand the impacts of
our Arrow Lakes Reservoir operations on a num-
ber of non-power values including vegetation, fish,
wildlife, recreation and archaeology and help future
decision making.

 Open burning prohibitions
amended in the southeast
Effective as of noon (Pacific time) on Tuesday, Septem-
ber 10, 2019, Category 2 and Category 3 open burning
prohibitions within the Southeast Fire Centre’s jurisdic-
tion will be amended, due to a decreased wildfire risk.

Category 2 Open Burn Permits: One or two concur-
rently burning piles, no larger than two metres high by
three metres wide; and the burning of stubble or grass
over an area less than 0.2 hectares. The use of fireworks,
burn barrels, burn cages, sky lanterns and exploding
binary targets will also be allowed.
Category 3 Open Burning will be permitted through-
out the Arrow, Kootenay Lake and Columbia fire zones
within the Southeast Fire Centre’s jurisdiction.
However, a Category 3 open burning prohibition will
remain in effect for the Boundary, Invermere and Cran-
brook fire zones, where the following activities are still
prohibited:
• Any fire larger than two metres high by three
metres wide
• Three or more concurrently burning piles no larger
than two metres high by three metres wide
• The burning of stubble or grass over an area greater
than 0.2 hectares
• The burning of one or more windrows
Open Burning Precautions: Anyone planning to con-
duct a Category 2 or Category 3 open burn in the South-
east Fire Centre (where permitted) must do the following:
• Check the local venting index (see website link
below). The venting index must be “good” on the
day the fire is lit and “good” or “fair” for the follow-
ing day.
• Follow the Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation.
• Use safe burning practices: Create a fireguard
around the planned fire site by clearing away twigs,
grass, leaves and other combustible material; never
leave a fire unattended; make sure that the fire is
fully extinguished and the ashes are cold to the
touch before leaving the area for any length of time.
• Anyone planning to conduct a Category 3 burn
must obtain a burn registration number ahead
of time (at no charge) by calling 1-888-797-1717.
Burn registration numbers are entered in the Open
Fire Tracking System, which allows the BC Wildfire
Service to track open burning activity throughout
BC.
• Check with local authorities (e.g. fire department,
municipality or regional district) for any local
restrictions or regulations.
Anyone found in contravention of an open burning
prohibition may be issued a ticket for $1,150, required
to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if
convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced
to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contrib-
utes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered
to pay all firefighting and associated costs, as well as the
value of resources damaged or destroyed by the wildfire.
The Southeast Fire Centre encompasses the area extend-
ing from the United States border in the south to Mica
Dam in the north and from the Okanagan Highlands and
Monashee Mountains in the west to the BC – Alberta bor-
der in the east. The Southeast Fire Centre includes the Sel-
kirk and Rocky Mountain natural resource districts.

 West Nile virus risk increases
The mosquito species likely to carry West Nile virus is
most active in August. West Nile virus is a disease that is
spread from infected corvid birds (crows, ravens, magpies
and jays) to humans through mosquito bites. It was first
detected in BC in the South Okanagan during the sum-
mer of 2009. Since then there have been five human cases
– all locally acquired in the Okanagan. Last year the virus
was detected in birds and a horse in the East Kootenay
area, confirming the virus is present there as well. Several
parts of Canada and the US continue to report ongoing
West Nile virus activity.
The risk of infection from handling birds is very low;
however, you should not use your bare hands to handle
wild birds (dead or alive). If you need to move a dead bird,
precautions should be taken. Unusual clusters of dead
birds can be reported to the BC Interagency Wild Bird
Mortality Investigation at 1-866-431-BIRD (2473).
Mosquitoes can also transmit West Nile virus to horses
and occasionally to other animals. Horse owners are
advised to contact their veterinarians for information
about equine vaccines for West Nile virus.
The risk of becoming seriously ill from West Nile virus
infection is low for most people; however, the elderly and
those with compromised immune systems are more at risk.
There are things everyone can do both at home and while
travelling to reduce the risk of infection. Any activity that
prevents mosquitoes from biting or breeding can help to
reduce the risk of becoming infected with West Nile virus.
Prevent mosquito breeding around your home. It
doesn’t take much time or water for mosquitoes to develop
from eggs into adults. Anything that can hold water
can be a mosquito breeding area. Identify and remove
potential breeding areas on your property – empty sau-
cers under flowerpots; change water in bird baths twice
a week; unclog rain gutters; drain tarps, tires and other
debris where rain water may collect; and, install a pump in
ornamental ponds or stock them with fish. Stagnant back-
yard pools can be a big source of mosquitoes and should
be maintained regularly to prevent mosquito growth.
Install screens on windows. Screens will help prevent
mosquitoes from coming indoors.
Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn. This is the
time of day the mosquitoes that can carry the virus are
most active.
Wear protective clothing. If you are in an area with
lots of mosquitoes, wear loose fitting, light coloured, full-
length pants and a long-sleeved shirt.
Use mosquito repellent. Apply mosquito repellent to
areas of exposed skin. Check the product label for instruc-
tions on proper use. Repellents containing DEET are safe
for those over six months of age when used according to
the directions on the label. DEET-free products are avail-
able, but may not provide long-lasting protection. View
the HealthLinkBC file on DEET (www.healthlinkbc.ca/
healthfiles/hfile96.stm) for guidelines on how frequently
to apply repellent.
Interior Health works closely with the BC Centre for
Disease Control and Canadian Blood Services to monitor
West Nile virus activity. Surveillance includes screening the
blood supply and reporting human as well as animal cases.

SAR’s busiest month on record!
The Kootenay based Search and Rescue team, based in
one of the busiest adventure regions in the province, has
recorded its busiest month ever.
According to Stefan Lettrari, the organization’s presi-
dent, the recent purchase of a vehicle and the structuring
of specialist teams made the job a little easier.
“We have a very strong team in Kaslo with a diverse
set of skills and a group of very capable leaders,” said
Lettrari, adding, “All our available assets were used on
multiple occasions with multiple teams on different
calls. The fact that we have a cohesive team allows us
to deploy to different locations competently. The fact
that we have a supportive community and government
also ensures that we have the tools to do the job that
the public expects,” For now and through the fall, the
organization is regrouping and focusing on training for
what is likely to be another busy season through the
winter months.
The group has the ability to respond to still and swift
water incidents with the 501 Marine response unit on the
lake, mountain rescue incidents with 502 and motor vehi-
cle incidents and high angle rescues with unit 501. Addi-
tionally the boat crews are capable of dealing with marine
environmental spills on inland lakes and waterways.
While all the members of the team are multi-disciplined
to some extent, specialist teams are forming to be able to
respond too specific incidents in the mountains, on swift
water or for long line access with a helicopter to stabilize
and recover subjects from challenging environments as
quickly as possible.

 Film offers conversation on
community spaces and homelessness
On a bitterly cold night a large group of homeless men
decide they’re not going to leave the public library at clos-
ing time. It hasn’t happened – but it could.
That scenario is the subject of The Public a new film
written by and starring Emelio Estevez. The Nelson Public
Library and Nelson at its Best have joined forces to screen
the film on Tuesday, October 1 at 7 pm at the Nelson Civic
Theatre. Following the movie will be a panel discussion on
the topic of public libraries, homelessness and safe spaces.
In The Public, what begins as a nonviolent sit-in as
shelter from the elements soon escalates into a standoff
with police led by a crisis negotiator (Alec Baldwin) and
a savvy district attorney (Christian Slater) – who has his
own agenda. In the middle are two librarians, played by
Emilio Estevez and Jena Malone. The film puts a face to
people living on the margins of society.
Panel moderator George Chandler of Nelson at its Best
sees the screening as a unique opportunity to consider
and discuss an important topic. “A strong value of this
film is that it reflects ongoing daily realities in the word,
including our community. It also populates big issues of
homelessness, isolation and poverty with humanity –
everyone has their own story and we are invited to see
them as human beings, no matter what appearances or
our own viewpoints might initially tell us.”
Panelists include Cheryl Dowden from Ankors, Chief
Constable Paul Burkart of the Nelson City Police, Tracey
Therrien, Chief Librarian for the Nelson Public Library
and Jeremy Kelly from Nelson Street Outreach, who has
also experienced homelessness.
“The Nelson Library is many things in our community:
educational resource, literacy champion, social hub and
a safe place for those who need it,” says Tracey Therrien.
“Our library users come from every walk of life; this is a
very relevant conversation for us and for the community.”

Ski program receives classroom tools
Future leaders in the outdoor recreation indus-
try attending Selkirk College’s Ski Resort Operations
& Management (SROAM) program have received
a learning boost from the world’s leading haul rope
manufacturer.
Headquartered in Switzerland, Fatzer specializes in
steel wire rope innovation and production for a variety
of industries from mining and fishing to road bridges and
ski lifts. This summer, the company sent a steel box full of
haul rope samples that is now being used to help learners
at Selkirk College.
“It’s important to have this kind of support from the
industry,” says SROAM instructor Ross White. “Our
students will graduate into an environment that is ever-
changing and to have global leading companies like
Fatzer providing these classroom tools helps tremen-
dously.” White is a local ski industry veteran who has
been teaching at Selkirk College since 2006. The for-
mer manager of outdoor operations at Whitewater Ski
Resort, White mentors students in a variety of differ-
ent facets including teaching the Ski Lift Maintenance
course.
Prior to the Fatzer donation of leading edge haul rope
technology, White was using sections of the former Sum-
mit Chair at Whitewater that was not current with what
graduating students will see at today’s resorts. “Our learn-
ers need to see physical objects to be able to relate to what
we are teaching,” says White, who is also a Red Seal mill-
wright. “Visual aids and teaching tools help get the mes-
sage home and students get it a lot quicker.”
The Selkirk College SROAM program is heading into its
40th year of providing the education, skills and training
required for graduates to succeed in all aspects of the ski
industry from snowmaking and terrain park operations
to guest services and marketing to ski patrol and general
management. It is now the only program of its kind in
Canada and draws students from around the world who
come to study on Selkirk College’s Tenth Street Campus
in Nelson.
The program receives ongoing support from the indus-
try in a variety of ways including an advisory board that
meets with faculty and students on an annual basis.

While digital navigation has become an essential skill,
it also comes with its own set of dangers. From online
banking and mobile apps, to online shopping and credit
and debit cards, it’s important that you take precautions to
keep your personal and financial information safe.
Whether you’re looking to beef up your own security
or teach your kids cyber awareness, here are some simple
strategies for creating strong passwords:
Get Creative. While each login will have different pass-
word requirements that you must adhere to, it’s a best
practice to include numbers, symbols, capital and lower-
case letters. And think of out-of-the-box ways to incorpo-
rate these. Avoid the use of full words and anything that
relates to your personal information, such as names and
birthdates.
Differentiate. Using different credentials for every login
is a great way to help keep your information – and your-
self – secure. To help with remembering numerous pass-
words, track them as soon as you create a new account in

Go Beyond The Bare Minimum. There is often a mini-
mum requirement of eight characters for passwords.
Try surpassing this with 12 or more characters to create

MARTY HAROLD WALTER CAREW

Marty Harold Walter Carew, b. Trail, BC May
22, 1977; d. Port Moody, BC September 2,
2019 from small intestine cancer.
Marty spent his formative years in the small
community of Castlegar where, thanks to
friends, teachers, and family, he developed
the characteristics that would define his life:
determination, creativity, and humour.
He attended Stanley Humphries High School
where his best subject seemed to be golf!
Graduating in 1996 he pursued adventure
on the high seas with his best friend, Angela
Osmachenko, where they both worked
as Youth Co-Coordinators for Children’s
Activities for Carnival Cruise Lines. Yearning
to get his land legs back, Marty settled in
Coquitlam where he trained and worked as a
teaching assistant for special needs children
for the Burnaby School District. It was
during this time that he met the love of his
life, Cheryl Nelson. Marty and Cheryl were
married in Assisi, Italy in 2007 and in March
of 2009 their daughter, Chimera, was born.
Marty had an absolute love for children.
Marty and Cheryl started their children’s en-
tertainment business Young Wizards Acad-
emy in 2015. In the fall of that year their
business was nominated for Douglas Col-
lege’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award. By
the fall of 2017 Marty was named by Today’s
Parent Magazine as #1 of the top 10 chil-
dren’s birthday entertainers in the Lower
Mainland. These and many other accolades,

although received with gratitude, were not
Marty’s objective. Marty strongly believed
that the power of imagination could allow
children to develop creative, healthy ways
of dealing with problems in their forma-
tive years: “The beauty of imagination is it
allows you to see it before it happens, cre-
ating what you are not now but what you
can be!” The testimonials from clients on his
website indicate that he succeeded at do-
ing that for children and adults alike!
Marty loved life and family. Three months
before he died he and Cheryl hiked 200 kms
across the Highland Mountains of Scotland;
two months before he died Marty took his
family to Australia where he surfed, sailed
and golfed; two weeks before he died Mar-
ty golfed his final 18 holes with his brother.
His final days were spent with Cheryl and
Chimera. Encumbered with the pains of
cancer and the side effects of the necessary
ever present bag of drugs, Marty’s determi-
nation and ability to visualize his goals gave
him the strength and courage to take con-
trol of the little time he had left and make
the most of that time.
The threads of Marty’s life are woven into
the fabric of many other lives and especially
those of family and friends who loved him:
his wife, his Princess Leia, Cheryl, who stayed
at his side throughout this final journey on
earth loving, advocating, and caring for him,
and his beloved daughter Chimera who met
the challenge of her dad’s illness with cour-
age and humour, both of Port Coquitlam;
devoted big brother Jody and partner Julie
of Brisbane, Australia; friend forever, Angela
Osmachenko of Prince George; the Carews
of Castlegar: mother Marsha, father Glen,
Aunt Ellena and Uncle Martin, Tom (Mako),
Colin, Jake, Eddie, Sam; numerous Carew
relatives in Ontario; Aunt Norma Moll, Kath-
erine, Becca and Holly Symons of Vernon;
Diane Marshall of Brentwood Bay; and the
Nelsons: Dave and Carmen of Nanaimo; Ian,
Jodi, Andrew, Mathew of Fort McMurray.
Marty did not want a service of remem-
brance; he requested should something
be held then it must include children and
it must be a happy event. The family will
hold that happy event next year in Port Co-
quitlam. If desired, donations to Marty’s Go
Fund Me Campaign online or to Crossroads
Hospice Society, Suite 209—2773 Barnet
Hwy, Coquitlam, BC V3B 1C2 will be deeply
appreciated.
Marty’s family is very grateful to all those
friends and family who took time to travel
to Vancouver to visit Marty during the time
of his illness; to those who made special ef-
forts for our family’s benefit while we were
in Australia; to Dr. Michael Van Vliet for
continuous contact with Marty and family;
to Marty’s meditation group who kept him
close to them at his time of need; to Patricia,
Russ, Kevin, Dustin Rilcof & families for giving
our family a place to stay; to Keli Moore for
setting up a Go Fund Me page for Marty and
to all those who have contributed to Mar-
ty’s Go Fund Me Campaign since 2018 and
continue to do so for Cheryl and Chimera;
to Glen’s customers at the barber shop in
Castlegar who oftentimes gave much more
than the price of a haircut with the words:
“for your boy;” to those who helped us deal
with everyday problems so that our time
was free to be with Marty; to so many who
sent cards and emails, brought us food,
flowers, and visited with us, or stopped us in
the street to give us a hug. Everlasting grat-
itude to the staff of Crossroads Hospice in
Port Moody who gave Marty a place where
he found peace and exceptional caregiving.
Marty would not want us to weep for him.
He had a happy life expressing his passion
for children through his work and envel-
oped in love and laughter with his family
and friends. Destiny does not provide us
with much advance notice as to time of
our demise. Marty put what time he had
to good use leaving those of us who knew
and loved him with the immeasurable joy of
sharing this miniscule time in eternity with
his beautiful presence.

You can! The Trail & District After School Band (TDASB)
provides the opportunity for musician-wanna-be’s to pick
up a concert instrument and learn to play easy group
arrangements.
When it began in 2012, the TDASB was primarily tar-
geted at preteen (11+) students, offering an introduction
to basic music skills that might be developed in the high-
school years. As parents and grandparents started to join
in, the group has expanded and now offers an innovative,
intergenerational experience for all ages.
Anyone age 11 and older is welcome to come along to
the Beginner group on Tuesday afternoons, no musical
experience is required. Choose an instrument from the
wide selection available, then learn to play the first notes
and read simple music. Cost for September – June is only

The Performing Arts series begins...
Kicking off the 2019-20 Performing Arts Trail season is
the Symphony of the Kootenays on Saturday, October 5 at
7:30 pm in The Bailey Theatre.
A unique orchestral treat for your ears and mind, the
Symphony of the Kootenays will perform Beethoven’s
Fifth for the first time, including the Coriolanus Over-
ture, 5th Symphony and 5th Piano Concerto.
Celebrating their 44th year and the 250th anniversary
of the composer’s birthday, this 44 member orchestra is
led by conductor Jeff Faragher, a professional cellist with a
youthful passion and energy. The symphony is also joined
by San Francisco based, Castlegar native, Amy Zanrosso,
a world-renowned pianist.
The rest of the orchestra is comprised of world-class
musicians, many of whom come from the Kootenay area,
including Rossland, Castlegar, Nelson and Kaslo with the
remainder from Alberta and the Okanagan Valley.

Closing dinner for Oxygen exhibition
Join local artists prOphecy sun and Darren Fleet’ at
Oxygen Art Centre Friday, September 27 at 5:30 pm. The
Closing Dinner celebrates the exhibition Nostalgic Geog-
raphy: Mama and Papa have Trains, Orchards and Moun-
tains in their Backyard and the support and collaboration
that took place throughout the creation of the video and
sound installation. The artists wish to invite the commu-
nity to a shared meal in the gallery as a way to thank the
many players that made this work possible, as well as to
extend a seat at the table to others.
The dinner will be held in the gallery among the instal-
lation. Prepared by the artists, the meal will be vegan, veg-
etarian and sensitive to dietary restrictions. This event is
by donation, everyone is welcome to attend.

The City of Trail launched the
review and update of its Official
Community Plan (OCP), with the
assistance of planning and sustain-
ability experts WSP Group Canada
Ltd., at a public open house on Tues-
day, September 17, 2019.
Approximately fifty people
attended the public engagement
event that took place from 3:30 to
6:30 pm in the multi-purpose room at
the Trail Riverfront Centre. Detailed
and interactive display panels were
set up throughout the space so guests
could gather information while also
providing their input to the OCP.
WSP and City representatives were
on-site to answer questions about the
panels and the OCP process and to
direct folks to the City of Trail Offi-
cial Community Plan Survey 1, a
seven section survey designed to col-
lect data and opinions on the future
of Trail’s land use and development,
housing and commercial and indus-
trial growth.
The survey is now available online
at www.surveymonkey.com/r/
trailOCP or through the city’s web-
site at www.trail.ca/OCP Hard cop-
ies of the survey can be picked up
and returned to city hall by Friday,
October 11, 2019. The OCP is meant
to represent the community’s vision
and the city encourages everyone
to have their say by filling out the
survey.

Clear old plants and weeds from your garden bed or
pots to make it easier for spring planting and keep insects
at bay. If not using winterized pots, bring them indoors.
Clear leaves from the lawn, aerate and consider a fall
fertilizing.
Decks and garden furniture will need a good cleaning
and, if appropriate, staining. Don’t forget to properly store
cushions and outdoor tablecloths so that they can be used
again next season. Garden tools also need a good cleaning
or wipe down before storing for the winter.
Moving Inside: Plan and prepare before you start. Make
sure you have reusable boxes and bags on hand and create
some storage space indoors or out. If outside, make sure
the space is sheltered. Organize room by room. When
swapping out seasonal clothes in your closet, take some
time to make sure you still need or use each item. If not,

Test Internet connectivity
performance!
Residents in the Columbia Basin and Boundary regions
are being urged to try out a new online testing portal
which is designed to measure Internet connection speeds.
“The Regional Broadband Committee has been working
to get a better understanding of current broadband ser-
vices and to advocate for high-speed Internet for residents
and businesses within the Columbia Basin and Boundary
regions,” explains Regional Broadband Committee Chair
Rob Gay. “This online portal will provide us with specific
data and give us a much clearer picture of the true state of
our current connectivity.”
Residents can access the testing portal and run the per-
formance test as many times as they would like and the
Committee is hoping to see strong participation. “The
more data we collect, the greater our understanding will
be. We are hoping to see people from every geographic
corner of the region participate,” says Gay.
The data will not only be helpful in providing the Com-
mittee with valuable data, it will also help to prioritize
areas of need and be useful in determining eligibility for
federal and provincial connectivity granting programs.
Although there has been some work done to identify the
state of connectivity in rural regions such as ours, to date
there is a shortage of accurate and quantifiable data. “This
performance test will help us close that data gap and we
strongly encourage residents to log in at least once,” adds
Gay.
The online portal can be accessed at https://perfor-
mance.cira.ca/columbiabasin Participants provide their
location and hit start. The test takes less than two minutes
AND HERE to run.
