The Peace of Christ

The peace of God is described by Paul in Philippians 4:7 as being “beyond
understanding”. So what is this peace that Jesus says he will give to his disciples and how
can I get some of that peace? We all want peace in our souls and contentment and
happiness. Jesus was offering peace to his disciples in a time when they would encounter
and experience great suffering. He had already died and been raised from the dead and
was speaking to them before he left them and ascended into heaven. But most of the
disciples of Jesus would go on to be martyred in horribly painful and terrible ways for
sharing the Gospel. You might be thinking, “Jesus, I thought you promised them peace?”
Well, this peace that is being described in the scriptures isn’t the peace of the
world. In other words, it isn’t the kind of peace you get from having food on the table,
money in your bank account, or safety and security. The peace of God is a supernatural
peace imparted to us by Christ. The peace of God is a peace that survives even the worst
of suffering and pain. The peace of God sustains us through trials and tribulations. The
peace of God was with the disciples even when they were being martyred and hanging on
their own crosses. The peace of God was with Paul when he was being executed by
beheading. The peace of God was with the followers of Christ when they were being
persecuted and imprisoned for their faith.
Sometimes God delivers us from pain and suffering. However, I think more often
God imparts us with the supernatural capability to have peace, even when things are
really bad. The scriptures do not promise that God will take away our suffering in this
world – only in the next life. We must expect to suffer here in this sinful world but if we
are in Christ, he will strengthen us and give us peace. If you haven’t experienced that
kind of supernatural peace that sustains you when things are bad, then I encourage you to
turn to Christ. Pray to Christ that you surrender your life to him and his will. He can
give you the kind of peace that is beyond understanding. ~Pastor Eric

Time for Trunk or Treat Preparations!

Trunk or Treat night takes place on October 31st from 6-7:30 pm.
The Calvary-Asbury Women’s ministry would like to encourage everyone to
participate, in some way, for this event that brings our community right to
our doors. This is a chance to interact with our local families and share
the love of Christ.
Our community is now used to coming, with their trick-or-treaters, to our
parking lot for food and treats. We provide a safe and fun area for them.
We also give away small items with messages about Christ’s love to each
Indoor and outdoor participation would be great! If it’s too cold outside for
you, you can set up a spot inside to give away treats. While costumes and
decorations are fun for the kids, they are not mandatory. Smiles, kind
words and treats are all you really need. You may also want to consider
pairing up with someone else and having fun together while participating
in this event.
We also need a refreshment team to prepare our hog dogs, chili,
hot chocolates, etc. for this event.
If you are unable to be here that evening, donations of food or hot
chocolate are welcome.
There will be a sign-up sheet coming around during church soon. Thanks
so much for signing up to help, many hands make light work!
