ASSIGNMENT 1 : Introduction to Engineering Mechanics
and Basic Structural Analysis
Sr CO
1 A machine weighing 3 kN is supported by two chains attached to some point on the CO1
machine. One of these chains goes to an eye bolt in the wall and is inclined 30° to (10)
horizontal and the other goes to the hook in ceiling and is inclined at 45° to the horizontal.
Find tensions in the two chains.
2 Two men support a weightless wooden beam AB with a weight of 1000 N hanging from CO1
the beam as shown. Find the load shared by the each man. (10)

3 Solve for the reactions at L, M, N and S on the two cylinders shown in Fig. assuming all CO1
surfaces to be smooth. (10)
4 Two beams supported as shown in Fig and separated by a roller at C, jointly carry the CO2
indicated loads, on CD, the load varies uniformly from an intensity of 1458N/m to an (10)
intensity of 2916 N/m while AB supports a concentrated load 2222 N.

5 Two Beams AB & CD are arranged as shown. Find the support reactions. (15) CO2
(10)
6 Two identical rollers each of weight 500 N, are kept in a right angle frame ABC having CO2
negligible weight as shown. Assuming smooth surfaces, find the reactions induced at the (10)
points of contact P, Q, R and S. Also find the reactions at B & C.

7 A bracket is subjected to the system of forces and couples as shown in the Fig. Find the CO2
resultant of the system and the point of intersection of its line of action with line AB, BC, (10)
and CD.
