Part 1.
A.In the article Leadership in the NHS: does the Emperor have any clothes?, Kath
Checkland defines leaders as someone specified with certain behaviors such show benefits,
value, and charisma (Checkland, 2014). From the follower perspective there is a certain
hierarchy of leaders invoking rules, discipline and distributive qualities (Checkland, 2014).
In regards to the text they are comparable in delegating tasks and other production progress.
Part 2:
a group of people to achieve a common goal (Northouse, 2016). Northouse goes further to
explain the components of leadership. First is the process, many assume that to be a leader you
need certain characteristics or traits which Northouse has implied is false. Leadership is a
process, it can be a process for all individuals. It can be in one event or a series of actions, it does
not necessarily have to be a leader of a group or certain rank, and it can be available to all
persons (Northouse, 2016). Next is influence, leaders influence their followers and without
influencing others by your behaviors or actions leadership would not exists (Northouse, 2016).
Leadership, although it can be done on an individual scale is also is in small or large groups
(Northouse, 2016). Many groups are trying to achieve a common goal which can demonstrate
leadership, for example a large corporation which consists of board members supporting rights
for their multicultural employees. Lastly is common goals, leadership involves direction and
participation. This allows the group to achieve goals and provide a sense of community. There
can be many leaders in group sharing opinions to create and achieve the goals, and having the
B. There can perceive leadership in different ways and have define leadership and
management are different people or different functions. Kotter argues that leadership and
management are not similar as there are various dissimilar functions. He emphasized that
management functions are for order, stability, and consistency and leadership functional re
produce change and movement within the group (Northouse, 2016). On the other hand, theorist
Zaleznik argued that a manger and a leader are two separate types of individuals. Mangers tend
to reactive and work with others to help problem solve, and leaders are emotionally active and
involved changing the way people think (Northouse, 2016). He also argued that some function
intertwined and both involve each other, after reviewing these two theories I believe that a
person can be a leader and a manager. Since there are not certain characteristics for a person to
C. After reviewing and based off Burn’s theory of person power I do believe that
followers have more than referent and expert power. Burns stated that leader’s power is not an
entity to be used to rule over others for their own gain however it is to be used for leaders and
followers to use in their relations and achieve their goals together (Northouse, 2016). If this
theory is working for both parties then the followers have more power, for example a follower
may have informative power and can communicate this knowledge with their leader to achieve
their goals. This would empower their relationship and promote their goals.
Part 3: Activity
After reviewing my activity task list above most of my daily tasks are management and not
part of a group of eight employees whose job is at your own pace. However we get direction
from the hierarchy and follow as necessary. I have no say in processes or creating the
environment for my group. However I try to be a leader in my attitude as with the stressful
production numbers we have to complete tensions get high. I also try to be a leader in discussing
opinions and new processes to help the group and relieve stressors.
