Background:

When British became the rulers of India in 1856, Muslims got Shattered in pieces. In
1857, Muslims took part in Independence War in their hope of reviving the Mughal Empire. As a
matter of fact, it could not be avoided that it was a mutiny not a war in which Muslims took part.
As a result, British held Muslims responsible for this mutiny and they adopt cruel policy against
Muslims. They confiscated Muslims properties and Withdrawn their jobs. Muslims were
suppressed by British and Hindus. Those were the dark days for Muslims. They were suffering
by the hands of British and Hindus. Sir Syed awakened the Muslims. Muslims were in deep
slumber at that time. He awakened them from their slumber. He guided Muslims. He struggled
for them. Sir Sayyed was from a noble family and was born on 17 Oct 1817 in Delhi. He got his
early education from his maternal grandfather Khawaja Farid ud Din. He was educated in holy
Quran, Arabic and Persian literature. His father death in 1833, he had to join government service.
By 1857, Sir Sayyed Ahmed khan had spent nearly twenty years in judicial service. He was
known for his justice. In 1857, sir Sayyed was posted at Bijnaur when the war of 1857 broke out.
It perturbed local European officers and their families. He saved many British Officers even at
the risk of his own life. He also saved British women and children from being killed. He refused
to accept the offered estate for his services which he rendered to the British.

Motivation Force behind the Movement:

The main motives behind the moment was followings

1) After failure of the war of independence of 1857 A.D it had become crystal clear that the
British could not be sent back with battles and wars. At the same time, it was necessary to
clarify the position of the Muslims to the British rules, who had serious misgivings about
the mind-set of the Muslims of the sub-continent. Aligarh movement took it upon itself to
do the job.
2) Cutoff from the modern science as they were the Muslim of the sub-continent remained
back ward and had to suffer hardships. Only those who had modern education, were
consider eligible for civil jobs.
3) The Hindus had slammed to dominate the south Asian politics and economy to become
the future master of the sub-continent. Therefore, it was necessary to equip the Muslims
with modern science to enable them to compete the so called future master of sub-
continent
4) The Muslim advocates of the modern education too were dissatisfied with the educational
system of the public schools, for it was repugnant to their culture values.
5) Sir Syed Ahmad Khan had criticized the dictatorial role of the education directorate in
particular. He was right in thinking that an un usually strong hold of the authorities on
public instructions.
6) The medium of the instructions in public and missionary schools was English moreover,
the locals were facing mint difficulties in grasping the European science, arts and
literature.
7) The curriculum of the public and missionary educational instructions contained such
material as was quite against the teachings of Islam. Christianity was preached
deliberately and openly.

Aims and objectives:

1) To enable the Muslims to be prepared to live with the bitter realities of the life rather than
continuing to boost about their glorious past.
2) To enable them to benefit from the modern facilities and comforts being available due to
modern science and technology.
3) To build confidence between the government and the Muslims.
4) To persuade the Muslims to acquire Modern knowledge and English language.
5) To hold back the Muslim from the politics.
6) To develop among the Muslims a scientific outlook with a view to exterminating
superstitious to which they had been a victim since long.
7) To raise the level of cousioness among the Muslims to enable them to safeguard and
preserve their national identity.
8) To revive among the Muslims the sprite of authoritative interpretation to enable them to
harmonize religious education with the modern issues of practical life.
