TRANSFORMATIONS

With all transformations, all preimages are red and all images are blue to make them distinguishable.

The following is an example of a translation:

I know this is a translation because the geometric shape simply moves its position in the southeastern
direction. The preimage and image have the same size and same shape as a translation is an isometric
transformation where size and shape are preserved. Since I knew size and shape were to be preserved, I
simply copied my first image and pasted it into a different location without revolving the image about a
point. If I were to slide the image the same distance on the same line as the blue arrow but in the opposite
direction, the two shapes would align perfectly.

The following is an example of a rotation:

I know this is a rotation because the image rotated about a fixed point where the fixed point was centered
at the center of the preimage and the size and shape of the preimage was preserved. If I were to rotate
the image about the same fixed point and orientate it back the same way as the preimage, the two shapes
would align perfectly. Additionally, the fixed point of rotation being in the middle of the preimage is
actually the standard case for all preimages in Microsoft Word.

The following is an example of a reflection:

I know this is a reflection because the image has been reflected about an axis of reflection. This axis of
reflection is vertical and touches the preimage on its rightmost point. Additionally, the image’s size and
shape match the preimage. If I took the image and reflected it back over the axis of reflection, the two
shapes would align perfectly. The axis of reflection being on one of the edges of the preimage is actually
the standard case for all preimages in Microsoft Word.

The following is an example of a dilation:

I know this is a dilation because the image is obviously much larger than its preimage. It could even have
been a smaller image since a dilation is a change in size but not shape. That means if I were to resize the
image and keep its dimensions the same relative to each other and match the dimensions of the
preimage, the two shapes would align perfectly. Dilations are done in Microsoft Word by dragging a
corner of a preimage perfectly diagonally. Dragging a corner in any other direction would change the
dimensions of the preimage relative to each other and thus would make the transformation not qualify
to be a dilation.
