PART- B (5X 13=65 Marks)
11. a.) It is required to make 1000Kg of mixed acid containing 60% H2SO4, 32% HNO3 and 8% H2O by blending. (i) 13
Spent acid containing 11.3% HNO3 , 44.4% H2SO4 and 44.3% H2O. (ii) aqueous 90% HNO3 and (iii) aqueous
98% H2SO4 . All percentages are by mass. Calculate the quantities of each of the three acids required for
blending. (7)

b.) A feed of 100kmoles/h containing 40 mole% A is to be distilled to yield a product containing 95 mole % A
and a residue containing 90 mole% B. Estimate the flow rate of distillate and residue. (6)

12. a.) A mixture containing 47.5%of acetic acid is being separated by extraction in a counter current multistage unit. 13
The operating temperature is 24oC and the solvent used is isopropyl ether. Using the solvent in the ratio of
1.3Kg/Kg of feed, the final extract composition on a solvent free basis is found to be 82% of acid. The raffinate is
found to contain 14% of acid on solvent free basis. Find the percentage of acid unextracted? (6)

b.) An evaporator is feed with 15,000Kg% of a solution containing 10% NaCl, 15% NaOH and rest is water. In
operation, water is evaporated and NaCl is precipitated as crystals. The thick liquor contains 45% NaOH, 2%
NaCl and rest is water. Calculate i) Kg/hr water evaporated ii)nKg/hr salt precipitated iii) Kg/hr thick liquor. (7)

13. a.) A crystallizer is charged with 7500 Kg of air aqueous solution at 104 oC, 29.6% by Wt. of which anhydrous 13
NaSO4. The solution is cooled. During cooling operation 5% of water originally present is lost as a result wet
crystals of NaSO4.10H2O crystallize are given out. The mother liquid ( NaSO4) was found to contain 18.3% by
Wt. of anhydrous aqueous solutiom. Calculate the yield of crystals & the quantity of mother liquor. (7)

b.) Feed to a crystallizer contains 6420 Kg of aqueous solution containing 29.6% anhydrous sodium sulphate by
weight at 104oC. the solution is cooled to 20oC to crystallize out the desired Glauber’s salt. The mother liquor is
found to contain 16.1% anhydrous sodium sulphate. Estimate the weight of mother liquor. (6)

14. a.) Soyabean seeds are extracted with hexane inn batch extractors. The seeds contain 18.6% oil, 69% solids and 13
12.4% moisture. At the end of the extraction process, the residual cake is separated from hexane. The analysis of
cake reveals 0.8% oil, 87.7% solids and 11.5% moisture. Find the % recovery of oil. (7)

b.) A gas containing 2% NH3, 25.4% N2 and the rest H2 is flowing in a pipe. To measure the flow rate an
ammonia rich gas containing 96% NH3, 3% H2 and 1% N2 is sent at a rate of 100 cc/min. The concentration of
NH3 in the down stream is 6%. Find the flow rate of gas at inlet. (6)
15. a.) A distillation column seperates 10,000Kg/hr of a 50% benzene and 50% toluene. The product recovered from 13
the top contains 95% benzene while the bottom product contains 96% toluene. The stream entering the condenser
from the top of the column is 8000 Kg/hr. a portion of the product is returned to the column as reflux and the
remaining is withdrawn as top product. Find the ratio of the amount refluxed to the product taken out. (7)

b.) Phenol and water when mixed form two separate liquid phase one rich in phenol and other rich in water. At a
temperature of 30oC, the composition of upper and lower layer are 70% and 9% by Wt of phenol. If 40Kg phenol
and 60Kg of water are mixed and layers allowed to separate at 30 oC. What will be the Wt. of 2 layers? (6)

PART- C (1X 15=15 Marks)

16. a.) 100Kg mixture consisting of 27.8% acetone (A) & 72.2% chloroform (B) by wt. is to be batch extracted with a
mixed solvent at 25oC. the mixed solvent of unknown composition is known to contain water S 1 & acetic acid S2.
The mixture of original mixture & the mixed solvent is shaken well, allowed to attain equilibrium & separated in (9)
to two layers. The composition of 2 layers are as follows.

Layers Composition Wt%

A B S1 S2
Upper layer 7.5 3.5 57.4 31.6
Lower layer 20.3 67.3 2.8 9.6

Find i) Quantities of 2 layers. ii) Wt ratio of mixed solvent to the original mixture iii) composition of mixed
solvent.

b.) An single effect evapouration is fixed with 1000Kg/hr of weak liquor containing 15% caustic soda by Wt and (6)
it is concentrated to get thick liquor 40% by Wt caustic soda. Calculate the Kg/hr water evapourated and Kg/hr of
thick liquor obtained.
