THE FILIPINO FAMILY

INTRODUCTION

According to C.V.Good “ value education is the aggregate of all the process through

which a person develops abilities and other forms of behavior of the positive values

in the society in which he lives”.

Values education firstly begins in the family, then continues at educational

institutions. Basic values are acquired respectively by taking parents as role models

and education at schools. For the strengthened personality traits, the values thought

at whole life must be coherent. Especially consistency of school and family that is

important in children's personality highlights for values education. If there is no

consistency between the values that students learned or witnessed in the school and

the family, then conflicts have occurred and these situations cause personality

disorders.

The purpose of this term paper is to know the form of family and its aspect. The

family is the most important primary group and the smallest also most powerful

unit of social organization. It is the first and the most immediate social environment

to which a child is exposed. It is an outstanding primary group because it is in the

family that the child develops its basic attitudes. According to Burgess and Locke

define family as “A group of persons united by ties of marriage, blood or adoption,

consisting a single household, interacting and inter-communicating with each other

in their respective social roles of husband and wife, mother and father, son and

daughter, brother and sister creating a common culture.”


BODY

The family has various categories according to organization and membership, First

is the nuclear family it is composed of a father, mother, and children in the union

recognized by the society and it has two kinds are family of orientations is refers to

the family that you were born and raised in while the family of procreation refers to

the family you create through marriage and by having or adopting children. The

second is an extended family is a family that extends beyond the nuclear family,

consisting of parents like father, mother, and their children, aunts, uncles,

grandparents and cousins, all living in the same household. It has two kinds also

they are conjugal family it is Conjugal means that there is a marriage relationship

that the spouse and their children are important and the consanguineal family is the

relationship of the person is important, Parents, siblings, uncles, aunts,

grandparents, cousins, nieces and nephews they're all relatives. A relative can be

connected to your family through blood or by marriage.

The classification of the family According to into place of residence there is a

 Patrilocal family is where a woman gets married and moves next door to her

husband's parents.

 Matrilocal family refers to custom or culture where the husband goes to live

with the wife's family.

 Bilocal family in which couples, upon marriage, choose to live with or near

either spouse's parents.


 Neolcal family in which a newly married couple resides separately from both

the husband's natal household and the wife's natal household.

 Avunlocal family is one in which a married couple traditionally lives with the

man's mother's eldest brother.

According to descent ;

 patrilineal is related to your relationship with your father, or your family's

line of male descendants — for example, your father, his father, his father's

father, and so on.

 Matrilocal in which a married couple lives with or near the wife's parents.

 Bilateral in which the relatives on the mother's side and father's side are

equally important for emotional ties or transfer of property or wealth.

According to an authority they have ;

The patriarchal family is that a male adult is a leader and the order of

importance/power falls to him first. If something happens to him then the next male

in line takes power. Women are not considered to be able to hold power while

the Matriarchal family the mother is the head of the family or the one who lead.

The last is to form of marriage ;

 Monogamy is when you are married to, or in a sexual relationship with, one

person at a time.

 Polygamy having several and specifically more than two spouses at one time

 Polygyny a man has more that one wife.

 Polyandry refers to one woman with multiple husbands.


 Equalitarian family is the husband and wife have equal authority and jointly

make a major decision.

 Matricentic family the absence of the father, for example, the father is

working abroad gives a mother a dominant position in the family, however, a

father shares with the mother in terms of decision making.

Here are the functions of family

The family is the unit of reproduction it needs Addition of New Members, Physical

Care of Members the parents take the role of providers, and protectors providing

the child with his basic needs, Socialization of Children the family should be

socialized. Then Social Control of Members teaching children right from wrong,

discipline, etc. provides status to the members, every child

Producing and Consuming Goods and Services.

The family development task is a family Stage marker that the family begins at the

establishment of a common household by two people; this may or may not include

marriage. The family task is Individual independence to a couple.

Physical maintenance it s providing shelter, food clothing, health care that needs in

our body.

Allocation of the resources a meeting family that needs and costs, apportioning,

materials goods and facilities.

Division of labour is assigning responsibility and managing a household.

Socializing the family members guiding internalization of increasing the maturity.


Reproduction, recruitment and release of family members are bearing or adopting

children and rearing them for release of maturity, incorporating new members by

marriage.

Maintenance of orders is providing means communication, establishing types and

intensity of interaction.

Placement of members in the larger society fitting into the community, relating to

the church, schools, organizational life, political and economic systems.

maintenance of motivation and morale are rewarding members of achieving,

satisfying individuals needs for acceptance, encouragement and affection.

CONCLUSION

Filipinos as strongly valuing, prioritizing, and cultivating relational bonds,

especially within the family. Developmental research findings have shown the

importance of the family. The family is widely considered as the most important

institution because it is the first institution where young children are acculturated

and where they learn their values and get a sense of belonging. The family is

important because it is the basic unit of social structure and an important agent of

socialization. According to the Bible (KJV), God created man in His image, He only

created male and female.

"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his

wife: and they shall be one flesh."


In 1 Timothy 3:2, KJV

"A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good

behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;" KJV ,

1 Timothy 3:12, KJV

"Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own

houses well.

Titus 1:6, KJV

"If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused

of riot or unruly."
