Book delves further into
Hough Green history
A new book has been published which explores the role of
Hough Green in a trading route from Chester to Ireland.
‘The Green by the Hollow Way’ comes from the derivation
of Hough Green and refers to the piece of common land
bordering an old track or road. Owing to the passage
of carts, people and animals, these ancient tracks were
frequently lower than the surrounding land and were
known as hollow ways.
This second volume of the history of Hough Green builds
on the unexpected success of Hough Green Local History
Group’s first volume “From Bricks to Villas”.
With much financial and other support from the Hough
Green Residents’ Association, the book, written by Ray
Carpenter, Pam Corkerton and Carol Farrell, was published
last month.
It describes key elements from a story covering the last
2,000 years or more, recording events both trivial and monumental. It provides a wealth of
images, many published here for the first time.
The book, priced at £12, is available from the Hough Green Local History Group by mailing local.
history@raycar.plus.com or by calling: Ray on 671684, Pam on 680277 or Carol on 674955.

Breaking up is hard to do
How to move on when a relationship ends
It’s painful when a relationship ends, whether the ending is mutual or one-sided. How do you deal
with the emotional rollercoaster that inevitably follows a break-up?
Ignore them – Ignore all attempts to Tweet, email, text or otherwise attract your attention.
Likewise resist the urge to Tweet, text or email them. Often, we fall back into a bad relationship
because it’s convenient, and we’re too set in a pattern to try something different. Break the cycle.
‘Disappear’ them – Hide away the stuffed toys, gifts and photos that remind you of them. In the
early stages of a break-up it’s too easy to cling on to the nice memories and persuade yourself that
you need them back in your life.
Don’t stalk them! – Don’t drive past their house or haunt places special to both of you. Even if
you can’t bring yourself to ‘unfriend’ them on Facebook, at least hide them from your news feed so
you won’t be tempted to check on them every time you log-on.
Get out – It might be tempting to lie in bed, eating Dairy Milk and listening to Heartbreak FM,
but what you really need is company. Ring your most sociable friends and arrange a fun night out.
Make a list – Write down all the reasons you split. Then read them back to yourself whenever you
start romanticising the past. Remember, they’re your ex for a reason...probably several!

Thanks to street cleaners
Just a note to acknowledge the good work Anne Marie Powell of the CWAC ASSIST team and
her gang did to clean Lower Hartington Street, in Handbridge, on the morning of 12th August
following representations made by neighbours.
Since 2000 I have pressed for parking on one side of this road on a rotational basis so that
this bit of road might be regularly cleaned rather than by these rare one-off efforts following
which the drains and gutters soon get blocked and filled with litter again with the local authority
workforce regularly unable to clean them to any effect.
Much of the day in day out parking here is by none residents and I doubt taking this action would
disadvantage established owner occupier residents; and indeed would be of benefit to them as
well as those of us who daily have to walk along what is this filthy street often blocked by cars
parked up on the pavements both sides of this road.
I have noted that local councillors seem to grab the chance of a photo opportunity, irrespective as
to whether or not they had anything to do with the clean-up action taken, when such as this rare
occasional clean up takes place but without prompting the necessary action to change this bad
practice at this location.
In two or three weeks as has happened in the past the drains and gutters will again be filling up
with rubbish.
