Chapter 1

The problem and its scope

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the study

Having a big population of target market is the most essential asset for

any businesses. The market's patronage keep such businesses to prosper and

grow. These growth in economy reflects on the country's own and as such

achieving great success in business means contributing to the country's gdp.

These businesses must secure a stable market to keep growth going.

A street across the gate2 of University of cebu lapulapu and mandaue a

school – community owned by Atty. Augusto go. This is where we are going to

conduct our study. Since were currently are students and its the only reachable

topic students can conduct. The researchers have chosen this location to study

the businesses that have earned success by building services catered to the

population of UCLM's need. This area is very suitable due to its high

concentration of shops and the high demand for land plots to build businesses

on.

The study has two main variable which are to count how many businesses

are located around the gate2 and what are the effects of these businesses to the

students. The researchers need to define what are the main type of businesses

erected around gate2 and to know how they influence each other, competing for
growth and costumers. The researchers plan to complete this during the span of

the first semester academic year 2019 – 2020.

According to Jason Luthor (2019) “One of the first concerns of any

business owner should be toward establishing a business that appeals to the

local demographics. If the people in an area have no need for a specific kind of

business, then there will be little traffic. Conducting market research can help

identify parts of a city where a business will thrive. It’s also important to consider

the location costs. The surrounding area might be high traffic, but the cost of

that high traffic may come in the form of higher rent.”

The importance of location in business success cannot be understated.

The location of a business positions it not only to attract a customer base but

also to attract the right sort of talent to make the business a success. A

business’s location also helps it create a brand and image, since there are always

parts of a city that carry a reputation, whether its a busy street or a populated

school, opportunities of such shouldn’t be overlooked. Placing your business in a

part of town that reflects your brand and products can impact the success of

your establishing.

Our aim is to count the number of business and to identify which type of

businesses thrive the most. The researchers want to know on how they cater

their costumers services to secure competition. Nowadays most businesses have

gimmicks to attract attention of students, our members want to know if those

work or not.
The benefits the readers can get from this study is knowing the

foundation of how the economic works on the street across gate2, and find out

clever ways those businesses have tackled competition over countless other

shops. Young entrepreneurs can find this very useful if their trying to tap into the

costumer market here by getting information on what is the current situation on

the ecosystem.
Theoretical Background

A theory presented by Candice landau (2019) stated that “If you’ve been

thinking about starting a business for a while, chances are you’ve got an idea of

what your business location is going to look like. That’s great, but it’s not

enough. Choosing the right location is about so much more than finding the

place that looks closest to the one you’ve envisioned. It’s about being

somewhere your customers will see you, about being in a competitive location,

about staying within budget, and about meeting local and state regulations and

laws.”

The location theory states that location matters the most when your trying

to get a great flow of costumers. Multiple factors count in while choosing a

proper location. Elements like rent, visibility, size and terrain can fluctuate quite

easily depending on the traffic of costumers your dealing with. Laws also get

involved during the making of decision since improper placement can mean

hundred of peso wasted on fees. Taxes also come into play since larger land

plots means more annual payment that can greatly chip in business's income.

According to Systems Theory proposed by Ludwig von Bertalanffy

(1968)“If an organization is a machine, it has parts, each of which must perform

properly for a company to thrive. Together the parts operate as a system of

inputs, transforming processes and outputs. Inputs include information, material

and finances. Outputs include products, profits and behaviour. An owner uses

information to gauge how decisions will affect the system and its parts.”

This theory can both be applied on the business's inside mechanism and the how

businesses need each other to attract a great sum of costumers. The business's inside

mechanism can consist of staffs, manager, workers and even part timers. These factors

can very much affect the business performance based on how they work together, since

having the mentality is the most important thing in a business. While shops can be

competitive, they also need each other to attract a mass of costumers, since having a

variety of shops can attract more costumers meaning they can get more opportunities to

have new patrons.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers aims to statistically count the number of businesses and

determine what type of category do they belong to. The main problem of this is

that this number can fluctuate easily since most businesses opens and closes

depending if they are finding success or not. This can very much affect the

outcome so we plan to not include new smaller businesses if possible to avoid

this problem.

The researchers want answers to the questions that follows:

1. How much money does a student spend on these businesses on a single day?

2. Among the types of businesses, who had the most success?

2.1 Restaurants/ food stalls

2.2 Computer services

2.3 Tailoring/ accessories shop

2.4 School supplies

2.5 Barbershops

3. What are the problems of growing businesses facing in regards to:

3.1 rent
3.2 Influence and popularity

3.3 Labouring cost

Definition of terms

This study will be using pronounced words to better address specific information.

The following of which are:

Business location, Is a term used for a land or a space considered to have a

business built on. This includes factor like visibility and terrain to have a first

hand advantage from the get go.

Rent refers to the fixed amount of money you pay tenants regularly to use, in

this case, their land. This usually counts into pricing and putting interest into the

products their offering since rent can be pricey.

Traffic in this context means the movement of pedestrian on a street or a road.

This provides exposure to interested buyers making marketing quite unnecessary

which cuts down cost.

Gate2 this refers to the entrance of exit of the campus in uclm. High traffic of

people gathers around here since its the students main entrance. This means

that putting a business near this will guaranty a high traffic, which is why most

business are located around here.

Labouring cost is the money required to have people working for you in form

of a salary. This is a crucial factor since businesses here are always busy,

meaning a lot of workload which can greatly affect labouring cost.

Scope and delimitation

This study is focused on getting a sufficient amount of data of the

economy build around the population of uclm. This include counting the number

of shops and specifying them into categories.

The specified categories mainly involves restaurants/ footstalls,

computer services, tailoring/ accessories shop, school supplies and barbershops.

The other shops that cant be classified with these will be put into miscellaneous.

While we will be covering prominent businesses, we don’t plan to count in micro

transactions like parking fees and dispatchers.

This study will be conducted on the time span of the first semester of

academic year 2019-2020 on the University of cebu lapu-lapu and mandaue. The

researchers also want to figure out if there’s still types of businesses not yet

been build to see if theirs still a gap left yet in the market. This can be an

opportunity for those who want to join in the competition in hope for success.
Significance of the study

This study will be important to the following:

Students, this will give them the basic idea of what’s really going on the shops

they patronize, meaning they can better judge the business’s reasoning on

certain things, for example price. Since most prices are bloated to compensate

for tax and rent.

Business owners, they’ll get data from those of their competition giving them

an opportunity to further adapt their strategies. This study also offers them the

information of the current standing of the economy, this will give them the basic

idea of new opportunities not been used yet or things they can improve on.

Investors, similar to the owners, they’ll get an overview of the current

competition giving them better chances of surviving. They will no longer rely on

trial and error since the data is already discriminated on the study. This also

gives them an enormous advantage since they can they can think outside of the

mind-set of those who’re already in the competition.
