Britain's Prince Albert must ascend the throne as King George VI, but he has a
speech impediment. Knowing that the country needs her husband to be able to
communicate effectively, Elizabeth hires Lionel Logue, an Australian actor and speech
therapist, to help him overcome his stammer. An extraordinary friendship develops
between the two men, as Logue uses unconventional means to teach the monarch how
to speak with confidence.

My Reaction,

All of us has it’s own weaknesses in our life. And sometimes those weaknesses
makes us embarrassed so we tend to hide it from others. After watching this movie it
gives me hope because there is such a time that I want to give up because of that
weaknesses. I appreciate the character of Lionel because he treats the king as his own
family despite of the treatment of the king to him. He never give up and he always
support him .

I find the movie very interesting when Lionel test the Prince by reading a book,
in the first the prince kept refusing but in the end he agreed to Lionel. Lionel used his
one of strategy reading book loudly with headset on. And surprisingly the stammer of
the Prince was gone.This scene made me amazed.

I’m was very impressed in the confidence of his wife Elizabeth that she always
there for her husband despite of everything that her husband going through.

Sometimes we thought that we cannot get up in a problem that we face right

now.But this movie proves that God will used a person to push you to get up and
continue your life despite of everything .The trust of a person around had a big impact
to you.
 SPEECH CONTEXT
Speech context is the way that people use to communicate and transmit message
orally or verbally.It can be interpersonal or intrapersonal.While the intrapersonal refers
to communication between and among people and establishes personal relationship
between and among them.

Speech context in the movie entitled “The King’s Speech”

Interpersonal- refers to communication that centers in one person where the speaker
acts both as a sender and the receiver of the message.

Intrapersonal- the intrapersonal refers to communication between and among people

and establishes personal relationship between and among them. They are 4 types of
interpersonal context the dyad communication, small group, public and mass
communication.

Dyad communication- The term 'Dyadic communication', in general refers to an

interaction between two persons.

Example of dyad communication in the movie

 When Lionel the speech therapist introduce himself to the prince and start
asking Prince Albert privately about his condition because Prince Albert
doesn’t want anybody else to know about his illness.
 When the King of York the father of Prince Albert have a conversion with
Prince Albert about his brother David that wants to marry a woman that
already divorced with other men twice.
 When Lionel command Prince Albert to read the book that he was given
to test his speech and serves as his therapy.
 When Lionel having a conversation with Prince Albert about their own
family.
 When Prince Albert having a conversion with the lawyer about the case of
his brother David.

Small group-this refers to communication that involves at least three but not more than
ten people engaging in face-to-face interaction working to achieve a desired goal.

Example of small group in the movie

  This happen when Prince Albert tells a story about bird that cannot fly to
his two daughter and his two daughter kept on asking him what is
happen next.
 When Mr.Lionel is having a conversion to his family during he dinner.

Public- this type refers to communication that requires you to deliver or send the
message before or in front of a group.

Example of public in the movie

 Prince Albert reading his speech in public.

Mass Communication -This refers to communication that takes place through television,
radio, newspapers , magazines, books, billboards, internet and other type of media.

Example of Mass communication

 When Prince Albert’s brother declare to the public that he will give his
position as a king to his brother Prince Albert. He announce it using some
devices.
 At the radio station when the anchor announce to the public that the king
will having his speech.

SPEECH STYLE
INTIMATE STYLE

is a non-public Speech Style that uses private vocabulary and includes nonverbal
message. Meaning is shared even without "correct linguistic forms"

It happens when Prince Albert was been announce as a new king and he deliver
his speech to his jurisdiction. And after that he felt the pressure of being a new king so
his wife Elizabeth comfort him so that he will felt that he’s not alone.
 “I’m a naval officer ,That’s all I know.” “I’m not a king, I’m not a king ”,King Albert
said while crying

“I’m sorry “his apologize

“No, don’t be silly. Please” she said. “Oh my dear. My dear ,dear Man “

CASUAL STYLE

used among friends and acquaintances that do not require background

information. No social barriers required.

As we all know in this movie

The moment that Lionel let Prince Albert to call him by his only name “ Lionel” but the
prince didn’t want to call him that way. Lionel said that in here is better to be equal so
he call the Prince by his nickname “Bertie” only his family uses. that.

“It’s a little bit formal for here. I prefer names”Lionel said

“Prince Albert Frederick Athur George”Prince Albert said

“How about Bertie?”Lionel ask

“Only my family uses that” He answered

“Perfect” Lionel said

CONSULTATIVE STYLE

people do not share common experiences or meaning. requires two way

participation and interruptions can occur during the communication

This happen when Elizabeth wife of Prince Albert got confused in what the
doctor is doing to her husband so she ask the doctor.

“Excuse me ,Doctor.What is the purpose of this” she said

“It’s classic approach ,It cured Demosthenes” the doctor said

 “That was in Ancient Greece, has it worked since? “ she asked

This is an example of consultative style because Elizabeth as a wife she is concern

to her husband so she kept asking to a professional which is the doctor.

FORMAL STYLE

used only for imparting the information. Straightforward and direct and this style does
not allow interruptions.

In the 2nd scene in the movie it shows that Prince Albert the duke of York is
having a theraphy for him to speak straightly.The doctor prepare some strategies to
improve his speaking. And we can observe that the doctor is saying “Your Royal
Highness”that means he is giving a respect for the prince.

“Inhale deep into your lungs,Your Royal Highness” Physician said.

FROZEN STYLE

is a formal style whose quality is static, ritualistic and may even be archaic.

One of the frozen style in the movie is when the king delivered his final speech to his
people formally and people don’t need to give a feedback.

CONCLUSION
How often have we awkwardly looked away from other people's disabilities, unable to
face their agonizing struggle to accomplish what average folks do with ease?

In The King's Speech, an entire empire looks away from Albert and his excruciating
stutter. Yet he speaks to an audience that is just as fearful as he. When the certainty of a
dark and vicious war—and its uncertain outcome—overshadows Great Britain, the
nation longs for a leader who will competently guide and encourage citizens to victory.
And because they're not certain Albert is up to the task, we feel their agony just as
deeply as we feel his when, at times, he labors to utter even a single word.

People are ashamed for him. Embarrassed because of him. And yet they simultaneously
have their fingers crossed for him because he is their only hope.
