The research entitled “Factors That Lead to Cutting Classes of XiJEN Students”

was constructed by the researchers for they wanted to discern and take deep
explorations concerning the behaviors of different individuals specifically the Senior
High School students of XiJEN College who manage cutting classes and how such
deeds affect their performance.
INTRODUCTION

According to the Oxford Dictionary, school is an institution at which instruction is

given in a particular discipline. Thus, it means the priority of school is serving as a
learning environment to help students grow academically. Alongside preparing the
students, professors and teachers discipline and correct the behavioral problems of
each individual for them to be properly molded.

According to (Carnevale and Rose, 2011) an increasing number of individuals

seek a high level of education to secure their future and improve economic possibilities.
Many therefore believe that education is the key to success. All of the countries
worldwide implement education as compulsory when children reach the right ages of
learning.

School, the second home is where the learner’s come out of their comfort zones,
explore life, and make their own decisions. During these formative years, it is inevitable
for the students to cut class (Tagudando, 2014). In fact, cutting classes are now often
most especially to those students studying in public schools (Ramos, 2013).

Another study from (DeKalb, 1999) truancy has been labeled one of the top ten
major problems in country’s schools negatively affecting the future of our youth. For all
professors- not requiring students to attend class harms performance (Taylor, 2012). In
effect, students and professors who take advantage of attendance as measured by
coming to class in addition to pre-exam reviews and taking optional exam preparation
quizzes will benefit regarding grades. Thus, students should easily be able to control
their attendance just as professors can easily control how they encourage attendance
(Gump, 2005). Failure to do so by both stakeholders is likely to result in less learning
and worse grades. The most common reason why student skip is that for them to rest or
sleep. This motivation was provided by 25% of those who skipped. The next popular
reasons provided were closely related answers such as the class was boring or useless
which combined account for 25% of responses. Finally, 14% indicated that they skipped
class in order to complete work for another class (Gil, 2012).

According to the survey of ERIC/CEM and Linn-Benton Education Service

District, boredom and loss of interest in school, irrelevant courses, suspensions, and
bad relationship with teachers are the major factors in their decision to skip school. On
the other hand, most of the school staff believed truancy to be related primarily to
student problems with family and peers. Skipping is determined to students
achievement, promotion, graduation, self-esteem and employment potential. Clearly
students who miss school fall behind their peers in the classroom. This in turn, leads to
low self-esteem and increases the likelihood that at-risk student will drop out of school
(DeKalb, 1999).
Questions

1. What possible reasons could suffice why XiJEN students tend to skip from
their class?

2. Does the school contribute to this reasons? Why?

3. What are the effects of skipping class to the academic performance of

student?

4. What do XiJEN students do after skipping their class?

5. Why do students still skip knowing the consequences of their action?

6. For students who are skipping:

What steps should be taken to help minimized this problem?
For well-behaved ones:
What motivates you to attend class?
Design and Methodology

Data Gathering Tool

This study uses questionnaire with open-ended questions as its main gathering
instrument wherein it comprises the demographic profile of the respondents as skippers
or well- behaved. We collected the data from the attendance sheets of different sections
starting from the month of June 4 to August 31, 2018. Truant students with skipped 10
times and above are selected purposively to complete the required number of
respondents. Students with perfect attendance are deliberately selected to balance the
numbers of skippers and well-behaved. The researchers engage in purposive sampling
to get a reliable data from students with experiences of skipping and students with
behaved attitudes.

In XiJEN College, class attendance is mandatory and is checked per hour by the
subject teachers. The attendance is used for student evaluation every after the quarterly
exam.

Location and Population of the Study

The study is conducted school-based in the XiJEN College of Mountain Province

Inc. located at Upper Caluttit, Bontoc, Mountain Province. The school’s population is
approximately 315 students. All the respondents came from the Senior High School
Department under the strands HUMMS, GAS, ABM, and TVL- CSS. There are total of
40 respondents, 20 skippers and 20 with perfect attendance. Statistically, 65% are men
and 35% are women.
