Dates to Remember: Other Important News
 Book orders are due this Wed., 10/2.  Parents, please help your child to remember to read daily, bring

Curriculum News
 Language Arts: This week we will complete the final lessons in Unit 1, Government for the
People. Most of the week will focus on review lessons using extended reads: Winning the Right to
Vote and One Nation from Many. On Friday students will be assessed on the skills presented
over the last three weeks. Language Arts homework (different format than Word Work) this week
is enclosed and due Thursday. In our Writer's Workshop we will continue with our personal
narratives as well as some descriptive writing as the students enjoy some special Halloween-
related writing assignments including a piece that allows students to compare and contrast two
Halloween characters.
 Math: Please review the Module #1 Math Test on Lessons # 7-13 with your child and return it
to school by Wednesday. We will continue working on lessons 14-17 as we focus on the
distributive property and problem solving using multiplication and division.
 Social Studies: We will continue to discuss influential leaders who worked for important causes
including Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Alice Paul, and Cesar Chavez.
 Art: We are continuing with our unit on Pablo Picasso and the corresponding activities.

How Can Parents Help Their Children Develop into Ravenous Readers?
Research indicates that reading has the most positively profound impact on a child’s future than most any
other academic activity. Children who read independently, just over an hour a day, consistently score in
the 99th percentile of standardized tests as they consume nearly 4.5 million words a year.

 Limit TV-viewing at home! Make rules about school nights.


 Absolutely take the TV and video games out of your child’s bedroom! Encourage your child to fall asleep to a good
a book instead of a glaring and blaring TV screen.
 Always make books available to your children. Take regular trips to the library. Have your child check out books of
high interest to him/her. Give books as gifts. Build a home library through book clubs and fairs.
 Limit video and computer games. Try to live without them for a week and devote the extra time to reading.
 READ WITH YOUR CHILDREN! Ask them about the books they are reading. Get excited! Encourage your child to
try new genres. Let them see you reading. Devote time to read-alouds.
 Encourage your child to “read the book first” and then view the movie version together. Have a compare-and-
contrast discussion about likenesses and differences between the book and movie.
