1. GENERAL
Read with the General Requirements section, and all other contract documents.
This Document is supplementary to Section A2-20 “Tile Roofing” of the NPQS,
which sets out Project Specific Data (PSD), in the same clause headings as in the
NPQS.
1.1 Scope
This section covers the requirements for the construction of common clay tile roof
systems including clay tiles, securing components, flashing, underlay and rainwater
goods. The following types of clay tile roof systems are covered:
a. Shingle (plain and interlocking tiles)
b. Cordova (Pan and Cover tiles)
c. V-Profile
1.3 Standards
Unless otherwise agreed by the SO, ensure all of the Works comply with the
relevant requirements of the Standards and Codes listed below or referenced in
the body of the Specification. Alternative Standards and Codes may be submitted
to the SO, provided it can be demonstrated that the alternative Standards and
Codes comply with the requirements of the standards specified. All Standards and
Codes quoted are the current version, unless specific year references are noted.

a) All spare materials shall be delivered and store in an agreed area by the SO.
b) The Dates listed are provisional, subject to final agreement with the SO.
1.4.5 Warranty
Refer to the PSD for warranty requirements.

2. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
2.1.1 Structural
The loads shall be supported and transferred to the main building structure at the
appropriate locations as indicated in the drawings.

2.1.3 Functional

2.1.4.3 Watertightness
The completed roof shall be in-penetrable to water and not give rise to any
observable dampness on visible surfaces under the normal environmental
conditions expected.
2.1.5 Maintenance
2.1.5.1 The roof system shall be maintainable and replaceable in parts or whole
from the outside.

The roofing system may be assembled on site with the individual components, or
supplied and installed as a composite system incorporating one or more
components.

3.6.1 Fasteners
The following fasteners shall comply with SS CP 94, non-corrosive, non-ferrous or
hot-dip galvanised metals with 300-500 g/m2 zinc coating.

5.1.2 Battens
Space and fasten according to the length and exposure of the specified clay tile.
Joints shall be square cut and butted centrally on supports.
At valley and hips, mitre cut and screw battens into valley or hip battens.
Battens fixed to masonry shall be straight and not less than 3 m in length.

5.2 Underlay
5.3.2 Eaves
a. Install anti-ponding board (or bevelled timber cant) at eave to prevent
waterproof underlay from dishing to a negative pitch.
b. Carry waterproof underlay over facia board, projecting not more than 20 mm
into the gutter area.
c. Lay and fix the first course of the roof tiles to provide a projection of 50 mm into
the gutter area.
d. Install proprietary profile matching eave closure to bird-proof overhanging
eaves.

5.3.3 Hip
a. Lay underlay over hip and overlap at less 150 mm.
b. Fix hip irons to hip rafters or hip battens.
c. Cut and fix tiles closely at junction, leaving a maximum gap of 25 mm between
cut tiles.
d. Fix starter tile neatly to align with corner of eave and fill end with mortar.
e. Starter tiles on hips shall project into the gutter area
f. Fix apex tiles to all junctions of hip and ridge.
5.3.4 Valley
a. Line valley with corrosion resistant metal flashing of not more than 3 metre
lengths.
b. Taper the valley flashing such that it is wider at its low point than its high
point, at a rate of 3 mm for every 300 mm.
c. Do not use through fasteners to fix valley flashing.
d. Attach the metal valley flashing with cleats only.
e. Lap waterproof underlay over valley by 25 mm.
f. Cut, lap, bed and point the valley tiles.
5.4 Skylights
Install skylight(s) in accordance with section A2-40, clause 4.0.
5.5.1 Flashing
Flash and cap all parts of the roof to prevent water penetration and dampness into
the inner parts of the building, including areas around vent pipes, skylights, ducts,
and other penetrations, ridges, verges, and along roof slopes that abuts walls.
5.5.2 Gutters
a. Install to required fall, space gutter support at 600 mm centres
a. Box gutters to be continuously supported
b. Fix stop ends to match gutters profile and colour
c. Lap all gutters in the direction of flow and seal all joints

5.6 Protection
Ensure that from completion of the roof until Practical Completion:
a. The roof is not used as a working platform unless fully protected to the
satisfaction of the SO.
b. Do not allow solvents, paint or other harmful chemicals to come into contact
with the roof surface.
c. Protect the finished roof areas from damage by subsequent building
operations.

6. VERIFICATION
6.1 Submissions
6.1.1 Submissions
Include in construction program, event for submission of the following information:
a. Name of the clay tile manufacturer and inclusion of copies of technical data
relating to system proposal.
b. Composition of the roof system and associated components.
c. Name of Sub-Contractor – (if sub-contracted).
d. Information of current or completed similar jobs during the previous 5 years and
details of Quality Control Procedures adopted.

Do not commence fabrication until shop drawings have been reviewed and
permission to proceed has been obtained from the SO.
6.1.7 Warranty
Submit the warranty to the SO upon completion of the works.
6.2.1 Samples
For each system type specified provide samples of each component to permit
approval of material quality, thickness, finishes and profile.
6.2.2 Mock-Ups
Within timeframe as directed, provide mock-up panel of sufficient size to permit
approval of the intended construction. Also include the following elements where
applicable:
a. Eaves
b. Ridge

c. Edge/gutter
d. Upstand
e. Vent pipes / other building services protrusions
If approved, this sample mock-up panel may form part of the works.
Refer to the PSD for additional requirements of mock-up panels if any.
