Part 6: Read It! 10 min.
Directions:Read the passage below and copy the statements into your notebook:
a. The main idea from this reading is … (write 2-3 sentences)

Speed
Did you ever play fast-pitch softball? If you did, then you
probably have some idea of how fast the pitcher throws
the ball. For a female athlete like the one in the opening
image, the ball may reach a speed of 120 km/h (about 75
mi/h). For a male athlete, the ball may travel even faster.
A fast-pitch pitcher uses a “windmill” motion to throw the
ball. This is a different technique than other softball pitches, and it explains why the ball
travels so fast.

Introducing Speed
How fast or slow something moves is its speed. Speed determines how far something
travels in a given amount of time. The unit for speed is meters per second (m/s). Speed
may be constant, but often it varies from moment to moment.
Average Speed
Even if speed varies during the course of a trip, it’s easy to calculate the average speed by
using this formula:

speed=distance/time

For example, assume you go on a car trip with your family. The total distance you travel is
120 miles, and it takes 3 hours to travel that far. The average speed for the trip is:

speed=120 miles
time = 3 hours so
speed = 120 miles/3 hours = 40 mi/h

Part 7: Write it! 10 min.
Directions:
1. Copy the questions in your notebook.

______________________________________________________________________

b. The unit for speed is...

______________________________________________________________________

c. What is the formula for speed?

d. For example, assume you go on a car trip with your family. The total distance you
travel is 120 miles, and it takes 3 hours to travel that far. What is the formula for
speed?

Part 8: Watch it! (Speed, Velocity, and Acceleration) 5 min.

Directions:
1. Watch the Speed, Velocity, and Acceleration | Physics of Motion Explained.
2. Write the questions below, and answer them in your notebook.

a) Speed and _________ are different.

b) Acceleration is much more than just _________ _________ .
c) Speed is the rate at which something changes its _________ . It’s represented
as _________ over _________ .
d) If you’re driving in your car at 72 miles per hour then that’s your _________ , or
your _________ speed. This is also known as your _________ speed.
e) Velocity is a lot like speed except for one important difference it’s a _________ .
Which means it has a _________ attached to it.
f) Acceleration is the _________ at which _________ changes.
g) Any time you change your _________ you are _________ that could be
speeding up or slowing down which is also known as negative acceleration.
h) Direction is also a component of velocity so when you change your _________
even if your _________ doesn’t change you are accelerating.
i) Speed is the _________ at which something _________ . Distance/ Time.
j) Velocity is speed with a _________ . So distance/time with a direction.
k) Acceleration is _________ / _________ ^2. Or the rate at which _________
changes. So whether you’re speeding up, slowing down, or changing directions
your changing your velocity and thus _________ .
