Exercițiul următor se poate rezolva în două moduri:

Metoda I: 3∙5 + 3∙4 = 15 + 12 = 27
sau
Metoda a II-a: 3∙5 + 3∙4 = 3∙(5 + 4) = 3∙9 = 27

Alt exemplu:
Metoda I: 5∙6 + 5∙4 = 30 + 20 = 50
sau
Metoda a II-a: 5∙6 + 5∙4 = 5∙(6 + 4) = 5∙10 = 50

Metoda a doua se numește metoda factorului comun.

Alte exemple cu metoda factorului comun:

4∙7 + 4∙2 = 4∙(7 + 2) = 4∙9 = 36
6∙8 – 6∙2 = 6∙(8 – 2) = 6∙6 = 36
7∙4 + 3∙7 = 7∙(4 + 3) = 7∙7 = 49
8∙4 + 8∙3 – 8∙2 = 8(4 + 3– 2) = 8∙5 = 40
10∙4 + 10 = 10(4 + 1) = 10∙5 = 50
5∙6 – 5 = 5(6 – 1) = 5∙5 = 25

Metoda factorului comun cu litere

Exemple:
2∙x + 3∙x = x∙(2 + 3) = x∙5 = 5x
Acest exercițiu se mai poate scrie și așa:
2x + 3x = x(2 + 3) = x∙5 = 5x

Alte exemple:
3x + 4x = x(3 + 4) = x∙7 = 7x
7x + 3x = x(7 + 3) = x∙10 = 10x

3a + 4a – 2a = a(3 + 4 – 2) = 5a
5n + 3n – n = n(5 + 3 – 1) = 7n

Și acum direct(fără să mai trecem prin etapa factorului comun):

3x + 4x = 7x
6a + 3a = 9a
3x – 3x = 0x = 0
4b – 3b = 1b = b
