Exercise 1

It is well-known that if a mother smokes during pregnancy, it can have long-term effects
on the physical health of the child, including increased risk for respiratory disease, ear
infections and asthma. New research shows that prenatal smoking also can lead to psychiatric
problems and increase the need yins for psychotropic medications in childhood and young
adulthood.
Researchers from Finland found that adolescants who had been exposed to prenatal
smoking were at increased risk for use of all psychiatric drugs especially those uses to treat
depression, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and addiction compared to non-
exposed youths. The study is being presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual
meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Recent studies show that maternal smoking during pregnancy may interfere with brain
development of the growing fetus “said Mikael Ekblad lead author of the study and a pediatric
researcher at Turku University Hospital in Finland. “By avoiding smoking during pregnancy,
all the later psychiatric problems caused by smoking exposure could be prevented. Ekblad and
his colleagues collected information from the Finnish Medical Birth Register on maternal
smoking, gestational age, birth weight and S-minute Apgar score for all children born in Finland
from 1987 through 1989. They also analyzed records on mothers’ psychiatric inpatient care
from 1969-1989 and children’s use of psychiatric drugs. Results showed taht 12.3 percent of
the young adults had used psychiatric drugs, and of these, 19.2 percent had been exposed to
prenatal smoking.
The rate of psychotropic medication use was highest in young adults whose mothers
smoked more than 10 cigarettes a day while pregnant (16.9 percent), followed by youths whose
mothers smoked fewer than 10 cigarettes a day (14.7 percent) and unexposed youths (11.7
percent). The risk for medication use was similar in males and females, and remained after
adjusting for risk factors at birth, such as Apgar scores and birth weight, and the mother’s
previous inpatient care for mental disorders.
Exposure to prenatal smoking increased the risk for use of all psychotropic drugs,
especially stimulants used to treat ADHD (unexposed. 0.2 percen, less than 10 cigarettes/day:
0.4 percent; and more than 10 cigarettes/day: 0.6 percent) and drugs for addiction. An increased
risk for use of drugs to treat depression was also seen (unexposed: 6 percent, less than 10
cigarettes/day: 8.6 percent; and more than 10 cigarettes/day: 10.3 percent).

Exercise 2
What makes a bee grow up to be a queen? Scientist have long studied this mistery. Now,
researchers at the Arizona State University have fit a new piece into the puzzle of the bee
development. Their work not only adds to understanding about bees. But also adds insights into
our own development and aging.
The study shows that a key protein in the insulin signaling pathway plays a strong role
in castle development among bees. A female bee can become either a worker or a queen. Queen
bees are larger and live longer that workers. Queen bees are also fertile while workers are
essentially sterile. A queen has only one role-to lay eggs – while workers tend the hive, care
for the queen and larvae, and forage for food.
“The incredible thing is that both of these types of female honeybees emerge from the
same genome,” says Florian Wolschin, an assistant research professor and the lead author of
the study. So how does that happen ?
Workers determine the fate of the larvae by what they feed them. The amount and
composition of food that the larvae receive determine whether they become workers or queens.
People have known this for many years. But exactly what happens inside the cells to create this
split isn’t completely clear.
The scientist found that the insulin signaling pathway plays a role in castle development.
Insulin is a hormone found in humans and many other animals, and insulin-like peptides have
been discovered in bees. Insulin moves glucose-sugar-from the bloodstream into the body’s cell
where it can be used. The researchers suppresed on of the key proteins in this pathway in
honeybees larvae. The protein, called the insulin receptor substrate (IRS), has been linked to
growth, development, and reproduction in mice. The researchers fed the altered larvae a queen’s
diet, but they developed into workers, not queen.
IRS in only one component of the process that decides a bee’s ultimate fate. Wolsching
says that several other molecules are known to play a role. Includng DNA methyltransferase,
juvenile hormone and a protein caller TOR, “those are all very important and fundamental
mechanisms,” says Wolschin.” One single part cannot alone be responsible. It has to be the
interplay between different mechanisms that finally results in the divergence of queens and
workers.”
The researchers are now looking at the interconnections between several of these
factors. “ we want to see if maybe there’s a hierarchy involved. Several of the components are
probably ‘upstream’ of other processes. So they serve as mass regulators and switcheds,’ says
Wolschin.
Honeybees are vitally important to our economy through pollination of crops as well as
production og honey, wax, and royal jelly. Understanding bee biology is crucial to maintaining
this industry in the face of problems like colony collapse disorder. Wolschin adds that bees also
provide an important model system that can help us understand our own biology. For example,
scientists have successfully reserved many signs of aging in worker bees.

Exercise 3
Children with special needs have experienced more frustration and academic failure
tahn most other children. Only about 57 percent of students with disabilities graduate from high
school, and only about 10 to 15 percent of those graduating attend college. Yet, some of them
become successful college students who graduate with a specialty in a chosen field. What are
some reasons students with disabilities succed in college ? ho can parents help their child be
among those who accomplish this challenging undertaking ?
Children who are raised with the belief that they have the skills to be successful at the
college of their choice, if they desire to pursue a college education, have a great advantage.
They prepare all of their lives for the experience of college. All through their school years they
make powerful decisions that lay the foundation for college success. Students who believe they
will be successful college students study more, they have higher grades, and they seek the
guidance of mentors who can guide them to develop strong skills. They “play full out” in school,
taking chalenging classes and honing their academic skills.
Students also need to be aware of specific action steps they should take to increase the
probability. They will be admitted to and graduated from the college of their choice. Ideally,
parents and children should begin to take spesific action steps by the time the student reaches
8th grade. For the student, this involves taking the most challenging classes available, while
maintaining strong grades and a great attitude toward academics.
Parents should encourage their child to learn from succesful adults who are rich sources
of information about the nature of their careers, the training they completed, and the strategies
they use to be successful. Family friends, teachers, coaches, and neighbors are valuable allies
to a student who is eager to learn about the kinds of opportunities available to them as adults.
Students should explore the world of work through paid jobs, internships, and
voluteering. They will learn about the working conditions of specific jobs, develop the
perseverance needed to commit to a challenging endeavor, and learn valuable interpersonal
skills such as cooperation and functioning within an environment that requires meeting high
expectations.
Students who have disabilities are entitled to receive support services that help them
make a transition from high school to post secondary activities. These services may include
coursework, learning counseling, community experience, results oriented employment, and a
functional living skills training. Only a small percentage of students with special learning needs
attend college, but parents have the opportunity to insure that their child is one of the succesful
ones. The most valuable step parents can take is to mentor their children to believe in their
intelligence and talents and know in their heart they can meet the challange of obtaining a
college education. This belief supports the effective action steps that parents and students take
throughout their school career to ensure a college diploma.

Exercise 4
Onboard navigation and mobile applications can tell drivers how to avoid traffic jams.
The trouble is, most of the drivers are already on the road, perhaps already in the jam. However,
IBM is about to deploy a system that will predict traffic flow up to an hour before it occurs,
giving travelers lots of time to avoid trouble.
During pilot tests in Singapore, forecasts made across 500 urban locations accurately
predicted traffic volume 85 to 93 percent of the time and vehicle speed 87 to 95 percent of the
time. Similar results were achieved in Finland and in New Jersey. The key to success is
predictive modeling-software that combines realtime data from road sensors and cameras, as
well as GPS transponders in taxis, with historical traffic information, roadwork conditions and
weather forecasts. Each week the model recalibrates based on statistics from the most recent
six weeks. It broadcasts advisories to electronic road signs and car navigation displays. The
system also predicts when a congested road will return to normal flow.
In each location, ongoing work will optimize the advisories. If, for example, Highway
1 is clogged and too many drivers who receive messages flock to Highway 2, which then
become overcrowded; engineers will customize the model so it can determine whether sending
the message to only 25 or 40 percent of drivers, say, would best balance the two roads. In
addition, because a high percentage of drivers now carry cell phones, IBM is working with
several mobile phone companies to be able to track the continually changing density of their
phones along roadways, which could provide finer-grained modeling, To protect privacy, the
identity of individual phones would not be disclosed.
IBM has signed contracts with two U.S transportation authorities to deploy a full
system, according to spokeperson Jenny Hunter. The locations will be announced soon.
Singapore may commit as well and is also testing a variation that will predict bus arrival time
for riders waiting at bus stops. Similar analytics are being applied to other applications. “The
beauty of prdictive modeling is that it translates across disciplines,”says Robert Morris, IBM’s
vice president of service research in Armonk, N.Y. for example the company’s laboratory in
Haifa, Israel, is testing a program called EuResist that predicts the success of different drug
cocktails for an HIV patient over time. Similar applications might determine which type of
breast or prostate cancer treatment could benefit a patient most. IBM is also working with the
Washington, D.C., Water and Sewer Authority to predict in real-time where problems are likely
to arise-such as which sewer lines might flood during storms. The goal is to adjust valves ahead
of time, systemwide, to minimize overflows and to deploy maintenance crews to spesific
locations early. In march, IBM opened a predictive analytics lab in Xi’an, China to help
business clients such as Xi’an City Commercial Bank anticipate costumer trends in investing
before they occur.

Exercise 5
Switching off lights, turning the television off at the mains and using cooler washing
cycles could have a much bigger impact on reducing carbon dioxide emissions from power
stations than previously thought, according to a new study published this month in the journal
Energy Policy. The study shows that the figure used by goverment advisors to estimate the
amount of carbon dioxide saved by reducing people’s electricity consumption is up to 60
percent too low. The power stations that supply electricity vary in their carbon dioxide
emissions rates, depending on the fuel they use: those that burn fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil)
have higher emissions than those driven by nuclear power and wind. In general, only the fossil
fuel power stations are able to respond instantly to change in electricity demand.
Dr. Adam Hawkes, the author of the new study from the Grantham istitute for the
Climate Change at Imperial College London, says the goverment should keep track of changing
carbon emissions rates from power stations to ensure that policy decisions for reducing
emissions are based on robust scientific evidence. The new study suggests that excluding
power stations with low carbon emissions rates, such as wind and nuclear power stations, and
focusing on those that deal with fluctuating demand would give a more accurate emissions
figure. Using the new estimating method, a figure of 0.43 kilograms of carbon dioxide per
kilowatt-hour of electricity consumed is found. That is 60 percent lower than the actual rates
observed between 2002 and 2009 (0.69 kilograms of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour, meaning
that policy studies are underestimating the impact of people reducing their electricity use.
Dr. Adam Hawkes, author of the paper, and a Visiting Fellow at the Grantham Institute
for Climate Change at Imperial College London, said: ”This means any reduction e make in our
electricity use – for example, if everyone switched off lights that they weren’t using, or turned
off electric heating earlier in the year – could have a bigger impact on the amount of carbon
dioxide emitted by power stations than previously thought. However, this also acts in reverse:
a small increase in the amount of electricity we use could mean a larger increase in emissions
than we previously thought, so we need to make sure we do everything we can to reduce our
electricity use.
Dr. Hawkes drew upon 60 million data points shwing the amounts of electricity
produced in each half-hour period by each power station in Great Britain from the start of 2002
to the end of 2009. He also calculated the emissions of each different type of generator by
examining government data showing their average annual fuel use. Finally, he took these two
sets of data to calculate the emissions rate that should be attributed to a small change in
electricity demand.
The results show that, for 2002-2009, the carbon dioxide emissions rate for estimating
the effect of a small change in electricity demand is 0.69 kilograms of carbon dioxide per
kilowatt-hour of electricity consumed. This is 30 percent higher than the average emissions rate
across all power stations, which is 0.51 kilograms of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour and 60
percent higher than the figure currently used by government advisors, which is 0.43 kilograms
of carbon dioxide per kilogram hour. The government needs a god understanding of the figures
it uses to support policy analysis, because this has a big impact on which technologies we
employ tp reduce our energy us.

Exercise 6
Fabio Capello is an example to all managers and he is well paid for it. His salary with
England stands at around 6 million and Inter Milan were quite prepared to raise that to 9 million
if the italian had been willing to go back into club football back home. So what makes Fabio
Capello so special, how can other managers learn from him ? and more specifically, what team-
building lessons can we learn from him ?
Fabio Capello believes that the secret to good management is to look into the eyes of a
team member to know exactly what he needs to hear. The eyes will give away the mood,
whether it’s fear, enthusiasm or whatever. Fabio then tailors his remarks accordingly.
Sometimes he will need to say a lot, sometimes almost nothing at all. His most memorable line
came when he almost nothing at all. His most memorable line came when he knew his AC
Milan team was already angry at having been written otf and disrespected in the week before
its Champion League final against Barcelona in 1994, He appealed to the pride of the players.
“If you have balls, if you are real men, you cannot lose,” he said. They went out and won 4-0.
As a team-building lesson, it showed that a certain economy of words can really work. It also
explained why Fabio doesn’t want to be a politician.”They speak a lot and do little,” Fabio once
said.”I am the opposite.”
Fabio’s football philosophy isn’t complicated and it works for all business. He insists
that his players treat one another and his staff with respect. That means they don’t call one
another silly nicknames, they don’t direspect one another by being late. They show confidence
is one another. Out on the field, the philosophy is just the same: Players must work hard for one
another, press together to win back positions, make sure that they take up correct defensive
positions, and build together once they have the ball. However, he doesn’t except people to be
machines. At key times during England’s stuttering start under Capello, he praised his players.
Then, when they lost against France almost without creating a chance, he said he was delighted-
because they had passed the ball well for half an hour. Through the power of positive thinking,
Capello almost forced his players to feel confident about what they were trying to achieve, step
by step.
Just as he is supportive in a crisis, Capello is ruthless if players are resting on their
laurels. So David Beckham was first dropped then reinstated, both with Real Madrid and
England. Theo Walcott was dropped because he thought he had”made it” after a hat-trick
against Croatia. Capello’s golden rule is: “Never think you hate made it-ever.” Sometimes he
doesn’t tell players who is on the team until the last moment. And even just days before the
World Cup, the three goalkeeping candidates didn’t know who his first choice was. All these
tactics are designed top revent smugness.

Although Capello is very much “the boss”, he isn’t so stupid as to imagine that he can
do everything on his own. He listens to advice from his trusted No.2, Franco Baldini, both on
football matters and regarding political or diplomatic issues connected with the job. Similarly
he will send Baldini, his goalkeeping coach, Franco Tancredi and his main field coach, Italo
Galbiati, to watch matches and trust their judgment on what they see. There are many, many
others in his backroom team. No man can do everything himslef.
That’s the Fabio way, and it has worked pretty well for him so far. See if you can adapt
Capello’s team-building lessons to your life. If you do, your own situation might just improve
dramatically over time.
