Question 1 (10 pts)

Given the following questions, choose one answer and explain briefly but clearly why it is the right answer from
a heat transfer and thermodynamic point of view. No credit will be given without justification even if the answer
is right.

I. (2 pts) A brick wall of a house in a cold day in Puno has its inner and outer temperatures at 14°C and
2°C, respectively. If an insulating material is added to the inner wall, what of the following statements
will NOT be true:
a) The inner temperature of the air inside the house will be greater than 14°C
b) The temperature at the interface of the two walls will be 14°C
c) The outer temperature of air on the street is lower than 2°C
d) The heat transfer rate across the composite wall (brick + insulating material) is lower than the
heat transfer rate across the brick wall alone.

II. (2 pts) Two hot steel rods are at the same temperature when drawn from a furnace. One (rod “A”) is
immersed in bucket with a large amount of water and the other (rod “A”) is exposed to stagnant
ambient air. If water and ambient air stay at 20°C during the cooling of the bars, which one of the
following statements is true.
a) Rod A cools faster and transfers more heat to water than Rod B to air
b) Rod B cools faster and transfers more heat to air than Rod A to water
c) Rod A and B cool at the same rate and transfer same amount of heat to their surrounding
medium
d) Rod A cools faster yet both rods transfer same amount of heat to their surrounding medium

III. (2 pts) A given opaque surface is exposed to the sun. When steady state is reached, what can be said
it is true:
a) Total irradiation equals emmisive power
b) Total irradiation minus radiosity minus convection heat losses equals zero
c) Absorbed irradiation minus radiosity equals convection heat losses

d) Absorbed irradiation plus transmitted radiation plus reflected radiation equals radiosity

IV. (2 pts) An engineer desires to design a 1-shell pass, 1-tube pass Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger
(STHE) to heat oil from 20°C to 120°C. If the temperature approach (the lowest of the temperature
differences between hot and cold streams measured at both extremes of the STHE) should be at
least 5°C, at what pressure it is reasonable that steam condense:
a) 1 atm abs
b) 1.5 bar abs
c) 40 psia
d) 200 kPa

V. (2 pts) For the same STHE design mentioned in the previous question, an area of 50.0 squared meter
has been calculated. Suppose, this STHE has been manufactured and is currently in operation with
steam fed as saturated vapor and condensed to saturated liquid. As the months pass by and provided
mass flowrates for steam and oil are the same as when the STHE was commissioned, what would be
the most likely effect of fouling whenever it occurs in both sides of the STHE?
a) Sooner or later, the area will reach 51.0 square meters and the condensate will start leaving the
STHE as subcooled liquid
b) The area will get lower than 50.0 square meters and the steam will not be able to condense
completely
c) The oil outlet temperature will decrease yet the condensate will still leave as saturated liquid
d) The oil outlet temperature will decrease and some steam will leave alongside the condensate

NOTES:

1 atm = 14.7 psi = 101.325 kPa = 1.01325 bar

Question 2 (7 pts)

Your company is considering buying a one-shell pass and one-tube pass STHE to heat engine oil from 20°C to
120°C with saturated steam. You have been offered a good discount if 4-meters-long 400 copper tubes type K
¾” nominal diameter (0.875 inches of outside diameter and 0.745 inches of inside diameter) but you have to
evaluate if it is proper for the task from a thermal point of view. The seller promises you that it has two smaller
exchangers but with 200 tubes and 100 tubes (same size and length) each and those could be purchased in case
the first exchanger is considered inadequate for your process.

If you need to process 50 kg/s of engine oil (process fluid), will the STHE offered be adequate? Consider that the
oil mean velocity should not be higher than 2 m/s. Take note that the pressure for the incoming stream of saturated
steam (service fluid) should be such that a temperature approach of at least 8°C is guaranteed. Pressure drop on
the shell side is 0.3 bar. Neglect viscous dissipation for your first estimate. NOTE: For any of the three choices the
shell side convection coefficient could be taken –as a first approximation- to be 2000 W/(m²K).

Would you recommend buying any of the offered STHEs? If not, recommend a different one.

All assumptions made to solve the problem, including correlations should be clear and precise.

Question 3 (3 pts)

A Mongolian grill is a 1-inch-thick 60-inches-diameter iron disk that can reach up to 700°F and is used to barbeque
meats. In order to keep it at the desired cooking temperature, hot combustion gases are burned underneath the
grill. Will a 10-kg propane tank be enough to keep the grill surface at a steady temperature of 300°C for an 8-
hour shift?

NOTE: the LHV of propane is 49.3 MJ/kg, which means that burning 1 kg of propane will supply at most 49.3 MJ
