AU Special Representative for Somalia visits AMISOM personnel admitted in various

hospitals in Nairobi

Nairobi, 29 September 2019—Soldiers serving under the African Union Mission in

Somalia (AMISOM) got a morale booster on Thursday when the AU Special Representative
for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Madeira, led high-level AMISOM officers in cheering
injured soldiers admitted at various medical facilities in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.

Ambassador Madeira expressed satisfaction at the quality of treatment the injured soldiers
were receiving, and thanked the medical staff for their excellent care to the troops.

Ambassador Madeira was accompanied by AMISOM Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Tigabu
Yilma; Lt. Gen. Osman Noor Soubagleh, who is Ambassador Madeira’s Special Advisor on
Military Affairs; the Acting AU Police Commissioner, Rex Dundun, and Lt. Col Dr. Cloudy
Mapepa.

Ambassador Madeira said that his visit was to show solidarity with the peacekeepers, thank
them for their sacrifices and reaffirm the commitment of the mission leadership to the
injured soldiers as they recuperate in hospital.
Speaking to the visiting delegation, a hospital administrator thanked Ambassador Madeira
and the mission’s leadership for their confidence and trust, and pledged to continue
providing high quality medical services to AMISOM personnel.

He said: “We appreciate the fact that we have continued to support each other in the
welfare of our men and women in uniform. We cannot over emphasize the importance of
what they do and we will continue to ensure that they are comfortable for as long as they
are in our care.”.

To raise the spirits of the AMISOM troops, Ambassador Madeira makes regular visits to
military personnel serving in the mission who have suffered various injuries in the fight
against terrorists, necessitating their evacuation to Nairobi for specialized treatment.
