PREFACE
This book is written to cater specially for the needs of the students, preparing for CSIR-NET
and MH-SET/SLET examination. The content of the book is framed in accordance with newly
revised CSIR-NET and MH-SET/SLET pattern. We are glad to mention that the book is also
useful for the aspirants preparing for the various competitive examinations like GATE/ UPSC
and other civil service exams.
The book entitled “Physics for CSIR-NET/SET consists of 10 chapters namely, 1. Basic
Mathematical Methods, 2. Classical Dynamics, 3. Electromagnetics, 4. Quantum Physics and
Applications, 5. Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics, 6. Experimental Techniques, 7.
Electronics, 8. Atomic Molecular Physics, 9. Condensed Matter Physics, 10. Nuclear and
Particle Physics. Each chapter is designed as per the newly revised frame work of CSIR-NET/
SET examination pattern and followed with sample MCQ’s at the end of each chapter.

Authors lay no claim to original research while preparing the book. Liberal uses of the materials
available in the works of various eminent authors have been made.
This is an effort to provide a general understanding of various topics introduced for CSIR-
NET/ SET examination and various types of MCQ’s asked for the examination.

CSIR- NET EXAM SCHEME FOR SINGLE PAPER

CSIR- NET Exam for Science stream is conducted by CSIR. CSIR- NET Exam for Award of
JuniorResearchFellowshipandEligibilityforAssistantProfessorshallbeaSinglePaperTest having
Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). The MCQ test paper of subject physical science shall
carry a maximum of 200marks.
 The exam shall be for duration of threehours.
 The question paper shall be divided in threeparts

 Part'A'
This part shall carry 20 questions pertaining to General Science, Quantitative
Reasoning & Analysis and Research Aptitude. The candidates shall be required to
answerany15questions.Eachquestionshallbeoftwomarks.Thetotalmarksallocated to
this section shall be 30 out of200.

 Part'B'
This part shall contain 25 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) generally covering the
topics given in the Part ‘A’ (CORE) of syllabus. Each question shall be of 3.5 Marks.
Thetotalmarksallocatedtothissectionshallbe70outof200.Candidatesarerequired to
answer any 20questions.

 Part'C'
This part shall contain 30 questions from Part ‘B’ (Advanced) and Part ‘A’ that are
designedtotestacandidate'sknowledgeofscientificconceptsand/orapplicationofthe
scientific concepts. The questions shall be of analytical nature where a candidate is
expected to apply the scientific knowledge to arrive at the solution to the given
scientificproblem.Acandidateshallberequiredtoanswerany20.Eachquestionshall be of 5
Marks. The total marks allocated to this section shall be 100 out of200.
 There will be negative marking @25% for each wronganswer.

EXAMINATION SCHEME FOR UGC-SET

a) The SET will be conducted in Objective Mode. The test will consist of two papers.All
thetwopaperswillconsistofonlyobjectivetypequestionsandwillbeheldontheday of
Examination in two separate sessions as under.

b) Paper-I shall be of general nature, intended to assess the teaching/research aptitude of


the candidate. It is primarily designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension,
divergentthinkingandgeneralawarenessofthecandidate.PaperIshallconsistoffifty
(50) objective type compulsory questions of two marks each.
Paper I has 4 sets with 4 different Test Booklet Codes viz. A, B, C, D. Student has to
ensurethatthesameTestBookletCodeispre-printedandpre-shadedontheOMRsheet
(Answer Sheet) of PaperI.
Paper-II shall consist of hundred (100) objective type compulsory questions, based on
the subject selected by the candidate. Each question will carry two marks.
Paper II of each subject has 4 sets with 4 different Test Booklet Codes viz., A, B, C,
D. Student has to write and shade the same Test Booklet Code on the OMR sheet
(Answer sheet) correctly.
There will be no negative marking.

PROCEDURE & CRITERIA FOR DECLARATION OF RESULT FOR
UGC-SET
(Revised Qualifying criteria for UGC-NET to be implemented for SET vide letter No.
F.4-2/90(NET), 5th February 2018, is final and binding).
This will comprise following steps:
Step I: The Candidates are required to obtain minimum marks in aggregate of all two
papers i.e. Paper I &Paper II for eligibility for Assistant Professor as given below:

Step II: Amongst those candidates who have appeared in all two papers and cleared
step I, a merit list will be prepared subject-wise and category-wise using the aggregate
marks of all the two papers secured by such candidates.
Step III: According to UGC’s directive, 6% of the appearing candidates are to be
declared qualified for Eligibility for Assistant Professor only (Appearing means
appeared in all two papers of SET). The reservation policy prevalent in the State is to
be used to compute the category- wise qualifying slots available for eligibility for
Assistant Professor.
