Subject Details

Description

This course is provided the students with opportunities to choose and read short stories, novels, and
non-fictions, such as articles or chapters of textbooks at the intermediate level and above. It requires
the students to write a brief comment and a short summary for each of their reading materials; and to
carry out various classroom activities, such as discussion and presentation to share with one another
what they have read.

Goals

It aims at developing students’ good reading habits, experiencing different kinds of reading material,
and demonstrating good understanding of a number of different kinds of reading materials.

Objectives

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:


- list numerous reading materials they have read clearly.
- summarize the reading material they have read appropriately.
- distinguish different kinds of reading material appropriately.
- discuss the content of the reading material to the class briefly.
- comment to other students’ reading materials appropriately.

Content/Materials

Novel or short stories (classic/modern); articles from authorized sources, such as: Reader’s Digest,
Time, Newsweek; or chapter of textbooks; and journals on language or language teaching, such as:
English Teaching Forum, ELT Journal, etc. Online materials should be printed for class
discussion/report.
Criteria of reading materials:
1. Short story : min. 700 words (2 short stories)
2. Article : min. 5 pages (2 articles, 2 chapters of the books, and 2 journals)
3. Novel : min. 300 pages (1 novel)

Activities

The course consists of two components: (1) classroom and (2) outside reading or homework
components.
Classroom activities:
1. Consult the reading materials to the lecturer before starting reading.
2. Discuss the students’ reading progress in front of the class individually.
3. Submit students’ reading activities report.

Outside activities:
1. Read a(n) article/short story/novel of the students’ own choice that has been approved by the
teacher.
2. Write a report for the reading activity.

Evaluation

1. Student’s reading logs

 Attendance is expected except in cases of illness or family emergency. Your class participation will be
based on your attendance and participation in class discussion and group activities.
 Unexcused absences will have a negative effect on your grade. You should not plan to join in this
course if you have obligations that will interfere the class attendance.
