B. What are the foundational concepts of politics? (essay type 5 to 10 paragraphs) (20 Pts.)

Politics is a set of activities associated with the governance of a country or an area. It involves making decisions
that apply to group of members. Concept of politics refers to a set of concepts essential to any serious reflection on
political life that represent fundamental political values and principles. There are many concepts to be considered in
politics and one of it is state.

Some see a state as an ancient institution, going back to Rome, Greece and before, and theorized by Plato,
Aristotle and other classical philosophers. Others insist on the unique features of the modern state, with its extensive rule
of law, citizenship rights, and broad economic and social responsibilities. A state is more than a government; that is clear.
Base on the Merriam-Webster dictionary, state a politically organized body of people usually occupying a definite
territory especially one that is sovereign.

Next is government. According to Miller (1962), government is the arena of politics, the prize of politics, and,
historically speaking, the residue of past politics. Encyclopedia defines government as a system of social control under
which the right to make laws, and the right to enforce them, is vested in a particular group in society.

We need government to set checks and balances within our society, that way processes don't become chaotic. A
society run by regular people with generally irrational thoughts could end tragically. Also, government serves as the law
and order of a society, settings regulations to protect all rights and liberties for each citizen. After all, the word
government is based off the verb of govern. If we did not have a government, or at least anybody who is charismatic
enough to persuade people to do play fair, society could be in total anarchy.

Third is authority. In politics, authority is the right to exercise power, which can be formalized by a state and
exercised by way of judges, appointed executives of government, or the ecclesiastical or priestly appointed representatives
of a God or other deities. The term "power" is often used to show authority that is perceived as legitimate by the social
structure.

Authority is necessary to a certain extent. We need authority to keep our society together and to make sure people
follow laws so that everyone stays safe. Without authority or society would do whatever they feel and there would be no
rules to stop people from making very poor choices. For example an authority figure can punish someone who breaks the
law by committing a crime such as theft. However sometimes authority figures abuse their power and punish people
unnecessarily which is a part that we don’t need.
