ELECTROMAGNETIC THEORY AND APPLICATIONS

Unit – I 10 hrs

Fundamental mathematical concepts


Review of vector algebra, line, surface, volume integrals, vector fields, different coordinate systems
– orthogonal and curvilinear coordinates, polar, spherical and cylindrical coordinates. Vector
calculus – gradient, divergence, curl Gauss, divergence and Stoke’s theorem, Laplacian, Laplace’s
and Poisson’s equation.

Electrostatics
Review of Gauss’s theorem in electrostatics and its applications, electric field and potential due to an
electric dipole in free space, interaction of dipoles. Dielectrics, dielectric polarization, dielectric
constant and displacement vector, electric field in a material medium, Gauss’s law in dielectrics,
boundary conditions on field vectors , capacity and capacitors, energy density of electrostatic field.

Unit – II 11 hrs

Magnetostatics
Force on a current carrying conductor and Lorentz force, Ampere’s law in circuital form, force
between two current carrying parallel wires, magnetic scalar and vector potentials, equivalence of a
small current loop and a magnetic dipole, magnetic materials, magnetization, magnetic field in
multiple media, boundary conditions on B and H.

Unit – III 11 hrs

Electrodynamic fields.
Introduction, Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction (integral and differential form), motional
EMF and Magnetic energy stored in magnetic field. Equation of continuity , Maxwell’s equations
(differential and integral), displacement current., Maxwell’s equations in some particular cases,
relation between field theory and circuit theory, working of a transformer, eddy currents.
Unit – IV 13 hrs

Electromagnetic waves
Generation, electromagnetic wave equation, wave parameters – velocity, intrinsic impedance,
propagation constant, plane electro magnetic waves in free space, non-conducting medium. Brief
mention of waves in conducting medium. Skin effect, poynting theorem, poynting vector, plane
wave reflection and refraction, transmission lines, line equations, standing wave ratio and power.

Production and detection of EM waves


Production and detection of EM waves, Hertz experiment, transmission line wave guides, speed of
the guided waves, wave propagation between parallel conducting planes, propagation in a
rectangular wave guide, polarization of EM waves.
