BIOLOGY 2
LABORATORY ACTIVITY 1
FLOWER DISSECTION
I. INTRODUCTION
The seed-bearing plants that produce flowers are angiosperms. The flower produces
the seeds, each of which contains a new plant embryo. Every flower consists of a set of
adaptations that help to ensure successful reproduction. The parts of the flower are
usually found in whorls, or rings. Petals are one of the sets of whorls. Sepals lie outside
the petals. The reproductive organs, the stamens and pistils, lie inside the petals. A
stamen is a male reproductive part while the pistil is a female reproductive part. This
activity will help you familiarize with the reproductive parts of a flower.
II. MATERIALS
III. PROCEDURES
1. Write the common name and the scientific name of your flower in the data
sheet.
2. Use a magnifying lens to examine each of the following parts. Sketch and label
the parts of the flower.
3. Locate the outermost layer of flower parts which are the sepals. Carefully
remove the sepals.
a. Record the number of sepals, attach one, and describe the function in your
data table.
4. Identify the petals and carefully remove each petal. Fill in the data table on your
answer notebook.
a. What advantage to the flower are colorful petals?
b. Why are the sepals and petals referred to as “accessory parts”?
5. Now locate the stamen and record the number of stamen, attach one on the
data sheet and describe the function.
a. What do anthers produce?
b. Name the flower part that elevates the anther.
c. Why is it important to elevate the anthers?
d. Describe two different ways that a pollen grain can get to the stigma of a
pistil.
e. Flowers usually contain more stamen than pistils. Why do you think this is?
6. Record the number of pistils, attach one, and describe the function.
a. Name the flower part that elevates the stigma.
b. Why is it important to elevate the stigma?
c. How does the structure of the stigma aid in pollination?
d. Which parts of the flower develops into the seeds?
e. When fertilized, what will the ovary grow into?
7. Attach a leaf from your plant. Is the specimen that you brought to school a
monocot or dicot? Give multiple reasons to explain how you know this.
