Atkins Diet

Obesity, one of the culprits that has been contributing to most of the deadly diseases such as
cerebrovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes, has attracted majority people around the
world because of its large health care expenditures. From this, lots of approaches has been
applied in order to get a solution for this urgency such as Atkins diet plans. This essay will give
a brief explanation about Atkins diet.

Originally promoted by cardiologist Robert Atkins, Atkins diet is a diet plan that emphasizes
on low-carb rather than low-fat meal. The main key for this diet plan is to be selective in our
carbohydrate consumption by avoiding overconsumption of foods that contain highly refines
and processed carbohydrates. Thus, Atkins diet menu often concentrated on lean proteins,
healthy fat and high fiber foods. There are four phases that make up the Atkins diet plan:
induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance in which the
purpose is to maintain weight loss.

As a diet plan that has lasted for over four decades, Atkins diet is believed to give lots of
positive impact especially to our health. Controlling glucose and insulin level in our body is
one of the most prevalent examples in which it is important in order to reduce the risk of getting
diabetes. Moreover, Atkins diet also will help to raise good cholesterol (HDL) and lower the
level of triglycerides in the bloodstream that can help to prevent atherosclerosis and heart
disease. Furthermore, the first phase of Atkins diet actually boosts weight loss in a short time.

Despite its benefit, there are also lots of destructive criticism towards Atkins diet. One of the
most recent critics is related to high level of protein and fat foods such as meat, nuts and seeds
and so on, recommended in the Atkins diet. Most people afraid that this will eventually causing
backfire to body weight. Moreover, overconsuming of protein will also damage human’s
kidneys because it will reach the level of amino acid in body at which the kidney cannot tolerate.
Moreover, it is believed that the positive effect of Atkins diet can only preserve in short term.

In conclusion, many approaches can be used to cope with obesity. However, Atkins diet offers
a new way of diet in which its main purpose is not only to achieve weight loss but to reach
permanent way of healthy eating that will improve our health condition.
