LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE OF GRADE 9 STUDENTS IN MATHEMATICS AT OLD

CABALAN INTEGRATED SCHOOL S.Y. 2019 – 2020

TOPIC

One of the greatest concerns of Philippines’ Department of Education (DepEd) is

the Mathematics education of the country. The relatively low mathematical achievement

of high school students was evident in the results of international, national and regional

mathematics tests. For example, in the recent National Achievement Test 2014-2015

result, the Division of Olongapo earned a Mean Percentage Score (mps) of 34.55 which

is way far than the goal of 75 mps by the department.

Thus, there is a need to improve the mathematical performance of high school

students. By so doing, we should start by first diagnosing the problem to further think of

an appropriate solution to this problem.

RESEARCH QUESTION

This study aims to know the performance level of Grade 9 students in Mathematics.

Specifically, this study intends to answer the question:

 What is the level of performance of the Grade 9 students in Mathematics

based on the item analysis?

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

Based from the item analysis, the mean score of the fifty-nine students is 14.90

which mean that most of the students have score near 15. It also shows that the mean

percentage score is 37.35 which mean that more than a third of the required

competencies for the quarter were met. Furthermore, it also shows that the most learned

competencies are getting the product and factoring of different polynomials; and the least

learned competency is solving word problems involving the product and factors of

polynomials.

CONCLUSION

Based on the item analysis, the Grade 8 students in Mathematics scored on the

average 14.90 which is 37.25 mean percentage score.

RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Remediation should be done to learners who did not meet the required competencies.

Least learned competencies should be retaught to these learners.

2. Item analysis should be done regularly after each examination to assess students’

comprehension level.

INTERVENTION
The researcher conducted remedial classes for a week to students who did meet

the required competencies. Different activities and teaching strategies were employed to

cater to the learners’ different learning styles ensuring maximum retention rate.

After the remedial class, an assessment was done and 73.33% of the learners met

the required competencies.
