UNIT 24 LAC: SOUND

EDITING
- SOUND EDITING IN PRACTISE
UNEDITED SOUND RECORDINGS
The question ‘ do you feel the need to be on
social media every day?’, ‘do you think social
media affects peoples mental health?’ and ‘
do you often find yourself on social media and
compare yourself to others?’ that was asked in
Tascam 0002 was not edited because the audio
level didn’t need adjusting in that part of the
recording. Everything that was asked and
answered in these specific parts of the
recording could be heard clearly. In Tascam
0003 which was Elizabeth recorded Tascam,
the question ‘do you find yourself on social
media and compare yourself to others?' was
also not edited.
EDITED SOUND RECORDINGS
Tascam 0002 was Aisha recorded answers. The question
‘what social media do you use’ that was part of Tascam
0002 was leveled in decibels from 0.0 to 0.03dB. In
Tascam 0003 the question ‘do you think social media
affects people's mental health?’ was edited because the
audio level was quite high and would've been a drastic
jump in the decibel level didn’t decrease. Tascam 0004
and 0005 was Sam and Lucy's and Kevin's recorded
answers and their Tascam was increase by 6dB. The
original Tascam was low and the background music that
was added to the documentary was more visible than the
actual recording therefore the audio level was increased to
clearly hear what each person was saying. There was also
some chatter in the background which
slightly interfered with Tascam 0005 and that is
another reason as to why the audio level had to be
increased.
UNEDITED RECORDINGS
There wasn’t any tascam recordings used for the studio interior recordings. The reason why there wasn’t any tascam
recordings used with the video recordings is because the tascam recording was not successful. There was static noises in
the background that was interfering with what was being said from both the interviewer and interviewee. Adjusting the
audio levels during the editing process would not have made the tascam recording any better. Adjsuting the audio level
higher would made the static noises more distinct and anyone watching and listening to the documentary wouldve felt
irritated by the noises. Adjsuting the audio level lower to try get rid of the static noises wouldve meant that you
wouldn’t be able to hear what was being said in the recording. It was the better option to use the audio that was already
provided with the video recording that was captured on the camera because everything could be heard clearly, there was
no interruptions present in the recording and it sounded so much better than the intial tascam recordings.
EXTERIOR RECORDINGS
When recording outside, we tried to do it in an area where
there wasn’t wind coming from each direction which would've
interfered with the TASCAM recording and distorted what
the interviewer and interviewee was trying to say. As a group,
we made 4 exterior recordings and they were successful
because you could hear clearly what was being said in each
video. There was slight interference in the recording like
conversations from people passing by while walking on the
link above us, but it wasn’t that distinctive and noticeable in
the video to cause interference.
INTERIOR RECORDINGS
The interior recordings were taken in the classrooms
and in the corridor. At first the initial recordings were
going to be taken in an empty classroom, but the
TASCAM recordings in the classrooms couldn’t be
recovered and we were only left with the video
recordings. We had to reshoot outside in the corridor
because the studio was booked out and there were
lessons going on at the time. The exterior recordings
were not as successful as the interior recordings
because the corridor has an echo which didn’t make the
recording as great as it could’ve.
