Mogadishu, 26 Sept, 2019 -The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has
honed its officers on the latest tools and techniques in the gathering and use of
Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) methods.
The training, which was supported by the United Kingdom (UK) Mission Support
Team to AMISOM, introduced 31 AMISOM and five Somali National Army officers to
the capabilities of unmanned aerial surveillance systems.
“The aim of this course was to enhance the proficiency of newly deployed AMISOM
staff to the Force Headquarters ISR cell and, secondly, to increase their
understanding of the applications of ISR to sector level operations,” said AMISOM’s
Chief Military Intelligence Officer, Col. David Obonyo.
Advisor to the UK Mission Support Team, Captain Conor Brady, said the training had
produced refined ISR practitioners who would help operationalize ISR cells in the
field and also train others in comprehensive approaches to security in Somalia.
“The past two weeks have been very productive. The trainees have learnt a lot and
demonstrated this during group training exercises, and we believe that we have the
competencies to operate within AMISOM and the SNA,” said Captain Brady.
Major John Kisilu from the Kenyan Air Force was full of grateful for the quality of
training they had received particularly on the use of tools like google maps, the
drafting of intelligence collection plans, record keeping and the dissemination of
information.
