158mm lengths and comment on the result. Adapt a long fin model
for the arrangement.

2. A steam pipe of 160 mm inside diameter and 5 mm thick (k= 58 CO1


W/m°C) is covered with first layer of insulating material 30 mm CO2
thick (k = 0.17 W/m°C) and second layer of insulating material 50
mm thick (k = 0.093 W/m°C). The temperature of steam passing
through the pipe is 300°C and ambient air temperature surrounding
the pipe is 30°C. Taking inner and outer heat transfer coefficients
30 and 5.8 W/m2°C respectively, find the heat lost per meter length
of pipe.

3. A cast iron central heating pipe has an inner diameter of 100 CO1
mm and wall thickness of 5 mm. The pipe feeds a radiator CO2
with water at a temperature of 90°C and inner wall
temperature of the pipe may be assumed equal to the water
temperature. Calculate the outer surface temperature of the
pipe and heat transfer rate per metre length of pipe in a
room at 20°C.
Take k (pipe material) = 52 W/m°C and ho= 20 W/m2°C

calculate :
1 That loss per m2 of wall area;
2 Temperature of the outside wall surface of the furnace.
Take K for fire brick = 1.4 W/m°C; K for insulating brick
=0.2W/m°C

determine the temperature drops across the pipe shell and the

of 5 mm thickness are 2500 C and 250 C respectively. If the
thermal conductivities of steel and insulating material are 58W/moC
and 0.116 W/moC respectively, determine the rate of flow through
the boiler wall

2. What is the physical significance of the Fourier number? Will the CO1

3. A steel tube with 5 cm ID, 7.6 cm OD and k=15W/m° C is covered CO1


with an insulative covering of thickness 2 cm and k 0.2 W/m oC . A CO2
hot gas at 330o C with h = 400 W/m2°C flows inside the tube. The
outer surface of the insulation is exposed to cooler air at 30oC with
h = 60 W/m 2°C. Calculate the heat loss from the tube to the air for
10 m of the tube and the temperature drops resulting from the
thermal resistances of the hot gas flow, the steel tube, the insulation
layer and the outside air

3. A spherical shaped vessel of 1.2 m diameter is 100 mm thick. Find CO1


the rate of heat leakage, if the temperature difference between the CO2
inner and outer surfaces is 200° C. Thermal conductivity of
material is 0.3 kJ /mhoC
