AREA OF PARALLELOGRAM

Objective: Find the area of a parallelogram in square metres/centimetres

Review

The formula for the area and perimeter of rectangles and squares are shown
below.

Rectangle Square
A = lw w A = s2 s
P = 2(l + w) P = 4s
l

a. What do l and w represent? What does s represent?

7 cm

b. Find the area and perimeter of the rectangle. 4 cm

c. Find the area and perimeter of the square. 4 cm

Study and Learn

A. Look at the parallelogram below. If you draw a perpendicular segment

from one vertex to the opposite side what figures are formed?

right triangles
and trapezoid

1
B. If you cut along the perpendicular segment and rearrange the two figures
as shown, what new figure is formed?

rectangle

c. How many units long are the base length (b) and the height (h) of the
original parallelogram?

b = 12
h=6 h

How are b and h related to the length and width of the rectangle that was
formed?

b=l
h=w

The parallelogram and rectangle occupy the same amount of space. The
area is 72 square units.

d. The formula for the area of a parallelogram is the same as the formula for the
area of a rectangle.

Area of Parallelogram = b x h
12 x 6 = 72 sq. units

e. Let us find the area of the parallelogram using the formula.

A = bh
= 20 x 10 10 cm
= 200
20 cm
The area is 200 sq. cm.

2
Try These

Find the area.

1. 2.

3.

4.5 cm

9 cm

Wrap Up

Area of Parallelogram = bh

where b = base
h = height

3
On Your Own

Find the area of the parallelogram with the following dimensions.

1) b = 9 m 2) b = 11 cm 3) b = 8 m
h = 15 m h = 23 cm h = 16 m
A = ____ A = ____ A = ____

4) b = 7 m 5) b = 5 cm
h = 14 m h = 15 cm
A = ____ A = ____
