Self, Self-Concept, and Identity

Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. “I” and “me” concept
ii. Is the self stable?
iii. Dual-processing models

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought the word me

and I are the same, and is just being used in varying ways. However, reading
the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize it is not the same, and
they have a big difference. These two could not be interchanged always,
but both of them could be used as a description to ones “self”. “Me” is for
mental content and “I” is for mental capacity of thinking. Also this two could
fall in different categories – it could be individualistic or collective
perspective, and this two perspective do have a major difference.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought I would learn
more about how to understand my “self” based on different theories.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize
Understanding the self requires complex skills and knowledge. It could not be
learned in a day or two and do requires a lot of testing and researches
before we could fully understand our “self”. And as our “self” we do know
what is the truth about our self but sometimes we just deny it because we do
not want to accept it.
iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought as a kid “social
products” under self and identity is just a theory, I do not believe on it up until
today. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now
think/realize it truly occurs in real life, what happens in the home, community,
country or place where the child is raised gives a big impact on what he/she
becomes. It also means that the people around the child plays also a major
role on the development of the “self” of the child. Other factors also include
religion, ethnicity and many more. This part is almost inevitable because the
child has no choice on this part of his life.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?
i. As I’ve said that social products are almost inevitable, because this trait
are inherited. Stereotyping emerges, can this still be changed? Does this
depend on the person?
ii. “Is the self stable” part, how does a person becomes stable? Are there
ground to be filled or needed to be fulfilled for us to say that the self is
stable?
iii. Based on the study, the collective perspective people are often better
than individualistic perspective people. Is it safe to say to always or it is
better to use the word “us” than “me”?
