Tutorial 1

Subject: Heat and Mass Transfer (KME 502) Sem. & Section: 5th C
Faculty Name: Nitin Kumar Chauhan

1. Hot gases at 1020°C flow past the upper surface of a gas turbine blade (the blade to be considered as a
flat plate 1.2 mm thick) and the lower surface is cooled by air bled off the compressor. The thermal
conductivity of blade material is 12 W/m°C and the heat transfer coefficients (convective) at the upper
and lower surfaces are 2750 W/m2°C and 1400 W/m2°C respectively. Assuming steady state conditions
have reached and the metallurgical considerations limit the blade temperature to 900°C, estimate the
temperature of coolant-air.

2. An exterior wall of a house consists of a 10.16 cm layer of common brick having thermal conductivity 0.7
W/m K. It is followed by a 3.8 cm layer of gypsum plaster with thermal conductivity of 0.48 W/m K.
What thickness of loosely packed rockwool insulation (k = 0.056 W/m.K) should be added to reduce the
heat loss through the wall by 80%.

3. Two slabs, each 120 mm thick, have thermal conductivities of 14.5 W/m°C and 210 W/m0C. These are
placed in contact, but due to roughness, only 30 percent of area is in contact and the gap in the
remaining area is 0.025 mm thick and is filled with air. If the temperature of the face of the hot surface
is at 220°C and the outside side surface of other slab is at 30°C, determine :
(i) Heat flow through the composite system.
(ii) The contact resistance and temperature drop in contact.
Assume that the conductivity of air is 0.032 W/m°C and that half of the contact (of the contact area) is
due to either metal.

4. A square plate heater ( 15 cm x 15 cm) is inserted between two slabs. Slab A is 2 cm thick (k = 50
W/m°C) and slab B is 1 cm thick (k = 0.2 W/m°C). The outside heat transfer coefficients on side A and
side B are 200 W/m2°C and 50 W/m2°C respectively. The temperature of surrounding air is 25°C. If rating
of heater is 1 kW, find :
(i) Maximum temperature in the system;
(ii) Outer surface temperature of two slabs.
Draw an equivalent electrical circuit.

5. A steam pipe of outer diameter 120 mm is covered with two layers of lagging, inside layer 45 mm thick
(k = 0.08W/m°C) and outside layer 30 mm thick (k = 0.12 W/m°C). The pipe conveys steam at a pressure
of 20 bar with 50°C superheat. The outside temperature of lagging is 25°C. If the steam pipe is 30m long,
determine :
(i) Heat lost per hour, and
(ii) Interface temperature of lagging.
The thermal resistance of steam pipe may be neglected

6. A wire of 6.5 mm diameter at a temperature of 60°C is to be insulated by a material having k = 0.1 74

W/m0C. Convection heat transfer coefficient (h0) = 8.722 W/m2 0C. The ambient temperature is 20°C. For
maximum heat loss, what is the minimum thickness of insulation and heat loss per metre length? Also
find percentage increase in the heat dissipation too.

7. A 10 mm cable is to be laid in atmosphere of 20 0C with outside heat transfer coefficient 8.5 W/m2 0C.
The surface temperature of cable is likely to be 65 0C due to heat generation within. Will the rubber
insulation, k = 0.155 W/m 0C, be effective? If yes, how much?

8. An insulated steam pipe of 160 mm inner diameter and 180 mm outer diameter is covered with
insulation of 40 mm thickness and carries steam at 200°C.
k (pipe) = 29 W/m°C; k (insulation) = 0.23 W/m°C; hi = 1 1 .6 W/m2°C and h0 = 23 .2 W/m2°C
If the temperature of the air surrounding the pipe is 25°C, calculate the rate of heat loss to the
surrounding from the pipe of 5 m length. Also find the interface temperatures also.
[Ans. 1823 W; 137.43°C, 137.2°C, 44.3°C]

9. A furnace wall consists of 12.5 cm wide refractory brick and 12.5 cm wide insulating fire brick separated
by an air gap. The outside wall is covered with 1.2 cm thick plaster. The inner surface wall is at 1100°C
and room temperature is 25 °C. Calculate the rate at which heat is lost per m2 area of wall surface.
hcf (heat transfer coefficient from outside wall surface) = 17 W/m2°C; Rair (resistance of air gap) = 0.16
°C/W; krefractory brick = 1.6 W/m °C; kinsulation brick = 0.3 W/m °C; kplaster = 0.14 W/m oC
Also calculate the temperature of outside wall surface.
[Ans. 1338.7 W/m2, 103.7°C]
10. A spherical shaped vessel of 1.2 m diameter is 100 mm thick. Find the rate of heat leakage, if the
temperature difference between the inner and outer surfaces is 200°C . Thermal conductivity of
material is 0.3 kJ/mh°C.
[Ans. 2262 kJ/h]
