Lesson Objectives: Review/Assessment:
Students will be able to congratulate one another Students will create sketches and congratulate other students in
verbally and in writing using the phrases to learn. the class using the phrases to learn.

Warm-up:
15 minutes Skills:  Reading  Writing  Speaking  Listening
Rock, Paper, Scissors cheering competition
Mr. Nate will explain the game Rock, Paper, Scissors. Students will compete against each other. The student that loses will then
cheer on the student that one. Eventually there will be one student remaining and everyone will cheer on that student. Mr. Nate
and the co-teachers will demonstrate. If time allows, there will be multiple rounds.

Present:

The co-teachers will introduce phrase and structures commonly used when congratulating someone. Co-teachers will
also explain that many of these phrases will often be follow with an exclamation point (!).

Congratulations (or congrats)
Well done
That’s Awesome/Amazing/Fantastic/wonderful

Check for understanding by having students read and respond to pre-prepared prompts in pairs. For example, yesterday I scored
the winning goal! Congratulations! The sentences will be written on the whiteboard. Any problems or misunderstandings will
be reviewed as a class.

The possessive form is typically used when someone says an accomplishment. A brief overview on possessive pronouns will be
done by Mr.Nate (my, your, his/her/its, our, their).

Practice:

Respond to Prompt
Students will be assigned one of four prompts. In pairs, they will respond to the prompts assigned with four sentences using
congratulations on a post it note. The post it notes will be hung on the wall beneath the prompts. Students will read the
responses from other groups after they are finished.

Produce:
25 minutes Skills:  Reading  Writing  Speaking  Listening
Act it out
In groups of six, students will act out a scene from a provided prompt. Students cannot say what action they are performing.
They can use words in English to help emphasize what is happening. For example, if the prompt is scoring the winning goal
someone can say “pass the ball” in English. Student will then act out their prompt in front of the class and other groups will
guess what the prompt is. After the sketch is complete, students will say the correct congratulations phrase discussed and
congratulate the group for their sketch. Mr. Nate and the Co-teachers will demonstrate this activity. If time allows, there will be
multiple rounds for each group.

Wrap Up: Students say something they are proud of and the rest of the students congratulate them
10 minutes –Students say something they are proud of or have recently accomplished and other students in the class will
congratulate him or her.
