Abstract:

This lab task was performed to scour 100% cotton fabric with NaOH by exhaust
method. The recipe according to this method was prepared carefully and task was
performed. As scouring is an important process to be performed in Textile
Processing. It is helps better dyeing penetration or printing pigments. Less
unevenness is observed w.r.t dyeing as all impurities are removed. Metal ions are
removed too. The results were varied by weighing the cotton fabric before and
after process. The difference found indicated was the impurity present in cotton
fabric.

Objectives:

1. To understand the method of scouring a 100% cotton fabric.

Equipment, tools and materials:

 Measuring Cylinder
 Stirrer
 Small Iron Tub
 Electronic Weigh Balance

Procedure:

The liquor ratio of 50:1 was taken. 100% cotton fabric was weighed and performed
calculations to prepare the solution. The cotton fabric was weighed and solution
was then prepared according to recipe ingredients. Small iron tub containing
solution was placed in to water bath allowing it to reached at 100*C. The cotton
fabric was dipped into the solution and stirred thoroughly for 45 minutes. Later the
cotton fabric was washed.

Calculations and Observations:

Liquor Ratio = 50:1

Fabric weight = 3.21g

= 50 * 3.21

= 160.5g/ml

NaOH = 2%

= (2/100) * 160.5

= 0.0642 ml

Wetting agent = 2g/L

= (2/1000) * 160.5

= 0.321 ml

Sequesting Agent = (2/1000) * 160.5

= 0.321

Amount of water = 160.5 – (0.321+0.321+0.0642)

= 159.8 ml

Impurity % = (3.21 – 2.97) / 3.21 * 100

= 7.4%

Fabric after scouring

Safety measures:

 Use gloves while making solution.

 Deal carefully with electric parts of water bath.
 Avoid parallax error while measuring ingredients.
 Avoid human error while performing calculations.
 Make sure that temperature must not exceed 100*C.

Conclusion:

The results found was a small percentage of impurity in cotton fabric. For more
accuracy the experiment should be performed several times until impurity %
results found are same.
