Featured Research and Evaluation Projects
STEM Evaluation Community Project
NSF Award: 1650215; Sponsor: Education Development Center; Principal Investigator: Leslie Goodyear, PhD
Project Role: Community Member July 2019 – Present
The primary goal of the STEM Evaluation Community project is to increase the capacity of evaluators to
produce high quality, conceptually sound, methodologically appropriate evaluations of NSF programs and
projects. The project will contribute to the exploration of innovative new approaches for determining the
impact of NSF programs and projects, promote the usefulness of NSF program and project evaluations, and
help to expand the theoretical foundations for evaluating STEM education, workforce, and outreach initiatives.
The STEM Evaluation Community will serve as a focal point for evaluation capacity building with and across
the NSF programs that fund STEM education, workforce and outreach activities, bringing people and ideas
together, facilitating dialogue, sharing resources, offering opportunities for dissemination and more. The
resulting connected system of evaluators will promote social innovation through a lively, dynamic evaluation
professional community in which NSF program and project evaluators will share their work, learn from each
other, and, ultimately, leverage and enhance the existing evaluation capacity building infrastructure that has been
developed for specific NSF programs and audiences, thus charting a course to build further evaluation capacity
across NSF.

Factors of Success that Drive STEM BP Evaluation Pipelines

NSF Award: 1849102
Sponsor: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Principal Investigator: Rodney Hopson, PhD
Project Role: GEDI Scholar October 2018 – July 2019
The purpose of this project is to conduct exploratory research to gauge the interdisciplinary and transformative
potential of using culturally responsive evaluation (CRE) methods to inform the general development of shared
accountability mechanisms for broadening participation in the STEM workforce. In addition, the research will
add to the evaluation knowledge/practice base, specifically on the efficacy of internship experiences in the
creation of more effective recruitment strategies, education/training, and career pathways for evaluation
professionals of color. This project builds on a need expressed by the American Evaluation Association’s
national competitive pre-doctoral Graduate Education Diversity Internship (GEDI) program to introduce and
advance the utilization of CRE in Federal STEM evaluation.

The Effect of Kinesiophobia on the Development of CAI in Athletes with Lateral Ankle Sprains
Advising Undergraduate Research Scholar Awarded $1,500 (https://oscar.gmu.edu/students/ursp/)
Sponsor: George Mason University; Principal Investigator: Jatin Ambegaonkar, PhD
Project Role: Grant Writer, Co-Investigator, Faculty Mentor June 2018 – June 2019
An estimated two million lateral ankle sprains (LAS) are reported each year. Of those, approximately 73% will
develop chronic ankle instability (CAI). Previous literature notes many factors increase CAI risk, including
recurrent ankle sprains, mechanical instability, and impaired proprioception. Greater fear-related beliefs
following initial injury may result in guarding and unnatural functional movement which may increase risk of
injury. Previous researchers have found kinesiophobia—a fear of movement—to be a factor in recurrent ACL
injury despite a structurally healthy knee following previous injury. However, it is unclear if kinesiophobia is
similarly associated with CAI. Thus, the purpose of our study was to compare kinesiophobia scores between
cases (individuals with CAI) and controls (individuals with previous LAS but no CAI).

Project Role: Coordinator and Co-Investigator January 2018 – July 2019
Sport-related concussions (SRCs) are a public health burden and management of concussed school-aged
children remains challenging. Since 2010, all states passed legislation regulating concussion management in
public schools. The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) provided guidelines to assist all 131 school

divisions with integrating the unfunded mandate in policy and practice; however, implementation has not been
evaluated. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate policy implementation in Virginia public high
schools to understand real and perceived barriers to effective implementation.
