Module 2- Valuing Others and Their Circumstances
Lesson 2: Observing Other’s Circumstances

September 10, 2019


I. Objective:
 Analyze literature as a means of valuing other people and their various circumstances in life. ( EN9LT-IIb-15)

II. Subject Matter:


Topic: Analyzing literature as a means of valuing other people and their various circumstances in life.
References: LM – A Journey Through Anglo- American Literature,
Module 2, Valuing Others and Their Circumstances p. 133
Reading Material: “The Man with a Hoe” by Edwin Markham
Materials: Pictures / Visual Aids/ Projector / Laptop / Adhesive tape

III. Procedure:
 Greetings
 Checking of Attendance
 Review: What are examples of the literary works that you have remembered that we have discussed in the
previous lesson?

A. Motivation:
 What are the literary pieces or written works (short stories, poems, songs, novels, etc.) that you cannot
forget until this time?
 What makes that story so important to you?
 What did you learn about that story?
 Motive Question: How do our circumstances help us value the most important thing in life?

B. Activity
A. Listen to me!
A1. Knowing the Author
 Who is Edwin Markham?
 The poem published in the year 1898, how many years the poem “The Man with a Hoe” existing up to this
present time?
A2. Build your vocabulary
 The students will be group into five
 Teacher will facilitate unlocking difficulties (vocabularies). Students may also get their phones and open a
dictionary application so they could easily find definitions of the difficult words.
B. Let’s do it!
B1. Make sense to me
Instructions:
 Teacher will group the students into 5.
 Each group will be handed with phrases/sentences that might describe the meaning of the stanzas in the
poem.
 Students have to pick out these phrases /sentences and post it according to what stanza does it refer.
B2. Small Group Differentiated Activities
General Instructions:
 Students will have to do differentiated task (SGDA) with their groupmates.
 Each group will do the following:
o Group 1- What’s going on?
Let the group answer the 1-4 guide questions on page 137 of the LM.
o Group 2- Dissecting the text
Let the group answer the 5-8 guide questions on page 137 of the LM.
o Group 3- Visualizing the text
In stanza 1- The group will sketch/draw the situation of the Man with the Hoe.
o Group 4- Frozen scene!
The group will make a tableau from any stanza of the poem.
There must be one representative to explain what scene they have created.
o Group 5- Compare and share
Create a Ven Diagram showing the comparison of worker according to God's intention versus how
the persona (character) of the poem perceives the worker.
Process Questions:
1. What is a hoe?
2. What is the use of a hoe?
3. What is the importance of the hoe in the poem, what does it symbolize?

*A video clip presentation of a farmer


C. Analysis
1. Based on the title of the poem, (The man With A Hoe), what type of worker can you associate with it?
2. What lines in the poem that shows the kind of life the character has?
3. What kind of life does the character has in the poem?
4. If you have the power to ease up the situation of the man with the hoe, what would you do?
5. How does the reading text help you appreciate the man with a hoe and his circumstances in life?

D. Abstraction:
What is literature?
What are the kinds of literature?
What is the importance of these written works in valuing other people and their various circumstances in life?

Literature- most generically, is anybody of written works. More restrictively, literature refers to writing considered to
be an art form or any single writing deemed to have artistic or intellectual value, often due to deploying language in
ways that differ from ordinary usage.
Kinds of Literature- these are the poetry, drama, prose, fiction, non- fiction, short story, song, journalism and essay.
Importance of these written works in valuing other people and their various circumstances in life -Literature
can make us a better person, if we have a great desire to become better, to learn from the examples in literature (or
history) what are the weaknesses that we should overcome. As persons we can value these written works if we have
learnings from it that can help us realize to become more responsible and positive individuals in overcoming different
challenges and whatever circumstances in life may be.

E. Application
General Direction:
 Students will be given a copy about an inspiring short story of a Filipino school teacher.
 By pair, they will know and examine the character of the story using the character chart.

Direction: Use the character chart to examine the character in the short story.

IV. Evaluation
General Direction:
 Students will be given another copy about an inspiring short story of a Filipino school teacher.
 Individually, they will know and examine the character of the story using the character chart.

V. Assignment:
Look for a literary piece that shows appreciation of people under circumstances in life and make character analysis of
your chosen literary piece.
