Will SMEs beat GST blues?
In the first quarter of 2017-18, India’s GDP growth dropped to 5.7% - the
lowest in the last three years – mainly due to the sluggishness in the
manufacturing sector, which plummeted to 1.2%. This numbers show that
the country lags behind China, which reported a growth rate of 6.9% in the
June quarter.
With the volume of throughput from small & medium enterprises (SMEs)
going down in India, low GDP number should not be a surprise. This is just
a tip of the iceberg and many believe the situation is graver on the ground
as the data do not cover the performance of micro, small & medium
enterprises (MSMEs), which have been the worst affected due to double
whammy of demonetisation (DeMo) and GST.
Unlike DeMo, which was unexpected, the industry knew about GST in
advance. Despite this, transition to the new tax law is challenging, especially
for SMEs, due to the GST’s complex rate structure, rules and automated
filing system. While organised sector has coped up well, unorganised
segment is facing a tough time. Sectors such as textiles, leather and logistics
account for the most number of unorganised firms, who are expected to
take a longer duration to adapt to the GST T regime.
One of the key issues before SMEs in GST era is the need for increased
working capital. With their clients delayingg payments seeking clarity on
invoice-matching process, SMEs are facing g the challenge of stretched
working capital requirements.
Exporters are also feeling the pain as delays in processing tax refunds
under the new tax code has locked up their funds, thus hurting their
businesses. It is worth to note that about 40 percent of India’s exports come
from the SMEs sector.
The government is realising the need too take urgent steps to lessen the
woes of SMEs – which play an important role in keeping the economy rolling
and generating jobs. It is reportedly plann ning to unleash an economic
stimulus – targeted at SMEs and exports se ectors - to spur invest s me
st men nt and
create jobs for the swelling workforce. The e aim is to ease outt the heiriirr working
capital requirement. Government is also exploring the optti tion

easy loans available to SMEs by tweaking the MUDRA Yoj ojan

ith rise in water scarcity
in India, availability of
water for industries is
going down rapidly.
Increasing population is pushing up
demand for food, which is resulting
in higher production in agriculture, a
sector that uses almost 70-75% of
fresh water. “India consumes 13% of
water (both surface & ground water)
globally. On the other hand, inspite
of having world’s largest population,
China occupies the second place
(12%) as the country is taking steps to
conserve and recycle water,” says Dr
Suresh Kulkarni, Secretary,

As per UNICEF estimate, water
availability per capita in India will
decrease in the next 40 years. In

by 2025 and 1,140 CMPA by 2050.

Companies are finding themselves
under increased pressure to optimally
use water - a scarce, but,
quintessential resource for any
industry. Realising this, companies
are taking initiatives for water
conservation, wastewater recycle,
desalination, etc. While companies
can easily get the necessary
approvals, power and other utilities
for expanding their production
facility, getting licence to draw fresh/
raw water is increasingly becoming a
tougher task. This is forcing the
industry to find ways to reduce/reuse
and recycle water used in
the premises.
Another factor that is driving
companies to incorporate water
conservation strategy is the threat of
communities living around the
industries, which may get affected by
unhindered discharge of waste,
deterioration of ground water quality
and availability of water throughout
the year. Increased public pressure
and litigations are driving Indian
corporates to adapt sustainable and
technologically advanced water and
wastewater treatment processes,
including recycling and tertiary
treatment to meet the requirements
of water for their respective
industrial activities.

Multivent Engineers, belonging to the Iceberg group, is one of the most prominent
manufacturers of industrial fans, rotary valves, husk conveying, bucket elevators and
cyclones. Its product range covers dampers, desing and analysis,dust collection
systems, heavy fabrication, husk conveying system, mobile conveyors, pneumatic
conveying and rotary air locks, process fans and blowers. In a conversation with
Shashank Chaurey, on S P Dhiman, Chairman, Multivent Engineers, provided his take
on the current status of pollution control equipment industry.

thermal power plant, pneumatic
conveying system, rice mill, dal
mill, etc.
Besides, we provide
manufacturing of pneumatic
handling system where rice husk, ash
or any other material with specific
density can be transported from
generation point to discharge point

scope for pollution control
equipments in India?
Air pollution control in industries is
getting stricter and improved year
after year. As most of the state PCBs
and CPCB has laid out maximum
quantum (parts per million) of
permissible air pollutants (like fly ash,
SO2, flourine, smoke, NH3, cyanide,
NOX, SOX, etc) that can be released
into atmosphere at a particular
height from process industries, so
application of air pollution control
equipments in process industries will
become mandatory. The prospects of
air pollution equipment will keep
growing year on year.
What are the key user segments
of pollution control equipment
and which are the ones holding
promise in future?
Key users of pollution control
equipment are sugar plants, fertilizer

Will rising module prices put a
brake on India’s solar industry?
Rising Chinese module prices pose significant short-term challenge for India’s solar
industry, says Mercom India report.
A
fter falling by approximately
5% in the second quarter of
2017, for the first time in
years, the average selling
price (ASP) for Chinese modules is
increasing quarter-over-quarter in
India. Chinese module ASPs have
risen by almost 12% as of August
2017 compared to Q2 2017. By
comparison, module ASPs dropped
by 12% from Q2 2016 to Q3 2016.
Worst-case scenario
This is the worst-case scenario that
Mercom has been warning the
market about. For the past two years,
Mercom has stressed that “aggressive
bidding in an effort to capture market
share with the assumption that
component costs will continue to fall
no matter what is a risky strategy.”
Developers not just in India, but
across the world have been
modelling their auction bidding
strategies based on the assumed
perpetual decline of Chinese module
prices. It has worked for the majority

of the time, and developers have
become too ‘comfortable’ with this
strategy resulting in aggressive
bidding in India, which has reached
new heights with government
agencies cheering the low bids as an
incredible achievement.
Short-term fluctuations do not
usually make a huge difference but,
if module prices continue to rise or
even stay flat for a couple of
quarters, it will start hurting the
developers who cannot wait
indefinitely to procure the lowest
priced panel.
The price drop was steeper than
expected in Q2 2017, even though
high Chinese demand generally
firmed up module prices in June
before feed-in tariff deadline at the
end of the month.
Driving factors
Polysilicon and wafer prices have
increased significantly since June.
Polysilicon prices are up by 19
percent since June, though it has
started to flatten out over the last
couple of weeks. A major polysilicon
producer reduced its polysilicon and
wafer production significantly due to
technical and maintenance issues
resulting in some wafer shortages,
pushing wafer prices higher.
According to Mercom India’s
channel checks, module prices
quoted by Chinese companies
ranged from $0.32 to $0.37 (about
Rs 20.5 to 23.6)/W in Q3 2017. So
far, installations in China have this
year crossed 35 GW, which is already
more than entire 2016 installations
combined. For 2017, solar
installations in China could rise to
nearly 45 GW aided by the 5.5 GW
Top Runner Program, which carries a
deadline of September 30, 2017,
and the Poverty Alleviation Program,
which is a year-round, capital subsidy
driven program strongly supported
by both the local government and
central government. Module demand
for 2018 installations in China
generally begins in December 2017.

investment in module
manufacturing in India?
The answer is a little complicated.
First, we need to wait and see
what the antidumping decision
will look like and then, if a duty is
imposed, what it will be. If the
duty is aggressive and lasts for a
long time, then it will compel
Indian manufacturers to invest in
new manufacturing capacity.
However, Chinese companies will
still be able to manufacture and
export to India via other countries
like Vietnam, where they have a
manufacturing presence.
In addition, demand will suffer
if module prices rise by 20
percent or more as many
DISCOMs will shy away from
procuring solar at such prices
– ultimately reducing the need for
modules. In the end, the Indian
market must be large and stable
in order for foreign companies to
invest as building manufacturing
The wild card right now is the
question of how the Suniva anti-
dumping case underway in the US
against China and other countries
turns out. The first hearing in the case
occurred on September 15, 2017,
and it will be followed on September
22, 2017, by an International Trade
Commission (ITC) decision on
whether harm was caused to
domestic solar manufacturers.
If the ITC finds that domestic

the solar power industry?
If an anti-dumping duty is levied,
tenders and auctions will slow
down further as the modules that

percent of project cost become
expensive. Manufacturing capacity
will take care of itself but the
challenge will be a matter of who
is willing to pay more for solar
power? Currently, DISCOMs
aren’t even willing to pay more
than Rs 2.44/kWh, which is the
lowest bid in India. If solar bids
go up to more than Rs 3/kWh,
you will again see DISCOMs
looking toward thermal power.
Will aggressive bidding for
solar projects make these
projects unviable in the
long-run and lead to an
NPA-like situation?
Right now, there’s no bidding or
any major tendering activity going
on. The sector is stalled as it
manufacturers were harmed by
exports there will be a follow-up
hearing on October 3, 2017,
followed by ITC recommendations to
President Donald Trump on
November 13, 2017. The President
will then decide on January 12,
2018, whether he accepts the ITC
recommendations. If the President
agrees with the ITC recommendations
the effective date of remedy will be
January 27, 2018. If the President
awaits the result of DGAD’s
investigation. The earlier
aggressive bidding strategy was
based on the assumption that
module prices would continue to
decline no matter what. Hopefully,
if project economics are not viable
under current market conditions,
lending institutions will decline to
lend to such projects instead of
getting into a NPA-like situation.
Will rising module prices
drive DISCOMs and
developers away from
long-term agreements?
Without long-term power
purchase agreements, large-scale
projects will not get built nor will
they be able to sell power at
competitive rates. Realising this,
the MNRE recently updated its
guidelines for the tariff-based
competitive bidding process for
solar projects, which call for
long-term, 25-year power
purchase agreements.
Recently, the government set
new norms for DISCOMs
buying power from solar
power projects. Will this help
the industry?
It will, but they will not buy solar
power if it is more expensive.

extra high voltage and ultra high voltage.

From an Indian context, the
market is driven dominantly by the
industrial sector, and from our
basket, capacitors form a major part
of the revenue. Today, we have two
plants located in India manufacturing
an extensive range of film capacitors.
Where does the EPCOS Products
stand, in the solar/wind power
generation process?
Energy which is generated by wind or
solar equipment is in the form of a
DC voltage. To be able to use this
to either be: Stored in batteries by
way of charger/charge controllers
- to be used later; Converted to high
voltage AC and fed directly to the
grid - so that it can be transported to
far places where it is needed; or
Converted to line AC voltage - so
that it can be used closer to the point
of generation (e.g. roof mounted
PV systems).
In all these 3 cases, EPCOS
products find applications, in DC to
DC, or DC to AC power
management and conversion. We
support the industry with protection
devices, capacitors, magnetic
products and sensors which are used
at multiple stages of the inverter/
chargers/charge controllers.
How different is the
manufacturing of solar/wind
power based products from the
other sectors? What are the
challenges involved?
Due to the nature of installation and
high costs involved, the solar and
wind installations typically have long
lifetime requirements, in the order of
25-30 years. Secondly, the inverters
are mounted in remote areas and
sometimes under harsh
environmental conditions. Lastly, as
they supply continuous power to
many establishments, 100% upkeep
of the inverter equipment is an
absolute must, over the life of
the equipment.

lines, SMEs for India expansion”

Honeywell Automation India Limited

(HAIL) is a leader in providing integrated
automation and software solutions, including
process solutions and building solutions.
In conversation with Manish Pant, Ashish
Gaikwad, Managing Director, HAIL says
that the company is keenly eyeing new
processes in India’s smart cities programme
and railways for future expansion. It is also
looking at creating a new class of consumers
by offering cost-effective technologies to
SMEs (spread across the country’s mofussil
towns and cities).

In the past few years, you have
launched solutions that embed
software and analytics into
industrial products. So, when
you speak about the Industrial
Internet of Things (IIoT) in the
Indian context, which segments
of the economy are you
currently servicing here and
what areas are you keen to
expand into going forward?
The business that I run is Honeywell
Process Solutions, which caters to the
process industry. When I say process
industry, it is upstream, midstream
and downstream oil & gas, including
refineries, petrochemicals, pipelines,
LNG and LNG terminals, pulp and
paper, minerals and metals mining
and electric utilities. We would now
like to move towards small and
medium enterprises (SMEs) so that we
are able to bring the solutions in a
cost-effective manner and to those
industry players who were otherwise
unable to afford them in the past.
We continue to look at all kinds of
process industries such as
pharmaceuticals, metro railway and
water management systems coming
up in smart cities.
How do you propose to bring
down costs for SMEs?
There are multiple ways. First, we
have to be inclusive rather than
exclusive. That’s why we are
passionate about moving from tier-1
to tier-2 and tier-3 cities. We also
need to be practical about it. One
way that you can reduce the cost of
total offering to make it affordable
for SMEs is by designing fit-for-
purpose solutions that are made for
India. And, therefore, my team will
be continuously working on India-
specific strategies. Secondly, we
would also like to divide the cost
between players so that just one
industry doesn’t end up bearing the
cost of the total solution. That is
again where IoT can come in. Rather
than targeting just one SME, we have
a group of SMEs in the ecosystem
that are able to divide the cost and
take collective benefit of a solution.
Are you also looking at India’s
humongous railway network?
We have not played there in the past.
But I am sure that with the disruptions
happening boundaries between who
can play in certain industries and
who cannot will go away. I think it’s a
new way of looking at solutions. The
technology and products that we
have today for the rest of the industry,
some of them can very well fit into
railways as well. I would love to

years, we aim to make all our Bosch
plants in the country Industry 4.0

Which industries are at the

In the last two years, trade bodies,
associations, and government
agencies are putting in untiring
efforts to create awareness about the
need of smart technologies in the
manufacturing sector. As a result, a
wide spectrum of manufacturing
companies are aware of the need to
upgrade their facilities to be
competitive in the market.
How is RBEI, Bangalore, helping
Indian companies to gear up for
next industrial revolution (ie,
Industry 4.0)?
Our strategy is very simple. We
develop client-focused products,
which are basically software
solutions. When you talk about
Industry 4.0, we are talking about the
industrial Internet of Things (ie,
sensors, software and solutions).

multifaceted engineering group offering
products and solutions spanning
several segments. A.T.E.’s businesses
encompass manufacturing, industrial
sales, distribution, and service in
fields like textile engineering, cooling,
wastewater treatment, IoT for industry,
flow technology, print and packaging
equipment. In a conversation with IPF,
Anuj Bhagwati, Head of the A.T.E.
Group discusses about the company
plans to set up business in HVAC
sector and develop IEC technology.

A.T.E. has been a ‘one-of-its-
kind’ service provider in textiles
for over 75 years. What inspired
you to explore the HVAC sector?
Yes, textile engineering has been our
foundation, and we have carefully
nurtured this business with an
unwavering focus on technology,
customer service, and good
relationships with all stakeholders.
In the 90s, when I joined the
company, I was sure that
sustainability was going to become a
critical issue for India in the near
future. I was concerned that our
country stands to lose much from
climate change. To this end, A.T.E.
began to develop sustainable
products and solutions in cooling,
wastewater treatment, and energy
efficiency.
Cooling – either for people or
processes – is important in a tropical
country like India. People are more
productive when they work in a
comfortable environment, which in
India means cooling a lot of the time.
Similarly, certain processes require
specific RH and temperature
conditions to be maintained.
However, cooling with conventional
methods such as chillers and air
conditioners can be very energy
intensive. HMX’s products are
designed to be more energy efficient,
using only 40 - 60% of the energy
consumed by air conditioning
systems, while providing 100% fresh
air at the same time! Since our
products deliver cooling with less
energy, we contribute to climate
change mitigation as well.
A.T.E.-HMX now has the largest
installed base of Indirect
Evaporative Cooling (IEC)
worldwide. Can you please
explain how A.T.E.-HMX has
evolved to occupy such a
prominent position?
HMX has pioneered the application
IEC – a technology with tremendous
potential. At the core of every HMX
product is the DAMA (dry air moist
air) – a cross-flow plate type sensible
heat exchanger for IEC – which cools
the air without the addition of any
moisture to it. Our DAMA-based
products are designed to be an
upgrade from air washers, and an
energy-efficient alternative to air
conditioners. HMX’s DAMA has
received US and Australian patents
and is widely accepted by some of
the biggest names in sectors as
varied as automobile, engineering,
print and packaging, food and
beverages, FMCG, e-commerce,
pharmaceuticals, and more.
R&D deserves special mention. We
are constantly exploring new
approaches and improving our
products. One example of this is the
newly launched HMX IDECool, which
is designed to cater to the cooling
needs of small and medium
establishments and works on two
stage evaporative cooling technology.

Challenges Faced
Being a major supplier of AC units to
the predominant automotive
segments and all classes of vehicles
produced by global players in the
country, it is crucial for Subros to
honor deadlines of product delivery
with agreed benchmarks of quality.
Automotive manufacturers churn out
new models of their vehicles with
continual upgradation that requires
thermal products like AC units to be
more efficient and lighter. As the time
of vehicle launch is important for
these manufacturers, the pressure of
timelines vis-à-vis product
development is automatically
transferred to Subros.
The Subros team realised
the importance of
simulation to save time in
the product development
cycle and started using a CAE
software tool available in the
market. The team created load
and boundary conditions, beam
elements, and then set the product
model for simulation in the
software. The team found out that
the software took more time to
simulate and was also not user
friendly. To top it, the software was
susceptible to human error, which
occurred frequently further adding to
delays in product development and
delivery. In order to get rid of all such
issues, the team wanted a simulation
software product that was robust,
quick, reliable, and user friendly.
Investment in Altair CAE
Solutions
For Subros, the association with Altair
started with their search for a robust
CAE product that could save time
and minimise errors. What began as
a small association is now a full-
fledged relationship. Subros has
been using the Altair suite of products
for more than 10 years now.
Initially, the Subros team used
Altair’s pre-processor tool
HyperMesh coupled with other
industry solvers. Later, as the team
learned more about the capabilities
of the Altair suite, they moved
completely towards RADIOSS and
OptiStruct solver for structural
analysis. Currently, Subros uses Altair
HyperWorks 14.0 extensively, which
includes HyperMesh, HyperView,
HyperGraph, RADIOSS, OptiStruct,
MotionView, MotionSolve and
solidThinking Inspire. The team also
uses Altair AcuSolve, SimLab, and
HyperStudy intermittently, as required.
The Subros team has used Altair
solutions to fulfill various
requirements, some of which are:
